If you're painting goblins, guardsmen or the like, Citadel's range of Contrast paints are a great tool for getting good-looking results quickly. But what about something more historical than Space Marines and Stormcast? READ MORE:
In my ever-so-humble opinion, I think they're a great tool with a lot of potential use in the historical wargaming space. To my mind, there's three typical 'styles' when one thinks of painting miniatures: toy soldiers, Hollywood, or display pieces. Typically, I tend to find most wargamers sit somewhere toward the center of the Hollywood look - mostly accurate, with a handful of deliberate errors or omissions that make painting simpler or save money on a couple of paints! These Contrast paints definitely lean a little further toward the 'toy soldier' look, but I don't think that need be a terrible thing, especially considering how quickly you can get painted miniatures on the table. Ultimately, it all looks better than grey plastic and bare metal!
If you want to check out Michael Earley's write-up on the methods he's been using for his own WWII-era stuff, make sure you drop by Wargaming3D and take a look: www.wargaming3d.com/2019/08/0...
Do I think these would work for Napoleonic figures, troops of the American Civil War, or even further back? I certainly think so! There's a little bit of playing around required and you do need to buy into the style, but ultimately they're pretty nifty additions to a painter's arsenal.

I've been working on this a bit more and experimenting, and my application is getting better. I do think I was using too much green in my first attempts - for some reason I was doing it 1:1 with the grey before. Now at 2:1 grey to green it looks a lot better. I've made two little changes to this method - I use Aggaros Dunes for the gaiters because Skeleton Horde is such a weak color. Also, I found a decent way to simulate metal - 2:1 Basilicanum Grey to Space Wolves Grey. A couple thin coats of that makes the weapons look like steel. Thanks again for showing me that Contrast paints can get good results! I never used them for much before aside from shade, since I always did Space Marines.

I am impressed with how well the Contrast Paints work on historical miniatures. I did not think the colors had enough range but clearly they do. You can make your own contrast paints. 1 part paint 1 part Liquitex Matte Medium Small amount of dish soap. (Breaks the surface tension) This recipe will allow you to use any color you'd like. It has been around for years. With GW doing contrast paints the technique has entered the spot light like it is brand new.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 4 жыл бұрын
I remember the same being said of ink washes back in the day, before GW even updated their own inks to washes. Always available, certainly, though there's something to be said for the convenience factor of everything mixed up in a pot to use straight away! I do still have a soft spot for Winsor Newton's yellow ink, though - that stuff's fantastic over just about any white undercoat you can name. GW being such a prominent force does mean it helps launch awareness of a lot of techniques that aren't otherwise commonly known. A fair few chaps I know in the hobbying circles have been ink painting Orks for years, but there's only so far individual voices can reach; when the big names do it, it attracts attention. At the last, though, people will have a little more opportunity to see what is possible.

Nice video. Been using contrast paints on a lot of parts for my Japanese SLNF since they came out. I have quite a few actual Japanese ww2 weapons in my safe at home so I can see the color of the woods and metals used first hand. I found snakebite leather contrast is the perfect wood color. For my gun metals I paint them boltgun metal(GW) first and then use the Templar Black contrast on them. Makes them identical to the real things. I dont have any real German weapons to compare to but I assume it would be similar given the time period. Looking forward to trying the fleshtones out, didn't have any of them the last time I painted any faces or hands. Your results look frikking awesome.

@@SonicSledgehammerStudio That flesh contrast was the one that first i added to my order :) In my Crimson Fists army i converted every power armor mini that didnt have a helmet to get one, dremeling bare librarian heads out of psychic hoods, cutting away tech marine heads etc and scouts got third party jin-roh/helghast looking heads in part because i really dislike painting skin. In the two orders ive placed i have all the colors you list except for skeleton horde that was out at both retailers, i figure ill try thinning one of the browns with contrast medium and hoping that works out, otherwise ill just use a regular wash. Im mixing my Warlord Late War Grenadiers with their Afrika Korps box for more bodies without the zeltbahns because i dont really like those and also to get more uncovered helmet heads, the light mortars, prone LMGs and Pz 39 AT rifles, the uniforms look alike enough that when painted in "feldgrau" they should be almost indistinguishable except that i dont think they have gamaschen/gaiters. Getting on with these Germans is making think of using them as part of a combined Guard/Marines army, might try painting some Primaris Marines in Feldgrau or, since they are the elite shock troops if the imperium, maybe Black SS Parade Battle Armor :D

I really appreciate this video. I picked up Konflikt '47 last week - I'm primarily a Dust player but the walkers appeal to me - and I really need a way to get 2 dozen Grenadiers table-ready without spending a month or two to do so. Add in the fact that I have pretty much the entire Contrast line, as opposed to very few military paints such as Vallejo Model Colors. Can't wait to give this a try!

They can take a little getting used to, it's true! When I first started using them I couldn't seem to replicate any of what I'd seen - I still can't figure out how people are getting perfect smooth power armour with them, for example! I think the trick with them is to have more on your brush than you might expect, but not as much as you'd think. A hopeless bit of advice, really, but it's how it best makes sense in my head. ;)

@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 2 жыл бұрын
There isn't a huge difference ordinarily, except when it comes to using washes and the Citadel Contrast line. Some metal figures will have slight pits or imperfections in their surface; nothing out of the ordinary, but which can become particularly noticeable after using Contrast on them. Minding how you apply your primer and ensuring even, smooth coverage will ordinarily take care of the most of that.

Uniform Grey is pretty dark by comparison to Grey Seer. It's a great primer, though - I use it for my Germans when I'm painting them using the traditional methods. Creed Camo should do the job.

I done everything you did but for whatever reason I can seem to get my German as smooth looking finish as yours, mine seem a little Chalky. Can you explain why? Thanks
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 2 жыл бұрын
Could be that the primer isn't quite perfectly smooth, but ordinarily a varnish afterwards will help pull everything together and even out the finish.

You beauty, I’ve just started priming my Germans and was trying to figure out a contrast recipe for Feldgrau

If you're planning on making up an army using this stuff, it might be worth getting a mixing bottle so you've got a bunch of it ready to use. :D

It is primed? "I've primed this guy with Grey Seer." You don't want to paint straight on to bare plastic!

@@soldierforchrist631 It's really good stuff. Both Grey Seer and its partner primer Wraithbone are incredibly smooth, ideal for Contrast.

Wow Damn...it cost $43 to get that Redgrass brush shipped to me. No way would i use it on contrast paints. Wish i could get equipment like that.

This video's almost four years old, and I'm still using the same brush. It doesn't have to be a Redgrass brush, of course, but I find it's often cheaper in the long run to make an investment in decent tools and just look after them well rather than replacing them every six months. Still, past a point, a brush is a brush as long as it holds its tip.

@@SonicSledgehammerStudio Thats awesome dude. Sounds like a great brush. But my head would be on a spike if is spent that much on one of those.

What "almost working full time" has cut into your hobby time? What a shame that is...

Well, not so much my own time as the time required to do these videos. Fifteen minutes on screen takes about three hours work in some form or other, so it does make for a challenge to find the time necessary when I'm not the unemployed bum I was when I started on these!

You do realize that when you finish and put it on display the camera is still too far away to even see anything you can’t even designate what is what is far as his gear obviously you can tell what a rifle is but it’s so far away you can’t even tell what type it is… Will you zoom in on the finale and give us a close-up please…!!!!!!!

It's a two year old video - I can't do much about zooming in now, unfortunately. The product page for the Grenadiers might be of some help, though: eu.warlordgames.com/products/german-grenadiers-plastic-box-set? Otherwise, MP44.nl is where I go for the most comprehensive photos and breakdown of German kit: mp44.nl/equipment.htm
