In this video I show you how I make piping for use in my bag making projects. You can of course use the piping for any sewing project!
To calculate how wide to make my piping, I use the following formula:
Piping Diameter X 3.14 + Seam Allowance X 2 + 3mm (1/8”) Ease = Width to cut fabric
Example - 4mm Piping X 3.14 = 12.5mm + seam allowance (10mm X2) = 32.5mm + 3mm ease = 32.8mm - Round and cut as 3.3cm (1 ¼”) Fabric Strips.
An alternative method for cutting piping is found on my blog here: blog.chriswdes...
My bag patterns that have piping are:

Lovely to have you back doing what you love. I smiled every time when went for the reverse on the front of the Juki as I do the same thing between the Bernina and the Juki!

Haha YES! That reverse gets me every time LOL! Then once I get used to the Juki and go back to the Bernina, I have the fun all over again! LOL! Thanks for stopping by Elona 😊

Thank you for sharing your technique for making piping. I have seen this done before, but when it comes time to do it myself, I can never quite remember how to set up the fabric so I end up with a continuous strip rather than a bunch of separate strips that I still need to sew together. I have saved this video now so I can refer to it whenever I need it in the future.

Yes it’s not a new technique at all, but it is one of my favourites because it’s so easy to get a long length of piping very quickly from a smallish piece of fabric, only having to sew two seams 😊

Make sure you offset the lines when you join the two fabric pieces! I too have done the same thing in the past using this method to make bias binding😄

Excellent, excellent video. I LOVE how you get straight into it and love how you use interfacing. I did not know to use interfacing to stop the cord showing through. Fantastic. Of course, I'll be using your interfacing that irons on so easily. Thank you!!!
