I'm in NWArkansas, USA, and my experience with peppers has always been they make a few throughout the summer, then kick into high gear for a fantastic finish! But, 2 years ago, I was blessed to have the final show all summer long. So if yours arent doing well now, hang on. They may show out in a couple of months. This past summer, I had some chicken manure in my beds that did not get composted well enough. Eveything I planted in those beds curled. I had to replace several. It killed me bc I had grown them myself. So I had to buy plants to replace. They were still absolutely pathetic and leaves curled as well. But they turned it on at the end and I had a huge harvest in August and September.

Growing Chillies in Texas we always see the most growth in the hottest months. This last year the cool Spring weather lasted longer than other years which the Chillies did not appreciate very much! Their growth was slow until July. At that time they showed only a bit of growth. By the time the middle of August was here they were growing like gangbusters! This sudden surge of growth needs lots of fertilizers that are ready & available to the plants. Peppers are heavy feeders. While Chillies will grow in poor soils, they thrive in rich heavily composted soils that have good drainage. Some years we have to provide direct overhead shade because the sun is so strong. The shade is only provided during the very hottest weeks, and direct sun is still shining on the sides of the plants. We grow organically, and always make sure to use animal waste that has been fully composted. Chicken manure can burn the roots if used directly - ie; without it being composted first. It's just best to compost all the manures before applying them as soil ammendment- in my opinion. Oh! One more thing - Chillies like to be crowded. They're very neighborly to each other! Plant them close together & while you'll end up with a great big crowded row of bushes, they will be happy bushes! Hope that helps! ♡

I am working on such a video this season yes. Insects will often target poor growing plants and whitefly tend to like crowded humid and enclosed environments (especially greenhouses) so perhaps try giving the plants some more fertiliser with a dose of trace elements, thin them out slightly so they have more airflow, and use an eco-fungicide or copper spray to keep leaf disease in check. See how you go and all the best :)

Hiya! I wondered if you sow seeds staggering the planting to stagger the harvest, as the back of seed packets suggest? I thought you might have some insight into which crops can hang out longer before harvesting, and which ones really need to be harvested all at once if planted all at once? I hope this makes sense! Thanks mate!

Came here to say this too. Anaheim, the city in California, sounds like ana-rhyme. One more thing is kinda funny if you're interested in word spelling around the world. Here in the United States when the things you're planting are written in the plural form, it looks the same as what y'all in Australia have written on that plant tag = Chillies. But written in the singular form, only one L is used = Chili Why? Who knows?!!! The English language! It can be soooo confusing!! And WHY DO THEY call them Chillies anyway???! Maybe it's like when you name something the opposite of what it is? Just like when you have a very large friend called "Tiny Tim"? Tiny Tim... Does anybody remember Tiny Tim!?! Not sure what made me think of THAT person! I was only a kid when he had his 15 minutes of fame! What a weird blast from the past to jump into my brain!! And what does Tiny Tim have to do with Chillies anyway??!!! sheesh...

You're right, those aren't Anaheim (pronounced "Anna Hyme") chilis. I live not too far from Anaheim and grow that type of chili regularly; they're very large peppers.

We once had a dog who found one cat that he played with like a chew toy. The cat never ran away, just accepted being rolled around, chewed on, and tossed. We lived on a farm and it was an outside cat. Animals are strange sometimes!

chili peppers are named after the country of origin where they were first discovered by the Spanish in the early 1600s namely chile. the original Chilean wild peppers are small about the size and shape of a small cherry tomato they are very sweet and very hot if you go there you will see the native children eat them like candy, so heat in food really starts in the crib in chile!

Hi Mark. Drakes can kill chickens if they mate with them as they have a penis which damages the hens cloaca if they breed with them. Roosters don't have this "arrangement". So I'd say this may have been the cause of your poor hens demise. I have a good friend here who lost a hen last year to his drakes over amorousness. Anahem is pronounce Ann-a-high-m.

May I recommend 'Turtle Claw' Chillies by 'Sea Spring Seeds' of Dorset over here in England. It is by far and above my favourite chilli, and is also highly prolific. (I grow about 50-60 plants of about 30 different varieties each year and they always come out on top). I'm more than happy to send you some seeds for next year if you know of a legal way, alternatively speak to them directly. They're extremely helpful and friendly.

I remember my older brother & I using about 5 packs of double happies in the hinge of dads tool shed door. Blew one of the two hinges right off.... And the boot up the a$$ that night was seriously worth it 🤣. But the idiots throwing them at animals & people stuffed that fun up.

The word Anaheim, at least here in Texas, rhymes with PANTOMIME. You are correct that it is a city in California. Whether the fruit was named for the city, I'm not sure, but I would bet they were developed at a university in Anaheim. Secondly, the word jalapeño is the name of the fruit you planted. Since I live so near Mexico we pick up a little of the language. The little squiggly line above the N is called a tilde (TEEL day), also a Spanish word. The tilde changes the sound of the N to more of a NYUH, so the word JALAPEÑO is pronounced "ha la PEN yo." To be clear, the E in the third syllable is a short E, as in an ink pen. I'm not very good at creating a dictionary entry, but I sure hope that helped you. Don't feel bad: many people here in Texas still say jalapeño wrong. Perhaps I paid closer attention than some because I love jalapeños so much. I love all your work, Mark, but I particularly enjoyed this one. One final note: I am the same guy that texted you last year telling you that I am a terminal cancer patient and wanted to express my gratitude for all the joy I have experienced from your work. You and I texted back and forth a couple of times, and the outpouring of love I got from you and so many of your followers was overwhelming. My doctors had predicted I would be dead last April. To my surprise, and to the disdain of some (who assume I must have been faking my illness? ...), I'm still here with you for now. You can be sure I am more surprised by my current state of survival than anyone. I can't walk or get out of bed anymore, but I'm still enjoying your videos. I love you, Mark. You are a good man. I'm sorry, but I have to add this: As of yesterday, 11-7-2020, the good folks of the USA voted our fascist dictator out of office! Our new president will take over our government in January. I am so grateful I got to see this unprecedented piece of history before I go.

Anaheim (an + uh + hym) chiles do grow larger and are on the milder side. The have slightly more kick than bell peppers so they can still be used in salsas and are great cooked down with onions and garlic. The size and heat make them perfect for stuffing and are the go-to pepper for chiles rellenos. In America they are also knows as hatch peppers or New Mexico chiles which is actually where they originated from. They were brought to California in the late 1800s by the founder of the Ortega brand of Mexican products, Emilio Ortega.
