After divorce, the household income dropped by 2/3rds but I still had a ton of debt to pay off, both from before and during the divorce. I was grateful for people who gave hand me down clothing. I have a neighbor who tipped me $20 when I went grocery shopping. I saved everything I could, and like you, paid the debt off in chunks. Last summer, I wrote a check for the last $12000 I owed. It was magical! Since then, I've graduated community college, debt free, gotten a much better paying job, and I'm about to get a new roof on my house. Paid in cash. And don't tell the kids, but since they're so amazing, I've been saving enough to get them gaming laptops for Christmas! 🥰 100% budgeted for.

We were days away from filing bankruptcy when I just had this really strong feeling to push through it and intensely commit myself to paying it off. I cut all of our expenses to the bare bones minimum. Our last payment is in about 10 days. We paid off $35,000 in about 18 ish months. And we don’t get paid a ton but have decent jobs, the biggest thing was cutting our expenses and living on about half of what we make and commiting the rest to debt. It was worth the experience just for the lessons. I can’t wait to buy my husband a second pair of jeans, or some furniture for our empty apartment 🤣

I'm sure some people har disagree, but there's also the psychology of the fact tat money isn't going to loans when you are moving it around. It does provide a cushion, and when the cushion gets big enough, you can chunk it into a debt payment.

Why do Americans come back to their parents’ BASEMENT? Like, you had a room in their house, where did it go?

Most likely so he would have more privacy than he did in high school. Most US homes have finished basements and they are as comfortable as a second living room

in North America, basements are like an apartment. It's finished and confortable.

I have about £21,000 worth of debt from going to a university in England (pre-fees hike). The interest rate is so low the accepted way to deal with it is to pay the minimum, which is a percentage of your monthly wage, and let it cancel off after 30 years. Costs me about £80 per month.

"Chunking" is what my wife and I do as well. Now that we don't have any more debt we do it more to invest. We let our savings get to a certain threshold and then say "we don't need that much money in a crappy low interest bank account, so what should we do with it?". And we also always have an Investing Plan so we typically just use that accrued money to invest toward that plan. Sometimes that changes though to buy an investment property vs Vanguard. But the trick is to have the plan for that money, then you have to justify why to not follow the plan and do something else with it. If you don't have that logic, then it's too easy to spend it on a home renovation or boat or something else that's more so instant gratification and not long term gain.

I'm not based in the US, and I can't imagine how stressful living with such debt would be... I think that the debt-free culture and free health care system are such a wonderful thing of living in Europe. Of course there are some things the US are so much better at. I would love to live in some US states, after all.

I live in Canada (province of Québec) and it's similar to Europe. Living in the States seems so stressful! A wonderful country to visit, but to live..no way.

Well done Matt ..as a student no one should have that amount of debt it has gone crazy and adds to the stress. In creative roles we need to be as stress free as possible so makes no sense that the fees are this high

For me my biggest spender was collecting comics and Funko’s so now I say to myself I can only purchase each twice a year and got a 100-50 spending budget for each depending on how I am at the time. Definitely saving a lot of money instead of buying at random on a whim 😂

I’m 30 years old, living with my parents, and will be finished paying off $100k in debt this coming November! It’s one of the hardest decisions to move back home, but I know the freedom afterwards will be worth it. But my God is it difficult, not even the saving, but the social/dating life is drastically less being with my parents. Oh well, almost there!
