I think you should still definitely consider in the future moving the wall on the 2nd bedroom/storage unit upstairs to create a closet with a bi-fold door. That way you could add a window and have a great nursery/bedroom). And I have a small two-step folding ladder that I use in the kitchen to reach the upper cabinets (Can store under sink or in the pantry). But I love your overall design.

At 1:32 view of refrigerator it looks like you could move it a few inches to the left, leaving more space between oven/stove/storage bins & refrigerator... Enough to keep a folded 2 or 3 step stool (as suggested by RAS) and helping keep fridge cool.....

You did a great job on your home. On the kitchen window you could mount a 12” deep stainless shelf outside. The sliding window makes a great pass-through for food and dirty dishes to/from the grilling area.

Love the project, and really appreciate all the details you put in your videos on design, build and budget. For down the road here's a "want" not a "need". I haven't thought about how to do it yet, but if you put a grill on 2nd floor deck or think you will eat or entertain up there much, figure out a way to rig up a dumb waiter that you can haul items up from the kitchen on the outside. Will save a lot of steps up and down carrying food, beverages and dishes. There has to be a way to build one at a reasonable price and not be obtrusive. Enjoy.

Wonderful episode! It would be super easy and super functional to add a built in open shelf under your raised wall cabinets… there are lots of foto examples online. / I know the stair location is not the original one you intended. As your family grows, a future wall between the stairs and the shop might help conserve the house heat in the winter, essentially making the area more conditioned space.

Awesome. Just discovered your channel and subscribed. Love that SE section of Idaho. I'm over in Boise but was born in Pocatello and spent the first year of my life on a ranch near Arbon Valley, west of Arimo, through the gap if you're familiar with that region. My mother passed a few weeks ago and we drove out to the old ranch home to sprinkle her ashes. Beautiful place, especially this time of year with the gold quaking aspens. I'm envious of your shop house and will be watching more of your build videos. Congratulations.

My advice on paint. Don't go dark anywhere you plan to spend time outside near the house like on the decks. The dark attracts the heat and when the dog days of summer hit you will curse yourself for using a dark color that attracts the heat. Really nice spot you have.

You did a fantastic job. The lights outside make a nice touch. Hey, the quicker videos are just as interesting. From experience you don't want your grill upstairs. You will always be running back and forth to the fridge, grab a utensil, wash your hands, etc. A bathroom idea, is that it is not too late to still make the entire floor one huge shower pan and change the tile. It does not need to be the pebble/stone, and can be smooth (yet not slippery). A simple duct damper in the ventilation, set on a timer next to the light switch, would solve your heat/cold exposure. Whole room floor draining would eliminate the need to shield water from the shower as well. Unfortunately I learned all about this because my son became handicapped, but it is still a great solution. Nothing like being able to "hose down" the bathroom when your cleaning with hot water. Just epoxy the vanity below the countertop and seal any wall that does not have tile. The stainless counter under the window that Stuart Korte suggested is a great idea. You can always expand and do your patio later. You may want to put in a permanent brick grill area, pizza oven, stationary cooler, whatever, later on and then you will have even more counter space outside. I look forward to watching you get the lean-to up and the outside finished! Keep up the great videos.

I think you’ve done a great job here over all however your kitchen cabinet issue is a very easy fix your upper cabinets need to be 36” or possibly 42” cabinets Your bathroom is also a fairly easy fix as well if you just expand your shower move the shorter wall over to the other side of the tub and ad a steam shower unit into your shower as well you will love it just be mindful of where it drains into your shower as it will be scalding hot so you don’t want it on your feet I agree with your new idea to put the safe behind the door in your closet as well Again I think you did an awesome job especially on your first build here I’m very impressed

Frame a piece of aluminum foil and hang on the fridge right there, will look fine at a glance and be a conversation piece if anyone asks, as long as there's an airgap on the fridge side the foil will interrupt the line of sight and block virtually all of the heat transfer from the stove. The frame is just to keep it looking decent...

VERY NICE WORK! here on the Big Island of Hawaii it rains often. If your overhang on a high roof is short problems arise when wind forces rain in at an angle striking the building leading to rot. It would be nice to see a couple more feet of overhang on the roof. Not sure if this is a problem where you are. amazing job!!!💯

A couple of suggestions for the next one; design your kitchen to allow the refrigerator to be inset into the wall behind it- set the refer on the same wall with the sink, leave space on either side of the sink to work. IN your floor design, figure that "wet wall" to have lavy, tub fill and water closet on that wall- the refer should be on a section of wall just away from all of that and set back into wall- you will gain a few inches right in front of the refer- it's more valuable than gold in a small floor plan kitchen. As well, getting as much of your wet plumbing, hot and cold, into one short section of wall will keep costs lower and detail work confined. Think about leaving access that doesn't require breaking a wall. You may never need it, but when you do, repairing that broken wall will cost as much as the plumbing did. BTW, for a first kitchen, you did really well! The more carefully you "set" your design before you dig the first footing and then stay to your plan, the better you will control "spiraling costs"- think you already have that one! Your calls on the window over the sink and "spreading out a bit" were spot on- but you have to plan that when you lay out. All in all, really sharp, functional Shop House. If you but a propane connection on the porch for a BBQ or small fire pit, be sure to put a temp activated power vent discharge for the carbon monoxide fumes that may accumulate under the porch roof. I'm done- you done good, dude! FWIW, I am a plumber/HVAC guy, and contractor. As well as you did, your "after build" was a great examination of to do or not to do- many folks can't seen to do that. Can't wait to see how the shop finishes out- so get busy! FR

Please remember that all this "advice and counsel" was absolutely free and worth every penny of that cost! You young whipper snappers will have to figure some of it out for yourselves! First of all GREAT JOB!! I love the whole set up, especially windows, porch and balcony off Master BR. My only suggestion, and I noticed from the beginning, is the LR/Kit should be larger. I agree that the kit itself is enough and functional, but U will be sorry that u didn’t allow for a kit table. Also, your LR space is quite limited. The only reason why I’m even saying anything is for others to take this into consideration if this is to be your main home long term. But this guy will probably eventually build a main house in his property and this will become perfect guest quarters or in-law suite. So this guy will do great!! Here’s a message to the guys: Get a woman’s input along the way. Someone who’s already raised or is raising a family. Lol!!! This comment is with much adoration though. 💕

The cabinets in the kitchen just needs to be lowered. I did the same mistake when I removed the range top vent and added a microwave, my cabinets were to high to access. If I remember correctly, the microwave has to maintain a minimum distance from the stovetop of at least 30". Lower the side cabinet to the same lower level of the microwave and add crown molding or just get longer cabinets. The one sitting right of the sink looks high on its own and should be lowered or replaced as well. The fridge, make an enclosure and shift it to the left and make it flush with the wall... Just my opinion ;)

@deemack341 2 жыл бұрын
If you lower the cabinets, you can install shorter, square cabinets ( preferably with glass fronts) on top of the existing upper cabs. That's currently a popular style. It not only provides more storage, but also, you won't have to be concerned with dust accumulating on top of your cabinets.

5:33 I commented in the other video about money, ill copy paste it here. If you're renting it and getting income, get the place refinanced (cash-out refinance) and make sure the rent covers the DSCR at 1.25 (75-80% debt to NOI ratio), you could then grab that equity and use it to expand, fix up the place, even get cars to build or whatever your channel is about, it's also tax-free since debt isn't taxable, and its good debt since its being paid off on its own by renting. It's what the wealthy do to get rich, free money dude

honestly there are only a few things I would change. I would add a staircase on the outside of the house to access the upper deck. That way people wouldn't have to go through the master every time you want to hang out on the deck. the only place you could do it is on the wall that's shared with the kitchen but you have 3 issues. 1: You may be able to see into the guest bathroom from the stairs so you would have to put in either a blind to cover the small window or go to some glass that isn't see through. 2: You would have to adjust the planter box there + extend the deck space to clear the kitchen window. 3: You may not want to add stairs at all from a security standpoint. Currently the only way to the upstairs is through the shop so you would have more time to react to any sort of home invasion scenario. Now if that isn't really a concern for you then you could disregard that altogether. Other than that I would extend that wall in the storage room to make that a closet for sure. Plus add the loft as you mentioned. Personally i would use the loft as either a place for that pool table or a home gym area. All And all, I think this is a great design. Its put together very well and i did download the floor plan and only slightly adjusted it so I really do appreciate it!

Regarding slider windows: if you live in an area that has any dust or by a dirt road - over time the slider function will start to really frustrate you. Dust and dirt will get caught and lodged in the mechanism and will not slide easily. If you can, always go for crank or sliders that move up and down, not left and right.

I designed it off his plans and if you jog out in the 15ft and I forget the exact length forward you can create 3 bedrooms upstairs and have 1000sqft shop space and 2000sqft living space. Wich for a family would be good

Add the lean to on the side and if you were gonna do a family jog the back out so you can have a 2 extra bedrooms upstairs like where you were gonna put the mezzanine you mentioned before

Do you have a firewall between the living space and the shop? Are the doors to the Kitchen and Master Bedroom from the shop fire-rated as well? Also, any plans to stop the fumes/smells from the shop getting into the living space, seems you are just 1 door opening away from them going into the living space and I assume the master bedroom and kitchen doors are exterior doors with seals on them then? On the room right after going up the steps, don't know your local codes but here in GA, if you had added the closet you'd need to also add a certain sized window to the outside to be able to use it as a bedroom.

Love everything about this build. one question though, why did you make your bathroom and closest so long? personally, I would have liked a larger room on the end. and when designing the house portion did you build the rooms first and put walls around them or walls first and designed the rooms based on the size you had already?

Thanks! It’s just the way I liked it setup! Could be rearranged to anyone’s preference! Kind of a mixture. I would place items in the spaces and build walls and stuff around them.

Just found your channel, wanting to build one my self. What was your budget?(if I may ask) how much of the work did you complete, how much problems did you have with codes? Here in SW Louisiana (hurricane ally) I'm being told its difficult to build and pass building codes! What program did you yous to draft on your computer. Love the design but I would need a little bigger kitchen (do lot of cooking and hosting and also a way like mention in other comments a way to up stairs loft not only to keep traffic out of BR but away to escape in case of fire. TIA for answers

The upstairs bathroom door hits the toilet. Bad bathroom design. Change the door to a sliding door.

This is what have dreamed about for years! Both the wife and I noticed the toilet in the master is turned the wrong way. You'll learn that when your partner opens the door quickly, your knees will be the first thing to slow it down.

The small wall for the shower is for splash AND privacy. It seems strange to worry about privacy in a bathroom, but when you and your wife are in there at the same time, a small wall next to the toilet -- maybe four feet high, extending about a foot beyond the seat, will be nice.

Why no window in the second floor storage room? I would have gone black windows and paint the house light grey or white and i'd have enclosed the second floor stairs/laundry room with a wall.
