Welcome back to the channel and in this video, I will be showing you how I paint my Bolt Action Germans. In the past, I was a really slow painter but last year changed my approach to how I paint and I’m now able to fly through painting sections using a simple process of a limited palette of colours, washes and basic highlights.
I have used this technique for painting units of Fallschirmjager, Grenadiers, Osttruppen, engineers and Volksgrenadiers and I am really pleased with how it works. It allows me to get through tabletop standard figures and quickly get them used in games of Bolt Action.
While most of the paints that I use are from Vallejo, I know that there are conversion charts available online to allow you to use other ranges of paint. This isn’t a painting tutorial as such but the aim is to show people the process that I use to complete sections quickly and have them use it in their own painting or to modify or adapt the technique to help them complete units quickly.
If you have any comments or questions about the technique and process that I have used for painting my Bolt Action Germans or anything else, just pop them below and I will certainly respond to all questions and comments. If you enjoyed the video, please give it a like and consider subscribing to the channel for more Bolt Action goodness!

I totally understand your back issues, I have a work related back injury and I have taken up miniature painting to try and keep my sanity as I am now medically retired. I enjoyed your video and painting of your miniatures, keep up the good work.

Thank you and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah, the back pain, it has a big effect on my painting/hobbying but has been a lot better these past few months so fingers crossed. Good luck with the miniature painting, its a great hobby and will hopefully provide you with hours of enjoyment :)

Almost two years later I'm discovering this tabletop gem, awaiting my rule book and army guides. I did just recently receive my German grenadiers starter army which is why I'm here. I'm looking forward to enjoying the game and watching more of your videos!

Welcome to the world of Bolt Action, you are definitely going to enjoy it! I really had a lot of fun painting up my Grenadiers and other bits and pieces for my German army and I'm pretty sure you'll have a great time both painting and playing. I also have a playlist called Bolt Action Basics which are a series of short videos outlining the basic mechanics of the game 🙂

That's great man, really glad you found it enjoyable. That's pretty much still how I paint any German figures that I work on. It's such a fairly simple technique. The only part that I do differently these days is actually taking the time to paint the equipment. Good luck with your own project 😊

@@OnPointHQ Thanks! I've got a few done so far and I've got the knack of painting really nice looking uniforms - now I'm working on learning Zeltbahn.

It's always helpful when you start using a scheme that just works and allows you to really fly through the figures. With Zeltbahn, I always use a German Camo Beige base and then add a very basic camouflage pattern followed by a wash ☺

Thanks buddy, very kind of you! I've lost count of how many figures that I have painted using this process but I hope that others can take it and use the techniques when painting their own miniatures 😀

Hey Stuart, welcome to Bolt Action! Simple is pretty much what I aim for when I'm painting armies for Bolt Action. I always opt for a limited palette and keep highlights to a minimum. This allows me to quickly get figures painted and to the table top at a good speed 😊

It's pretty amazing what you can do when you approach painting differently. My biggest thing to overcome was accepting that not every gaming piece can be a masterpiece and concentrating on getting the numbers to tabletop standard :)

@@OnPointHQ I try to stay focussed on what they look like form 3' away. If they look good at that range, it is all good.

I think I need to adopt this system, good looking minis in a timely manner is much needed...... Especially when I have the MFA Kaiser on my back🤣. Thank you for sharing.

Very nice video, I liked how you identified how you were going to paint your figures without actually painting them in real time , all the best Garry

Cheers buddy! It's always really good when you nail down a specific painting process for an army or project that allows you to absolutely fly through when you come to paint more of them. If only I had something similar for when I paint Napoleonics 😁

Hey Tom, good question! I always prime in either brown or a mixture of brown a s green. My go to is usually Vallejo Burnt Umber as this tends to work really well with the field grey. Good luck with the Grenadier army! 😀👍

Hi I have just started to get into bolt action and I am having a problem with strong tone once it drys it is very shiny ,is this correct or should it be dull
@OnPointHQ
@OnPointHQ 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Phil and welcome to Bolt Action! This has happened to me in the past with Agrax Earthshade too. Sometimes it can dry with a shiny glaze, other times it has seemed very muddy and streaky. I always remember to shake my washes before using them. I've used Army Painter strong tone also and it's happened a couple of times. But a wash ideally should be dull after it dries ☺
