Half lap joints probably would have been easier than the pocket hole joints. Stronger too. That being said, it’s a great simple design that would probably sell well as a matched pair or a set of three at different heights. For instance one each at 900mm, 600mm and 450mm in height.

Great idea! Now that I have a router table too, that would be super easy and fast to do. I've done pairings like you said, for various plant tables, and you're right, they do sell well. Thanks for watching!

Another great idea to create a high profit margin. One piece of advice. If you're recording your voice over with a mic connected to the mic port on your computer, change the cable that you are using to a stereo cable. It has two bands on the jack instead of just one. You audio may still not be in stereo, but it will at least be recorded to both channels and will come out that way in the final video.

Thanks for the advice, I was told this on another video today too, and we tested out and turns out my brand new mic is broken! it's a sony, it's going back to amazon and I'm replacing it with something else. What a bummer, can't update the audio track and it affects plenty of my latest videos. Oh well! Thanks for watching! It will be fixed starting in the next video, buying a replacement tomorrow at best buy.

What’s the purpose of the cross pieces? Not needed. The 2 x10 is plenty thick. I would save time and money by doweling the 2x10’s to the uprights.
@Mat_Builds
@Mat_Builds 4 ай бұрын
That's a good point and I might actually try that eventually. There is a little difference though, a gap of around 1/4" all around the 2x10, but even then, that could be done by just leaving a little space in the dowels, it would still dry in place well. Thanks for the thoughts and support!

Honestly, I'd keep the cross bracing for aesthetics alone.

Great build! Hope this isn’t a stupid question, since a 2x6 is really 1 1/2” thick are you making 1 1/2 x 1 1/2? Hoping to emulate some of these ideas.

It's a great question, and you're right, they are 1.5x1.5, but so will be the 2x2s at the hardware store, in addition to having their corners rounded. They used to make them that size but got cheap over time, and using tighter grain / better trees helped too I'm sure. I do find actual 2x4s (rough cut) in my recycled finds, and they're fun to build with , makes you realize how bigger 2" actually is versus 1.5" when I use them. Thanks for watching!

Does the paint prevent a tight glue up on the end grain of the cross pieces?
@Mat_Builds
@Mat_Builds 4 ай бұрын
I’ve not had problems with a non finished acrylic paint for that but I do avoid getting it in the end grain. I wouldn’t try it for a oil based paint that seals the wood or sprays like a few of my older videos but this paint basically acts as a tint, all absorbed into the wood. Thanks for watching!

@@89Johneboy I know you're probably asking this to the guy who said im one of the few doing it right. I agree that it's rare people doing wrong, but I''ve def seen it on youtube, probably not from known creators, but i've def seen people pull the saw in ASMR videos i've watched of wood working. I've seen some wild stuff on table saws too, some people have no sense of kick back and blade direction and definitely put themselves in dangerous spots while working.

Curious on where you buy your lumber? Prices are quite a bit higher for lumber in California...

I'm in Quebec, Canada. How much worse is it for say a 2x6x8? Here it was bad during covid (double even tripple prices) but i'd say we're back to pre covid prices and lower in some cases. Thanks for watching!

I have found great deals on wood on marketplace. I have received free almost full sheets of nice plywood absolutely free. Also, try any local cabinet shops. They used to let me dumpster dive for smaller cutoff pieces to get me starting using hardwoods.

Is that the Vevor pocket hole jig? If so, what is your opinion of it?
@Mat_Builds

It is and sadly i'd say go kreg. when doing 2x2s and things that dont go across side to side, they tend to get pushed in at a not 90 degree flat angle, which you can kind of see in my videos. Some day i'll treat myself to the kreg!

Did the math. Not adding up for me. 2 hours. That includes cutting to length all your pieces, staining each 10 x 10, later staining them, painting each other piece (4 sides each times 20 pieces), pre-drilling pocket holes, 24 total, and assembly.
@Mat_Builds

I went to check the original footage, which is 2:45 including alot of setting up angles and about 20 mins of letting the black paint dry. The bulk of the time, almost half, was indeed painting and staining. The rest is just super fast to do, i've made 12s of batches of small 2x items like this and with enough confidence and experience there's nothing to slow you down, no hours of sanding, there's just no big step. Using a step block to cut stuff with a mitre saw takes 1-2 seconds per cut, using a proper jig for pocket holes is about 5-10 seconds per side, painting with a roller saves a load of time. I actually wanted to make this video 1 hour but realized it wasn't possible, decided to not lie, make it 2. Thanks for watching Mitre saw cut pieces : 10 Pocket holes : 15 Painting and staining (bulk of time) : 45 Assembly : 30 Finish Coat : 5

That seems plausible to me. I was actually considering challenging myself to do this myself and try to do it in 2 hours or less. I think it would be challenging. The only thing that I would change is fastening using dowels instead of pocket hole. That's just what I'm used to personally.

The black paint I used was the only thing that slowed me down, I guess I could just do it earlier and stain later, the stain is almost immediately dry. if it was a race i'd figure it out haha! Thanks for the support!

Disturbing your neighbors by running a business from your home. The tools. The space. The cost is more than profit.

How much did you make with youe time while youre on youtube complaining about my neighbors? They also run tools because were in the country, not in some city condos, he makes metal roofs and i’m not there to complain. Make 5 of those in a afternoon and if you cant profit with them, you need to learn sales. Enjoy your day?
