Does your family prefer traditional summer or year round schooling?

Our kids never stop learning - while we pull back a little bit over the summer break, I'm always finding ways for our kids to keep expanding their world. Thanks so much for this video - I always love the unique perspective you provide to help homeschooling mamas personalize their schooling for their own families!

This is our first time homeschooling but we’re going year round. Primarily because I’m working on a degree myself and this allows me to structure the kids’ schedule around mine. They got 2 weeks off during my finals and then we all took another 2 weeks. Now we’re working daily while I’m more available and I’m doing some summer study myself. Also, my kids forget too much over the summer and I want to foster constant learning. So far it’s going great!

We also love it the south, the the heat is a big reason I tell people we only take a small break between grades. That was we can enjoy the much more delightful October/November, and March/April temperatures

We started HS in 6th and have always had that June,July off…it’s needed ..it’s a feeling of being a kid..playing outside, swimming, play with neighbors, make s’mores…the just knowing “I don’t have to think about school”…then we take fall break and Christmas but skip the holidays that we don’t think we should take off…we do 90 days from august to end of dec then 90 days from Jan 1 till we’re done. Mama needs a rest too…plus VBS happens in the summer

I keep us on a year round schedule because I love having all of Dec off. We also take all of June off and then in July stick to a 3 day school week. It works well for us

This year we are trying out year round schooling. We are using Beautiful Feet Books: Around California (we live in CA). So we will be reading, doing art, watching short educational videos, and field trips. No math (unless he chooses) or a ridged schedule. Our first lesson was the ice age so we went to the library, watched a couple short videos, did a favorite ice age animal report, and this weekend we will be going on a hike to see some mammoth rubbing rocks. So far my son has been having so much fun with this. On his own he pulled out a ruler to measure how big each animal was so he could visualize it (he was doing math without realizing it). I thought I would get more pushback because he’s used to having the traditional summer break but he’s having fun with this one.

First-year homeschooling and we are doing a mixture haha! Taking next June off because we do multiple Vacations Bible Schools, and then my birthday is the first week of July. So mind July - end of May is what we are planning! We are going to try and do 5 weeks on, 1-2 weeks off, and a longer Christmas Break. This was very helpful advice, thanks!! :)

Totally get you with the weather. We are in south Louisiana. It’s just like you said miserably hot, pouring, or a hurricane is hitting us.

I'd prefer year round schooling but we live in a large neighborhood with lots of kids and two neighborhood pools and my girls prefer to take the summers off so they can spend time with their friends. The one year I tried it without getting their input didn't go too well! They are going into 8th and I always ask them their preference. We do always vacation during the school year.

I'm doing summer homeschool from June 5th to July 7th. It just so they won't brain dump.

We year round. We live in a summer tourism area. We work pretty diligently during the summer. Then, in late Aug/Sept, most summer things are still open, and we enjoy it while others are in school. With my husband's job, it's easier to take leave during odd times. We love the flexibility of vacation planning. We typically do 8-10 weeks on and then a few weeks off rotation.

Year round so we can take our time and take breaks and vacations as needed. Definitely lighter in the summer.

We take some time off, but we decided a long time that it's so hot outside (here in AL) that we just do some light school work. We have a pool, but that won't stop us from being structured in some way and preventing the summer slide.

Normally we do a combination. I will usually start school the first week of July, go six weeks, and then take a week off. We should have most of December off this way. Then I switch to following the public schools in our area in January. We like to have Mardi Gras week and Easter/Spring Break off as the same time as the public schools. This year our summer is jammed pack! My daughter loves the theatre and is going to be involved in two plays. She wants a week off after her last show, so we are going to be starting the last Monday in July and basically following the public schools in our area (they start early August). We will have a little wiggle room with illnesses and emergencies. Praying that hurricane season doesn't wreck our school year.

Mine are young so we year round with 3 weeks off in June. But my son goes to summer camp in July and August for 1 week each which will be 2 more weeks of break. We take a vacation in December and April as well so we have lots of things to look forward to during our school year!

We do year round even tho we tend to take more breaks in the summer. It gets hot here but the hotness does really start till June. There's maybe a few days here and there in April and May. Depends where we go though. If its camping, beach, lake, etc then its summer which is what we usually like to do. If its like indoors stuff we prefer when its less busy just like you say.

We take a month off in October/November and head to the beach. During the summer we take about 2-3 weeks. This year we are going to go 6ish weeks on, one week off. I think my son will do much better with this schedule. He usually has a lot of "sick days" due to chronic issues so I am hoping this will help him.

We kinda do year round but we take off from Thanksgiving to New Years. Other than that we do one week off every 7 weeks/ as needed for camps/activities etc

We love year round schooling. We school about 40-45 days then take 2 weeks off. The first week seems to go by in a blink so we do 2 weeks. Our last day is 7/7 but I'm thinking about trying to figure out how to change our summer break to diff months. Not sure. Their friends all have break during summer months. We only take about 8 weeks off for summer.

Ugh the 120 heat index🥵. We school all year and break whenever needed. I tried to give him a month off but that didn’t last. We love to vacation when kids are in school. We do English and Math first thing in the morning. Everything else is in the afternoon. Sometimes we take a few weeks off of tye PM subject. Sometimes we don’t do any school. Depending.

We are only taking a month off for summer or I'm going to try because I'm moving back to the States from Germany. (Military family) I would really like to dwindle down the summer due to her forgetting math.

Books, documentaries, learning apps, workbooks, there's all kinds of things to keep them busy out there. Have a reading challenge at home! That's what my kiddo is doing.

Maybe you can ask them to write down a list with things they want to learn and how they like to do it. Then you can think together what they could do alone. You could also let them do challenges (learn all the 50 states, 190 something countries and territories of the world, one short story a week). Maybe you could also think about doing a more demanding curriculum. I also was a child that wanted to learn all the time and the years when I did the most stuff on the side was the time school bored me the most. Or get a lot of books from the library for your kids to read on their own.

The same happened here. I found things they can do independently. Tracing, piano, lots of KZbin 😂 (educational). If it’s playing in the background they learn while playing. Khan Academy has apps. It’s common core but I need a break 🫠. Please 😂. I don’t mind reading but with storm migraines I’m blind.
