First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. If you would prefer I put things that I can't keep into the TCH Etsy shop to help raise funds for me and the channel, please specify this in a note or letter in your parcel. Thank you so much!

Do you remember what your "awakening" was when it comes to vintage/historical/alternative fashion? As an example, for me it was seeing The Crow at around 9-10 years old and immediately knowing that "Holy shit, this is it." Like, who needs light coloured clothing when there's black? Love everything that you do and I hope that this year is gonna be great for you.

Hi life long New Englander here. Basements are 100% a thing. I’ve only seen a small handful of houses without them. They’re important for winterization, storage, and the occasional tornados. Edit: they’re used in CO for the same reason they are where I live. You need a deep foundation to go farther down than the frost depth to make sure it’s stable and less prone to warping/ cracking. If you have to go 4 ft down already might as well have a basement.
@emisformaker
@emisformaker 4 ай бұрын
Came to say the same thing. If you've already got to dig a 48" trench around the perimeter of the house to pour a footing on which to put the foundation, you might as well dig out a whole basement. That's how it was explained to me anyway.

Moving from southern California to Colorado as a kid (I was 13) basements were super novel to me 😂 I was taught then that they are mostly for tornado issues, but the frost situation makes sense!

Hearing you say the words "I don't think I'm skilled enough yet" truly blew my mind. I've watched so, so many of your videos with that exakt mindset, thinking maybe one day I could make a skirt like that, or that blouse, or those trousers. But that takes practice! And while its scary, and a lot of work, hearing that Im not alone in that sentiment makes it a little less terrifying to start. So before I go cut into some fabric I've been scared of for literally years, I wanted to say thank you- for your remarkable videos, and for making your audience feel a little more brave.

I grew up in the Northeast, some newer builds have actual basements, but considering the age of the houses that you like, they would probably have Cellars - and yeah, there's a big difference between those. Cellars will be shorter than a proper floor of a house, have exposed joists, and almost by default smell musty. they also tend to be designed to stay 60 degrees year round for canned good and root veggie storage.

I'm very late! I accidently ended up in Denver over the weekend. I didn't go too far from the airport. The mountains are so beautiful! While I no longer have the legs to carry off a side slit skirt, my granddaughters do. Perhaps I can make some skirts for them. They are dancers and wear a lot of costumes. I like the word "sensual" as opposed to "sexy." Sexy is in your face, while sensual is a combination of so many subtle things that add up to attraction that lasts. I love those patterned tights, by the way. Very attractive!

Fabulous as ever! And yes, the Northeast uses basements. We have tornados, flooding, and other lovely things. Plus, that's where most people have their laundry machines. Here in Pittsburgh, there's a "tradition" of having a "Pittsburgh toilet" in the basement. lol.

I live in the part of Canada just above New England, and basements are definitely a thing here, but in my experience the ones in Victorian houses tend to be very unfinished with dirt floors. The place I live in now has one with ceiling beams so low I can't fully stand up in it, and the dirt floor is super uneven from years when the river floods. The uneven stone walls would make it such a good spooky photo backdrop if only the ceiling was high enough! But alas, nothing down there but the water heater and some old boards & window panes, and it's not really a usable space. (also the skirt looks nice, especially with the patterned tights!)

Yes, basements are standard in the mid Atlantic to northeast. Old homes, say 1920-30?, might have stone walls with paver (bluestone) over soil floors. The old homes will not have a sump pump to remove water from underneath the house. 1970’s( maybe earlier) and newer with have cement block or poured cement walls/floors with a pump to move water away from the home. This might be something to research. Pumps can have backup batteries in case of power outages; I recommend that as I’ve bailed with a bucket my pump’s well (hole in the floor) during thunderstorms when the power has gone out. Skirt looks great. I’m with you for feeling scandalous with a high slit skirt. Mine was a “didn’t notice when purchased “. If those are patterned tights they are wonderful. I had black ink like floral patterned nylons that I loved that I haven’t been able to replace. So much fun

I buy the Japanese sewing needles for both my embroidery and bead work as well for normal sewing. Best investment I have made, I have a needle sharpener and cleaner in the shape of a very large strawberry. I find over time hand sewing needles has this sticky film that coats them, so I use the strawberry to sharpen and clean my needles at the same time. I have also used them on my pins over the years even though they are stainless steel pins once in a while they get this lumpy feel to them so I stab them into the strawberry a few times and they come out nice shiny and very sharp again. I am in the process of making my own pincushion using crushed walnut shells it’s the best stuffing as it helps to keep the pins clean and have never been known to make pins go rusty. Very nice and um yep a little to umm much for me considering I love my ankle length skirts😹😹😹mind you I think my hubby would defiantly love the skirt on me in private. It’s not that I’m a prude lol it’s just some outfits I feel are meant for that someone special in one’s life and not for every Tom, dick or Harriet down the street, I think it’s why I have always dressed the way that I do since I was 9 years old and was mistaken for a 16 year old.😳😳 You looked great in the outfit, and once you make the jacket to go with it, it will look even better.

Definitely! Like the war era bomber jackets that had proper collars, cuffs and waistbands. Basically a blouse with a waistband in a more structured fabric. I think there was one nicknamed after a general? Eisenhower? Or was it ours?....Montgomery?! Its such nice fabric though so she may want to reserve it for a more formal tailoring project.

This version of your pencil skirt looked very professional IMO. Maybe it was due to your wool fabric choice. In any case, it is lovely. With your skills I have no doubt you could create a beautifully tailored jacket, however I understand doing so while providing footage for your viewers would be extremely difficult. Never-the-less, I'm looking forward to seeing it... maybe next year. Thank you for your hard work and dedication to making these videos. They're the best when it comes to drafting realtime. Your timing is impeccable! I recently bought 2 types of wool to make skirts out of, and I like pencil skirts and have made one lined back-slit pencil skirt (first ever!), but the wools are so similar that it seems a waste to just make a duplicate. I use the term "rayon" the same way. It's actually now the family name for a number of different types: polynosic, viscose (the original, once called "art silk"), cuprammonium (aka cupro), lyocell, etc. Bemberg is a brand name of cuprammonium rayon but if there are any other manufacturers of this type I've never seen it anywhere. All types make very nice garments, but I have to admit that laying out, pinning, and cutting Bemberg is less than delightful. I don't find the actual sewing of it to be too bad.

Thanks for sharing this sewing journey! I love how it turned out on you and the fit is good. Like you, I tend to wear stockings or tights with high slits. It's a much classier look. KUDOS for lining the skirt. You're one of the few I know who lines as much as possible. Rayon is like MSG in that there are multiple names for it. I just call it all rayon because that is precisely what it is. I prefer a stretch bemburg to line things these days. As a stretch wool that is 95% wool is now widely available, the stretch lining also stretches with the wool. I would have done the slit lower by two inches but that is just me. I have a rectangular figure and a slightly lowered slit gives the illusion of curves. Really looking forward to seeing the jacket that you choose to pair with the skirt.

you are GORGEOUS!!! i love watching your vids and i have learned sooo much!! i really love your beetle buddies. this skirt is beautiful. really love the tights with it and love that your coming out of your comfort zone a bit. i would love to see what happens when you sit down? on my body my waist gains around 5 inches. how do you account for that? also unrealted. i'm blond and have had self issues with my arm hair. went through a phase where i shaved it. it's not worth the effort! yours is beautiful!!!

Thank you! I feel like, perhaps because I am a very squishy person (in that a corset can move around my middle easily), that standing or sitting or whatever way I move, the clothes hold their shape and my body just has to deal with it 😂

I have questions! First off, hello, and thank you for your videos. You've inspired me to attempt to make my own blocks and make my own patterns for myself and my boyfriend. My question is about making blocks. Could I make a muslin of a t-shirt, and use that to get the darts and shape of my block pattern on myself? Since, as we all know, pinning things to an actual body is...not the best way to do such things. Also, T-shirts are stretchy. I considered doing that and sacrificing a tshirt, but I realized that might not work fully as it does stretch. Thank you for your videos. I've just started learning to sew and they have taught me SO much.

I've found, that an easy way to get a decent basic pattern, is to buy a slightly too large blouse second hand, cut off the sleeves and then fit the remaining body part. You already got a button up closure, so putting it on and taking it off repeatedly is no problem. All you need to do is fiddle with the darts and side and shoulder seams, until you have a nice, tight fit. Then you take it apart and transfer it to pattern paper. This might not work for every body type, of course. But if it does, it can save you a lot of time and effort, making mockups. Using stretchy fabric for a block pattern mock-up is not a good idea, I think.

I have a playlist about some options for making blocks that can be found here kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZaslamLZcxnqs0 But in general I wouldn't recommend trying to make a pattern for wovens using something made from a knit (stretchy) fabric. For knits you can practically just trace things you like and cut them out in something new as long as the amount of stretch is the same, but wovens don't have the same amount of flexibility. I would recommend going this direction instead if you want to refine/drape directly on yourself kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZaslamLZcxnqs0

How's the house hunt going? I've bought and remodeled/restored two old houses, so I can relate to what you are trying to do.

Hello Bianca, Love it! I especially like this project because I think I could give something g like it a go… would it work with a wide elastic waistband or would it be impossible to get into without the zipper - unless it would be the elastic plus zipper? Thanks for sharing! 🙏J

An elastic waist requires that the waist measurement has to be large enough to pull over the hips, so more ease is needed in general, at least in a woven! In stretch fabrics things change, I use elastic for my knit skirts but they are very different than suiting wool for sure kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZ-ndXaEi56cpbM

You should do slits more often, you have beautiful legs and you are young. Also think they match very well with your aesthetic and the type of accessories that you collect, overall love it for you.

The necklace you wear in the intro is so strange and beautiful! Is it vintage or something newer? I'm very curious about it.

Thank you! It is two "new-ish" pieces layered, a big double strand chain I found on Poshmark, and a wide gunmetal collar with smoky rhinestones from BCBG that I found on Ebay. I have a hard time finding big bold gunmetal colored jewelry, but I love a dark/tarnished silver color so I am always on the lookout!

Tell me your life doesn't regularly involve public transit, without telling me. "I don't plan on running in this skirt. Or ever..." 😂 When I lived in a city with a decent public transit network, EVERY outfit needed to be suitable for running. :)
