How I Play Nintendo GameCube on Modern TVs

The Nintendo Direct didn't have some of the games that I wanted to play on the Nintendo Switch and through Nintendo Switch Online. Instead of waiting for games to pop up on NSO, I decided to play some of my favorite GameCube games on the original hardware. With the help of the Retrotink 5X and some great cables from Retrobit, I was able to relive some of my favorite childhood memories and wanted to share how I did it. Hope you all enjoy the video!

A good choice between the 2x mini and the 5x is the 2x pro. Basically a 2x mini with a component input. The 5x upscaling isn't really that big of a deal for me cuz its still really just outputting 480p, so the upscaling is really just to get modern tvs to recognize the signal, but guess it depends on what you care about

An opinion a year later, but honestly for me the best way to hookup a gamcube, or mostly any older console is through an HDMI internal mod, it's expensive, requires soldering skills, but you get a clean picture because it doesn't go through the DAC (Digital/Analog Converter) and therefore you don't have to digitalize it again, so no noise, no artifacts, no visual aberrations, clean digital picture directly with no middle mans, some of these mods also work as upscalers and deinterlacers (like the RetroGEM from PixelFX for the N64, PS1 and PS2), others simply output a 480p or 240p depending on the console. In terms of cost i honestly see it way more worth it than investing in tools like Retrotinks or OSSC's, it's a do once keep it forever mod that removes SO MUCH clutter from your setup, and all in all you're gonna end up paying more or less the same, because not only you have to get one of those devices, you'll also have to get "premium quality" cables, sometimes adapters, and at the end of the day you're gonna have an spaghetti monster of 200$+ per console you wanna hookup. With this method you're gonna end up with 100 to a 150$ per modchip/console, but then the rest of the cost is simply a 5$ HDMI cable, and you'll have a better picture quality. For the gamecube and wii in specific the best way to get a clean digital image is simply use a WiiU with CFW to play those games, install Nintendont and use it to run the legally ripped ISO's. Of course that's only valid if you are set on using a digital TV, if you have something like a Trinitron or a Quintrix CRT TV, get high quality Component or Composite cables and forget about all this, these consoles and their games where made with CRT's in mind, specially the older you go, you'll find that some effects or other art related stuff might not look like the OG CRT look because LCD works completely different from a CRT, and mane games took advantage of how CRT's worked to accomplish a lot of technical details.

I prefer a CRT TV for Retroconsoles. You can find tons of them and the people just give them away without costs. Old Games just look so much better on them as on a pricey OLED TV with a expensive upscaler.
@baldlyrudy
@baldlyrudy Жыл бұрын
Locally, I've had a hard time finding a CRT TV. Sometimes I randomly pop into thrift shops to see what they have, but all I usually find are old LCDs. I agree that that's the best way to play with these consoles, BTW. Nothing replaces that experience.

Cheapest option is buying a Wii and a $10 hdmi adapter. Wii goes for around $50. You won’t have to deal with converting analog to digital since the signal will be digital. You’ll also be able to mod the Wii to play backups and add support for a variety of controllers
@baldlyrudy
@baldlyrudy Жыл бұрын
You're definitely right that that's a cheap way to go about it. The only drawback is that you'll be stuck at 480 resolution. Playing on a 4K TV makes that 480 feed ridiculously fuzzy, hence the need for an upscaler. If you don't care for the quality of the feed, then going with a Wii and HDMI Adapter is definitely the cheap way to go about it.

I got the last Indigo in town back when it launched. Unfortunately that lens stopped working. Fortunately I was able to score a working silver one. I was one of the few people who splurged on getting an official nintendo component cable shipped back in the day. I just use that and have been using the cube as a gameboy player to minimize lens use. I use a wii with component cable if i want to play gamecube games. the tv is a 4k set and seems to try its best no matter the input, but it struggles with vhs. maybe i should look into an upscaler for that.

Yeah man. Try giving it a go. Also, for the lens, see if you can find a replacement for it. I just changed the lens to my PS2 (it couldn't play PS2 games at all) during a stream on Twitch. It's was super easy to do, but required me soldering off some safety feature on the lens that's needed to be removed before use. Aside from that, everything else was just screws and a ribbon wire.

Yo! The audio goes through the HDMI, so if you don't have anything then it may not work. @z25drock dang. Sorry to hear that. An upscaler would help get a crisp output from the GameCube.

Yeah. The Steam Deck is a fully dedicated handheld. Honestly, I like the integration with my Steam Library and the option to have ROMs ready to go. Phone tech is ridiculously crazy though.

Don't forget that you need a TV that has analog inputs to play the GameCube on. Most modern televisions don't even have RCA. Add the lag if they do and you'll understand why something like this is awesome.
