Did you paint on the Averland Sunset yellow with a brush or was that from a spray can? If it's painted on, did you start on a white or a black primer? I would like to spray paint my models with a starter primer yellow. Any suggestions?

Know it wouldn't do well algorithm wise but it would be awesome to get more Independent and smaller studio spotlight videos. Be it STL or physical range, would give you a wide range of themes and styles to work with as well. Would love to see something from DiceHeads on your channel if I was to be greedy an pick one out. Otherwise as always your channel is criminally under rated for the quality of work you do both in painting and presentation.

I'd like to ask a question.I've seen a lot of videos where they advise using a black primer and then doing a few drybrushes in progressively lighter colors. They say it helps with how light and shadow look. Do you think that's actually worth the effort?
@dj-bully3 күн бұрын
This might seem like a dumb question, but I tend to worry about these things. When people say "a damp brush", I understand that as a brush that's been cleaned in water, then pressed on tissue to drain the water out, so that the water is gone but the brush isn't dry yet. Have I understood that correctly?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio2 күн бұрын
Yup! You got it. Just damp, and definitely not dripping with water. A quick rinse and then 'dried' like you usually would.

A fun alternative could have been to keep the upper jacket as the leather trench coat, and have the lower garment be the bottom of a catholic priest's tunic, or even a priest's cassock if you wanted to go in with some bright red edge highlighting and buttons(if there were any on the sculpt). Also a very cool technique I've seen for applying spatter with Blood for the Blood God, is to just barely wet the area with white spirit first(maybe go over the top of a not quite dry oil wash) and then do whatever method you have for applying spatter and then flick it about with a brush(possibly one also barely damp with white spirits) and the fact that the two solvents wont mix has you end up with the tiniest drops of glossy red on the miniature which helps get that in scale spatter that is so hard to achieve. Obviously this would normally be done in conjunction with a regular layer of your blood FX paint for the areas that have a lot.
@TheMichaellathrop3 күн бұрын
So a couple of things,first how close of an analog are the browns in this new range to Rhinox hide, Mornfang Brown, and Snakebite Leather? Second the Normans were French at the point of the English conquest, so you also had the option to go with a french uniform style. Third I'm curious why you went with the stabilizer over water for that final Sunburst Ochre wash with a dusty finish? And Fifth given the connection between Alchemy and later the theory of the 4 humors and the Zorn pallet I would love to see your interpretation of one of the armies using it. PS sixth how close is the color on Grimdark Shadow to something like winter streaking grime?

Awesome model 👍🏻 Love the aesthetic of the trench crusade models. How do they compare in size with GW 40k humans, like Krieg or cadians? Awesome paint job 👍🏻
@SonicSledgehammerStudio3 күн бұрын
They're very slightly bigger than 40k stuff. As a straight comparison, think of the Cadian Castellan. That miniature's up on a tactical rock, right? The Lieutenant stands _very_ slightly taller than the Castellan does, and he's on flat ground. I'd say reducing the STLs to about 96% or so would probably give you a similar size, but that's just eyeballing it.

Your explanation of "why" for the pre-wash is more-or-less the same reason why I've switched to using a brown primer for a lot of minis, particularly if they need to look grimy or use a lot of "natural" colours. It was something I learned by chance in the method I used for painting my Cities of Sigmar.

I really like this guy. I admit that I was skeptical about Trench Crusade until very recently--so many KZbinrs were talking about it that I assumed that there was a big sponsorship thing going on, but I heard this week that they had almost no marketing budget and this is all word of mouth. It makes me much more interested. (And I can't deny they look great.)
@zackcook51234 күн бұрын
The fact all the popularity is word of mouth is incredible. I was sold when the Devs openly encouraged kitbashing and proxies
@SonicSledgehammerStudio4 күн бұрын
I was in a similar boat, honestly. Seeing it suddenly appear out of nowhere, everyone talking about it at all at once... all seemed a bit convenient! But after checking it out, seeing the lineage of the design and some of the team's previous work, it all clicked into place. Plus the fact so much of it is free and they're adamant about seeing people's conversions and kitbashes is pretty cool!

@SonicSledgehammerStudio4 күн бұрын
Not any Stirland Mud specifically, but some of the paints used during basing get stipped on the jacket while doing the base. It's all part and parcel of the basing step, so I tried to cut this under twenty minutes with the rest of the basing stages in the other video.

There are many reasons I love coming back to this channel. You have a relaxing, and calming, approach to painting which gives me confidence to follow along . Your motto of 'trust the process' is one I repeat often a lot :) You show which paints etc you are using (often with options), which is really helpful when starting a project in a new time period. Also, the skills from one video often crossover to other projects. As a recent example; your tips for quartering shields will now be applied to SAGA knights, Napoleonic banners, and a home-brew Space Marines chapter. And bravo on the beard. Use conditioner on it every day until it stops itching, and you are definitely ready for Napoleonics :)
@tremolo_painter4 күн бұрын
I forgot... could you cover lesser known nations... Finnish Bolt Action, Russ SAGA etc? It would be good to see what differences make them unique.
