Not gonna lie, I could of scored higher if I was a faster reader. Last 10 mins I had 15 questions to go and I rushed it, but I passed first try and that’s all that matters. @@ane5903 It’s nothing crazy, I don’t have any experience, it’s just help desk, but with a secret clearance. Everyone should know what that means. Interview was good, it’s a typical interview but then they hit me with like 8 technical scenarios. From easy to hard networking and security.

Congratulations for passing your exam. I d also add that you can t have absolutely any distractions in the room. I turned off my phone alarm and got really close to being kicked out. Do not go off camera for anything. And don’t spend ages on any single question. The 90 minutes are just about spot on for how long you need.

@@titiomotoso7327 HI there. One book I relied on heavily is The Darill Gibson 601 book. Its a great reference for security plus and cybersecurity in general. I love that book. Its really easy to read and practical. Great investment.

When you were reviewing your questions did you change any of your answers? I took my test on the 19th and scored a 721. I did have questions marked for review but didn’t change them because I didn’t want to second guess myself and get it wrong 😭

Yes!! I flagged 10 or so questions, changed 3-4 of them? I also got a 700 something but don’t know if changing those answers hurt or helped me lol, they say you should always stick with your first answer tho so idk if it was the right thing to do 😅 i even changed a lot of the open-ended question answers in the beginning of the exam

I procastinated during my bootcamp and read about 100 pages as well in the first 2 months I was in my bootcamp. Now that I have graduated, I'm about 130 pages away from finishing my Sec+ book. I feel like staying home for me, makes me.. procastinate alot-- especially when I get tempted to check my phone every time I finish a paragraph or a section. I have been getting strict on myself and put sections and time that I needed to finish it by on my phone calendar to help me out from strolling off. :) Thank you for this by the way.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I am currently doing Info Sec, but wondering if i should switch to data science related profession. Whats your take on data analytics/ data science career vs cybersecurity roles? Which one do you think have a better future?

They’d both make great careers, i did undergrad research with a professor on a big data project and i was interested in data science for the longest time but imo, data sci/ml roles require a lot more education, most of the roles i was applying for required at least a masters if not a phd, im sure there are some that take bachelors degrees but they’re mostly for data engineer or data analytics roles which could be considered relevant experience to eventually get into a data scientist position but i find that security is more about experience than formal education, i was an info tech major and got a security cert from my college program (not industry recognized) and it helped me land an entry level role in security (its a rotational program) and certs can really get your foot in the door and theyre a lot cheaper than a masters/phd program. They both have really good job prospects so it’s really which you prefer and how much formal college education you want! Most companies gonna need lots of data scientists and security folks :)

I am trying to find a better goal such as targeting security engineer or security consultant for my next role. My current work as analyst doesn’t feel as full-filling as I expected. I understand exactly what you mean! As of now, i’m completing my rotation program in about 6 months and im still deciding if i should go back to software development or continuing in an info sec analyst role, i have an interest in both so would prefer a security role with the chance to write scripts. It’s good that you know your current role isnt what you want to do longterm, many companies are looking for internal hires nowadays anyway so you may be surprised if you have a chance to bring this up to your manager about your career goals if they can help you. Security engineers/consultants have really good job security and they basically do something different everyday so you’ll never get bored lol, good luck in finding your dream job 😁

Hey Sandra, so I was kinda reading about the certification and I came across many sources saying the Comptia Network + is requirement for you to take the Comptia Security +, was this the case for you?

Hey! Nope the network+ is not a requirement for the security+ cert! Many people do recommend getting the network+ first because everything on the network+ is on the security+ so it’s a good way to ease into the material if you need to. However, if you can study through all the topics of the security+ (which is basically also all the material in network+), you should def do the security+ because you’ll only have to pay one exam fee and get it done with in one sitting. Some relevant cyber experience is also recommended but definitely not required to take the security+ too! I literally just signed up on the site, scheduled & took my exam and that was it! They dont ask for any prior certs or experience, good luck!! :)

Taking the security +601 end of April, just started studying and took took practice exam with only 25questions and made a 55%. I have a lot to learn

Just go through it about 3 times and you ll be surprised how many more answers you ll get right. First time I did some practice tests I felt like I ll never pass. Hundreds of acronyms but the majority start to sink in after a while.

Exactly as Paul said! I went thru practice exams multiple times so if i saw that acronym on the test, I’d remember it from there, 55% is pretty good if you think about it knowing more than half of whats on your exam. Goodluck studying the next two months!

Since this cert wasn't required by my current team, I don't get a pay raise sadly haha.. but I will definitely be including this in my EOY review as an accomplishment. But if you're looking for an average salary for Security+ cert holders it's about $59,000 (based on ZipRecruiter)

I was offered a grant to study CompTIA A+, network+, security+, Microsoft MCA sure administrator associate, Amazon aww cloud practitioner, Amazon solutions architect associate, & Cisco CCNA, all for a 24week course. But since I don't have experience in that area I'm not sure if that is for me and I'm not sure if I'll be able to nail a job after 6 months. Good luck!! 😁 From what i’ve heard, most of the material is the same but they added a new mobile security version, you could probs get away with using some 501 resources based on comptia’s official exam concepts list!

Honest Question: I am in school for a BS in Cybersecurity, is it necessary to get A+ and Network+ before I go for Security+ ? Or wait until after college? I am so confused on how to tackle this dilemma. If I can go straight for Security+ I'll do that. Any recommendation would be great! Thank you

You can go straight to a security + that’s what I’m doing. Also I’d recommend joining Black Cybersecurity Association for a lot of free resources and study session every Saturday 🙂
