(Some quick details… DPE: Jay Lawrence, Date of Temp Airman Issuance: 2/21/24, Base airport: SGJ, XC plan: Plant City (KPCM)… let me know what else you wanna know!)

Wow!! You probably had the toughest nut check ride examiner on the planet. Good on you kid passing with that amount of pressure, well done you most certainly deserve your PPL you certainly earned it.

Good stuff. I got my Private Pilot in early Jan 2024. I really respect you because I know how difficult it is and how tenacious you have to be to achieve this MAJOR goal. I probably slept an hour the night before my check ride. I had so much anxiety. I walked into the oral in a no sleep funk. Terrible. I should have done what you did and split it up. But I passed it so I'm glad I got it all done that day. I also heard that if you do exceptionally well on the written they will really try to bust you.

Congrats. This was fun to listen to. I was supposed to take my PPL checkride today but had to cancel for the 4th time now. This time due to weather. Honestly your story seems miserable but I'm so happy for you. Its awesome to know that even though your DPE sounded like a hard ass, you rose to the occasion and conquered it. Congrats again and best of luck to you on your flying carreer

Thank you but honestly there is no reason to be jealous. It was the hardest work of my life. I sacrificed a lot for it!! If you force it to be your life, flight training will get in the way of everything else (instead of the other way around) but that takes all the will power in your soul! It’s in there, if you want it!

In Australia, they test us by releasing a live King Brown snake when we open the carb heat. It keeps us alert for the rest of the flight.

Took my checkride in June of'87 in a Cessna 152. My check pilot was a WWIi fighter pilot, who operated a T-6 Texan out of a local airport. Conditions were near MVFR, I had little right rudder/nose wheel deflection, the CP was a grouchy somebitch who did his best to rattle me throughout the entire flight. Had no horizon during the entire flight. but wasn't allowed to even glance at the instruments without being told, "Keep your eyes out of the cockpit! You're not an instrument pilot." When I pointed out that I had no horizon, he barked, "Never argue with the check pilot!". Then he'd throw things on the floor or behind the seats and have me retrieve them -- while performing the maneuvers he was putting me through. When we finally landed, tied down the plane and went through the oraI, I was convinced that I had failed. Was shocked when he pulled out his little typewriter (this was 1987, don't forget) and told me how well I'd done as he typed up my temp ticket..

When I went for my checkride, I still needed a cross country flight and a half hour of time to get to 40 hours. So, I planned a cross country to the examination airport, to finish up my flight time then take the exam. So, after flying out on a short cross country, I was approaching the checkride airport. Got the Weather, entered the pattern and watched a twin talk off in the direction I was landing. I had never flown to this airport before, it had long wide runways. On final as I came into land, I thought the wide runway was messing with my perspective as I was about to flare. Things didn't seem right at all, ground was whizzing past me, the perspective was wrong, like i was racing along. I flared, landed, speeding along with the rollout, I passed the windsock of the airport. The windsock was sticking straight out, lots of wind going in the same direction that I was going. While I was in the pattern, the wind had shifted 180 degrees and I had done my first downwind landing with more than a 15 knot tailwind. Left me wondering, had the examiner just seen me make a downwind landing. Yes, he had seen the whole thing. I passed, with about 41 hours, and he gave me a nice speech about continuing to learn and improve.....

I’m close to taking my check ride as we’ve discussed. I think I would have to remind him of a “sterile” cockpit during TT&L. Or I might have reverted to 20 year old JT and said “shut the f@ck up”. Great insights and commentary as usual. I’m already starting to get anxious. I will let you know. Great video can’t wait to hear about your progress on your instrument rating.

Thanks for sharing. Witnessing your ambition and aptitude, I'm curious why it took you over a year to pass checkride after passing written. How many hours of flight training before checkride?

I had 115 hours when I did my CR. I began with very few funds and it was rough. I could only afford to go once a week for the first many months. Then I secured a really good job to where I was able to go more often. But I was consistent and was at school at least once a week from when I began on 8/29/22!!

@@ChloeMichelle-tn8qp I would have set the phase of flight to him as "Quiet Time", and treat him as a passenger (up front) or like a baby. Telling my passenger, that at certain points of the flight, either I wont talk to you, or acknowledge you, or it "Quite Time" and only speak if its an Emergency. I think this is what your DPE was trying to find out, and not your political affiliation, as Im sure I would have lost it myself if that's the case. Politics has NO place in the air, especial in the cockpit !
