hi everyone! in this video, I’m walking through how we’re tackling kindergarten this year, why we are not following the public school calendar + what our school year will look like in 2024 with a year-round schedule!

Our schedule is pretty similar. We do 3 weeks on one week off. My kids are 4th, 2nd and kinder and they love this. This also works better for us because the long breaks tend to mean there’s more practice work to remind them of what they had already learned. Now we don’t have to do that.

I totally agree! It just makes more sense, in my opinion, to have shorter and more frequent breaks!!

We are doing 4 weeks on, 1 week off this year. I have a first grader. We still going so well! We are in Australia, and our year only began in March due to an interstate move. We will finish early Dec, and then start back mid Jan 2024 for his second grade year. Thank you so much for sharing this planning - it is super encouraging, and really interesting to hear the thought process behind your decisions.

Wow, I love that!!! ✨ Interesting how we came up with a similar plan, even through entirely different circumstances. I think we’re onto something ☺️ thank you for sharing! 🙌🏼

Such thoughtful planning!💛 I love the idea of breaks! We may try 4 day school weeks with 6wk on 1 wk off

Thank you!! I have actually considered decreasing our school weeks to 4 days as well. By Friday, I’m usually wanting a break as much as they do. And I’ve actually noticed that when I do give them an extra Friday off, by Monday they seem like they have retained more in that last week and are more ready to learn again. So definitely something to consider for sure! Do you homeschool year round or follow the school year?

@brooklynleighhh We follow the traditional school year. My family attends a homeschool co-op every other Friday, so that technically counts as a school day, but I plan our curriculum for just 4 days a week. I love my Fridays 😁 4 days hitting the books is about all I can handle sometimes lol

This sounds so perfect for you guys! It was really fun hearing how you're thinking through these things and making your homeschool work for your family. I loved seeing the calendars because I am so like that too. I love a good plan haha

Thank you!! It’s funny because I’ve always been a routine/schedule/daily to-do list kind of person, but this year I’m kind of letting loose with lesson plans and JUST following a rough schedule. It’s surprisingly freeing 😂

I love that! I don’t see a need to wait to start until the next “school” year. Just whenever it makes sense for you!! 🙌🏼 what are you using for your kindergartner?!

@@brooklynleighhh Right now we're mainly just doing Math with Confidence K and the Pathway to Fluency (SoR aligned) reading curriculum from The Moffatt Girls. Trying to decide if I want to formally add something else for the time being but we do a lot of interest-led exploration into science, nature, and geography. We do have a music program but we have not done well with actually doing it 😅

So you’re doing k5 from may to December? Then 1st Jan-nov? I’m really thinking about year round.

Yes! We are kind of skimming through the first few weeks of lessons because there is so much review, and I made sure to map it out so that we are finished at the beginning of December so he has a good break before we start 1st grade! The goal is for our school year to match up with calendar year instead of the traditional school schedule! It just works better for our needs 🙌🏼
