Well...first, your English is very clear and fluent. And when I listen to you speaking English, I can tell you've worked hard on learning American pronunciation. Second - I think there's nothing wrong at all with having some "color" from your native language in your English. Even among native speakers, their speech tells a lot about where they come from, both geographically and culturally. If you want to get closer to native speech and that's a priority, by all means, do it, but I'd also say "Don't stress about it." Also, you sound a lot more intelligent than a "Valley Girl!" Listening to you speaking, I can tell that English is not your mother tongue, but there's very little to tell me exactly where you're from; if I didn't already know, I would not think, "Ah, she's Russian!" But there are two things that quickly "give you away" as a non-native. The first is the cadence - the rhythm - of your speech. Part of it is the way you shorten certain syllables. An example is "project" - You lengthen the stressed "pro" and shorten "ject." But we'd generally maintain the length in "ject." This kind of shortening is what makes non-native speakers confuse "thirty" and "thirteen" -- they shorten the "teen" when its not accented. Listen to the rhythm The other is how you treat your final consonants. One example "Hot coffee" - Almost no Americans would release that "T" at the end of "hot." We'd pronounce the "t" but stop it in our throats (glottalized t). We'd say "Hoʔt coffee" Brits release the T. I'm not writing this to put you down, just perhaps to make some parts of our pronunciation a little more accessible. :)

Mimicking is the single best thing you can do. The thing that creates accents in the first place is reading words written with letters that you pronounce differently in your native language, so you end up creating bad habits from the beginning. Listen to how people speak first, THEN learn how to write and spell.

I don't understand why people are complaining you not talking "Actual American Enlish". You are clearly good at it. As a Russian speaker who is taking an accent reduction course in American English, the only thing that I caught in your speaking was intonation: like higher vowels and lower vowels and you speak relatively slower. Little proof: 1:40 - 1:52. Just see how you and other girls speak, it's visible there. It just from perspective and honest/healthy feedback. :)

There are a lot of nitpickers on here. She's a work in progress. Did any of you complaining about her accent realize that she learned English with a British accent initially. I think she has done a great job transitioning from that accent and moving more towards an American accent. Plus this woman speaks what...four languages. I see nothing to complain about here. Here is another great American idiom some of you should practice. Don't hate, congratulate.
@davedarius7346

beaujac311 I'm not really a hater neither am I nitpicking but the nitpicking comments are really stemmed from her stating that she has mastered the American Accent while many still notice that she has a foreign accent many a times. I'm not quite sure what her accent is but the nitpicking comments are mainly scrutised based on that reasoning.
@kayl804

yep, as much as I do feel bad for her after reading some comments I do understand where people are coming from. Cause when you do imply that you're basically perfect at something while you still have room to grow even if you're quite good at it, naturally people would be like... mmm no you're not. It's always better not to have really high expectations and be pleasantly surprised rather than expect too much and then be kinda disappointed. Especially after someone praised his own self.

When I speak, everyone thinks I am an American, although I look like your typical pretty Russian girl. I can tell you that you haven't mastered your American accent. Had you moved to the US when you were 10 years old, sure, you would speak like an American. But I still hear thick Russian accent present in your speech. She speaks really clearly. I have been in a couple English speaking countries but many people don't even speak as clearly as she does. She's definitely way above average. However, I guess speaking w accents doesn't mean that your English is not good. The thing is how clearly you speak to get your ideas across in my opinion. An obsession with a particular accent can make you neglect other important parts of learning a language. Plus, having accents can be unique and an advantage if it's communicable.

Hello, guys! I see that some people are trying to discuss about her accent just it is american or something like this I would like to say that it does not really matter that she has an american accent or does not the main point is that she is an up-level speaker and eager to help us to be better, I am not trying to compliment her as I am a learner and I have learned plenty of things by the help of Marina Thank you very much Marina for doing great job

What do you mean by “mastering your American accent”? When I listen to you I can clearly tell you’re not a native American English speaker and this isn’t at all an insult! And having a foreign accent isn’t bad! We Americans love foreign accents!

@@emrebilgi Before Marina came to the US, she spent only 2-3 months in the UK in total. There's no way for anyone to have a British accent after 2-3 months. My guess is that she mispronounced "hot" in the way many Russians do: instead of /h/, she used Russian [x], which sounds like /kh/ to American ears, and then instead of British /ɒ/ (which is the *open* back rounded vowel), she used Russian "o" (which is the *mid* back rounded vowel), thus it sounded somewhat similar to "o" in "cold". In fact, she mentioned in another video that she did not open her mouth wide enough when she came to the US, and if you don't drop your jaw low enough, you can't produce the /ɒ/ sound.

Your sound placement is off, it’s not resonating in the middle of the mouth as it should be for the Standard American Accent. Breathing is off (probably due to the tongue still sitting in the russian accent position blocking off the pharynx, and vowels are all over the place. Keep practicing and never give up!

Nick Rodney hi, I thought your comment is super interesting. I feel the same thing too. But can you elaborate more on that. I think American English is more relaxing and lazy than other languages. Asian speakers often have a high pitched tone. I’m really looking forward to know your thoughts on American Placement. Thank you
@nickrhodes4834
@nickrhodes4834 6 жыл бұрын
Phước Xương first of all you gotta bring the resonance down to the chest, you can notice how most Americans sound very chesty and compressed even when they speak higher in pitch, for non-native speakers you can achieve this by doing some singing exercises and getting that strong vocal cord compression. After that you need to focus on the proper breathing from the low abdominal area by breathing in deeply and letting your diaphragm expand - that will help creating that nice full resonant voice. And only then you start working on correct tongue position to create American vowels, everything starts with the schwa neutral vowel there’s plenty info on that you can find online. What she did was she’s done a lot of work on the vowels and a little bit on intonation which usually is the last step but her core resonance and placement is still sitting up high in the throat area that’s why no matter how precise her tongue position is she always sounds russian.

Listen, I'm a West European and I speak 5 languages fluently yet I HATE when people praise me or ask me to showcase my skills. No matter how light my accent is, I'll always sound foreign. The problem with her is that 1. she overestimates her English and 2. she loves the attention. Her English is excellent but the fact she thinks she sounds like a native American (when her accent is very apparent) is quite cringy.
