To get rid of ants, sprinkle food grade diatomaceous earth on the top of the soil and if in containers, sprinkle around the bottom. Reapply if the powder gets wet. Wear a mask and gloves because although you can eat this stuff, you should avoid breathing it. Avoid ladybugs too

Yes. Citrus too. “Use citrus, like lemons, oranges, or grapefruit and harnesses the power of d-limonene - the acidic oil found in the peels. This oil is toxic to ants” I used cinnamon and citrus when I had my problem and then all of a sudden I didn’t have that problem anymore.

Ohio River Valley here. We like the 2nd to 3rd week of April. I've found a good rule of thumb is to try to target the week the yellow head of the Dandelions start emerging in your yard. Aim to have them in the ground that week. Long stored seed from last year are started chitting a month-ish prior. Newer potatoes that are still quite dormant need between 2 and 3 months to break dormancy and sprout new chits. ALSO : Apical Dominance is a thing (the tendency for sprouting to be limited to the tops). If you want to maximize chits for cutting into more seeds, break off the cluster at the top. They'll then start producing new chits from all the eyes all over the tuber - as well as re-growing the one you broke off. Grocery store 'Taters have never been an issue here. 22 years growing and most of ours started from the Kroger Produce aisle. We save our own most years, but like to start with fresh, new seed every 5 or 6 years. 400-ish pounds a year harvested.

I agree with Joan, 400 pounds of potatoes is awesome! If I get 10 or 20 I'll be happy lol. I'll can every one of them after I make a 4th of July pot with fresh green beans. I know that I need to plant those by April 28th in order to get a mess for our cookout. My youngest daughter has a birthday on July 3rd, so we just celebrate it altogether on the 4th. I wish all of us luck this year on our gardens because last year's weather was sooo mixed up! 🙏👍

Awesome tips on when to plant them. I always heard to plant around St Patty's day but our last frost is a month away from that. I like your recommendation based on dandelion growth. I'm gonna try this this year.
@SgtSnausages Жыл бұрын
@@Enchanted_Daisy St. Pat's day has dramatically different weather/seasonal variation depending on your location on this giant globe. . We're still 60-ish days away from our last frost on Green Beer Day. Waaaay too early. If St. Pat's works reliable in your area, use it ... but most of the world can't. The Dandelions have evolved to emerge at just the right conditions in most of the Northern Hemisphere. A few light weeks of random overnight frost with warming soils. Gives the potatoes a few weeks to warm up and emerge into frost-free conditions. Probably Southern Hemisphere, too, but I've never been there.

Similar to essential oils, there are several herbs and spices that can be used to deter ants. Powdered cinnamon, cloves, garlic, cayenne pepper, black pepper, mint, and bay leaves all have the ability to repel ants as they work their way into your home. Sprinkle some around entrance points to keep ants away.

Potatoes 🥔 Buckets🙋♂️ I went to my local landscaping contractor last summer and asked if I can have some or as many 5 gallon plant buckets 🪣 they said I could take all I want from the location next to the dumpster. I took 40 buckets and doubled them up /staggered the drain holes and filled with my 50/50 compost. I left a few from last fall in the garden and they survived the winter freeze and numerous cold days. Without trying I have potatoes 🥔 sprouting already after a good week or two of 60s and sunny days. I live on a cement slab. I keep my potatoes under the steps in my house cardboard boxes with the potential eyes facing up with a small desk type fan pushing/ circling air. I just on Friday planted some of the potatoes in some of the buckets 🪣 for an early start. In April I’ll plant three rows like I did last year to have potatoes available at different times. ❤🎉 one of the easiest things to grow along with squash. I am going to start those seeds next week in a small planter and see what happens. It’s 3rd grade science class Al over again. Excited to see what happens along with what my hens produce in peak season. Changed of the layer feed a month ago and I am now getting eggs on a regular basis where before it was one every 7-10 days from three hens . Now it 2-3 eggs every other day. Again excited to see what next

The next day they were gone & I never saw ants again in them! It’s cheap & don’t cost a lot. May have to do it more often outside but still. Maybe sprinkle 1tsp to 1Tbls per plant & water in. It’d be worth a try for a whole crop of potatoes! Good luck & God Bless. You might could just mix some in a sprayer & spray the ground around the troubled plants. I’ve heard to mix cornmeal too. I always plant potatoes but you are so right if they are small don't cut them in half I did that once trying to get more potatoes. I had hardly any potatoes and if I did they were so small wasn't worth digging them up. I just left them in and they came back the following year which I didn't know they did that. But again they were smaller than a egg so I cleaned them and cooked them with skin on. But then the following year I cut the large ones in half but I planted them right away and lost half of them. I learned from you to let them dry on the cut. So thanks for explaining that cause after that year I planted everything whole. Last year it was a experiment I planted them in large containers and added dirt on top as they grew. After top dried off I dumped buckets out and got a great bunch of potatoes. Any dirt left over I placed on the part of my garden that I put my garlic in. This year at this time I have garlic a couple of inches up and they look hardy. You recommended to put leaves on the bed and I did so. Thank you very much for your info.

Last year I used cayenne pepper to keep bugs and ants off of my potatoes and tomatoes. A friend also had me pour cheep beer into an aluminum mini pie pan and place randomly around my squash and zucchini. It draws those pesky squash bugs and tomato worms to it and they leave your plants alone. It worked so well that I will be doing this again this year. Love your show!!! Thanks for all of the tips!!!
