Thank you. Do you have an idea of when to shear sheep base on the temperature outside? When it starts getting hot.

Temperature isn't really an issue especially for blade shearing so long as it's not right before a cold storm. Also wool is insulative so you don't need to shear to keep the sheep cool it's more to stop flystrike and to stop the fleece getting to long and heavy. Normally it's best 6weeks before lambing or at least 6weeks after lambing.

I've sheared from temperatures of -15F to 110F. I've sheared all winter long here. The key is the sheep having shelter when its cold so the frost dont set on them. The frost setting on them at night on their backs is what makes them sick. Some breeds of sheep can get sick from snow sitting on their back like lincolns where if you were to shear them, they wouldn't stand outside in the snow and die, they would go inside and get out of the frost/snow.

I'll chime in just to second what Alan said that sheep don't necessarily get "cool" by having their wool off because they don't sweat like humans. In extreme heat with limited shade, shearing can sometimes be worse than leaving the wool on because the wool creates a thermal-neutral zone next to their skin.

I really need to learn to suck less at blades. Just not really any good customers to practice here. And not really anyone to get instruction from.
