Take a look at one of our business to business days at our company. We have so many different brands within the organisation that sometimes people never meet or see how other parts of our business work. These days help drive culture and educate everyone who works for us where I want the business to be in 2, 5 and 10 years. This is how I manage over 1,000 employees.

Never seen someone speak so openly about all aspects of business without there being something to sell to gain more information. Even if there is something to sell, we would be more likely to buy In as you give so much out for free from Your experiences. Thank you sir 👏

Absolutely laughed out loud at “if you got a pulse you got a job”, we have the same problem in the care sector right now. Never known recruitment to be so bad. Going to borrow this event for my team too, thanks James.

I’m not going to lie I go through moments of - I’m proud of my team for helping me in generating enough cash to support the livelihoods of all these people. Then I have moments of OMG this is so much money; especially in weaker trading months. It’s super expensive to employ people nowadays with so much employment tax.
@LukeStephenson

@@JamesSinclairEntrepreneur yeah I can imagine that at times it can be an emotional roller coaster. Aside from a few contractors, I only employ one fulltime member of staff and that's expensive enough...especially when you're trying to reinvest and grow at the same time.

With so much of your empire relying on discretionary spending, how do you plan ahead and recession proof a business like that knowing peoples disposable income is being squeezed so much? Also, do you have any meeting room hire or conference room hire? I know Bristol zoo did mid 6 figures on that alone at one point.

In the last recession we did really well. Our business isn’t expensive for people to feel good. In economic downturns , Child goods and Confectionery ( ice cream) have always performed exceptionally well in downturns. In 2008 Cadbury’s had record earnings. I have done videos on what to do in a recession. I’m excited, they’ll be so many opportunities. What I’m concerned about, is managing overheads.

Dunno why you don’t bolt-on collaborative workspaces next to your day nurseries. so many freelancers would use it. Meetings etc. Imagine ‘dropping’ your kid off then working next door. Just need Wi-Fi, a desk and a coffee machine. Monthly subscription. Sorted

It’s a great idea, we allow parents to work in our venues next door already. All you say is there; some do it but it’s not a huge up take.

£9.50 -£10.20 an hour to be a nursery practitioner at one of your day nurseries in Southend. Who can live off of that in that part of the country? No wonder living out of a bedroom is the norm in the south east. Also, you can get paid more per hour changing beds in a hotel. The country has gone to shit. Wages too low relative to cost of living. Cost of property out of control.

You make a valid point. The trick is to progress. Not to think what am I earning here but what am I learning here. We’re proud that people who started with us on minimum wage are now on great packages with senior positions within our company. Childcare is tricky, as parents can’t afford to pay more per day in many cases which means you have to be mega strict on Labour. With on site Labour salaries at 55% of revenue already , plus area and senior management takes you up to 60% of a nursery’s revenue, that is spent on Labour. The final 40% services food, tax, business rates , rent, utilities, repairs, marketing and then a profit which I for one have constantly re invested back in for my whole career. I wish people could earn more, the answer is either higher fees from parents or higher government educational grants or if you want to earn more; go for promotion and development.

The other issue with paying higher wages is, if the costs are so high the business has to charge higher prices to make profit, so the cycle continues..

@@JamesSinclairEntrepreneur One of the greatest difficulties people managers experience is keeping staff. Even if your labour bill needs to be kept low to cover costs I would argue that will inevitably increase costs. Staff turnover is higher and you have to keep going through all the expense of recruitment and training. I like having staff I know I can count on, who are happy where they are and don't necessarily want progress. Workers who do the basics and do them well are invaluable to any business and make everyone's life a lot easier. More businesses should look into paying staff more depending on how long they've been in the business.
