I LOVE this video because it perfectly describes the internal struggles of breeders who actually care about their animals. It’s such a nice thing to see, because it’s not very common in the hobby. this is great advice. I have many of my corn snakes coming into breeding age next year and it will be my first time breeding snakes, and I may have the opportunity to breed a world's first even. I really don't know how well I am going to be able to sell my snakes. I have been making great connections for the last 2 years, and have started building that reputation. Mostly I am hoping that I can show that my snakes are stronger and healthier then most others.

As a breeder of high quality pine island chahoua, this is really a good take and how I tend to price. It's hard with shifting markets though to really be sure though that my prices make sense in either direction! And I would always be annoyed at somebody flipping my animal immediately, because I feel like they just went through a hardship of being shipped, and then there is quarantine not being respected, etc. Less for the money aspect and more because I would feel like I did my best to vet a person's ability to care for the animal and then they turned around and got rid of it immediately.

I see this topic on other channels. People don't realize the expenses that breeders have. Food, shelter, heating, vet bills, time and labor. Electricity rates have nearly doubled in the last 2 years. If you house a bunch of snakes your electric bill will be through the roof. I see prices and say wow that's high but I understand. I bought a common Boa because he is in my price range. He is super cute, a little shy but I wouldn't trade him for anything. If you want to pay $$$$$ for a designer snake, that's cool too.

Great video and topic! Last year was my first time producing and selling animals with genetic combinations that had never been posted on MM before. Pricing was difficult but my approach is much the same as yours, and I sold everything except one I gave more of a "holdback price" that I'm happy to watch grow a little longer, and when she's bigger her price will be too lol. When I first got into hobby breeding I did not understand the full value of my animals and definitely made some mistakes. Quality animals = premium pricing!

Well to be fair and I'm a hobby ist. And for now I just have my 1 year and 7weeks old male Aberrant 66%het albino California Kingsnake. But he saved my life in a way (I was an addict and because off knowing I would get him I just quit) also I never find such a friendly, not scared at all kingsnake anymore. He's the friendliest snake there is. He NEVER musked on me or bit me. Even if someone says I give you all the money in world I still won't sell him. He saved my life, and I'm so grateful that I give him the best life ever! Also the bond we share is priceless. You can't put money on love. And I love this dude with whole my heart! I stand on a list for a black head python male too. And it has to be a baby. But it can take to damn 2 years. And it's in dollars like 1300 dollars I think. Here in western Europe they became common the last few years. Like 5 years ago it was like 3500 dollars.. It's just they are easy to get here now but I want one from this breeder particularly. And I have time. I recently bought a custom made wooden enclosure that was not cheap because its edited or how say it that it will never mold. Also UVB and damn everything you can imagine with it and was more than 1000 euros. But he deserves it. It's a fantastic enclosure! It will keep the heat in much better than glass enclosures. Also I let it made in the Netherlands and I live in Belgium. It's 120cm×50cm×50cm.

What if you've only been breeding a couple years. I feel like most people are hesitant to pay the going price of animals if you don't have a reputation one way or the other. There are so many scammers out there, it makes it really hard to find customers. So I feel like if I offer them a lower price for a high quality animal it might ease their worries a little. But, the undercutting the market is a big deal, as you can hurt other breeders by doing so. Thanks for the video, really valid points and valuable information. ✌️
@JasonsExoticReptiles3 жыл бұрын
It’s hard. This is why I always recommend new breeders start with cheaper base morphs to burials the reputation. Once they have a name, they get the trust. It’s very difficult to seek high end animals with little reputation, even if you undercut the price
@MassConstrictors3 жыл бұрын
I know exactly what you mean I started producing babies in 2016 But I’ve kept boas for ova 20 years. And honestly from my first four seasons I had trouble getting a fair market value for my animals you are correct if you don’t have a name or a big KZbin following or just have been breeding for 20+ years And everyone knows you example like a vin russo You do have trouble getting a fair price it wasn’t until literally this past season I started to get a fair price for most of my babies because I’m just now starting to build a reputation and also a lot of people go off of your morph market if you don’t have a good reputation on Morph market With good reviews people don’t want to deal with you so it’s definitely tough out there

Hey Jason hope ur doin good. I have a question that is somewhat related to this topic. I was interested in getting an all black boa. I know there’s different combinations of IMG that get you there. Most popular seems to be the black devils, IMG BEA RDR as I’m sure you know, but they’re super expensive. I’ve seen postings of baby anery IMG boas for much less but I guess my question is does that mean it’ll get all black with the anery and IMG but not have the black eyes cuz it’s not BEA or how does that go? Also do you have IMG boas for sale ever? Thanks brotha
@JasonsExoticReptiles3 жыл бұрын
If you’re looking for a dark boa. See if you can See pictures of the parents. I have found that IMGs will get darker or lighter depending on the parents. Dark parents will usually produce dark babies. Unfortunately, they are just expensive. There shouldn’t be a huge difference between the Anerythristic IMG vs a BEA IMG. If you are dropping that kind of money, the breeder should be okay with showing you pics of the adults

When shopping for any animal not just reptiles the buyers should be thinking hey they had to purchase their pairs to breed, feeding bills, husband, and all the necessary accessories , incubator , caging, cleaning supplies , and much more it’s a lot of time and love . Oh I have no complaints; that’s the society we live in, capitalism so if I want to sell my snake at whatever price it’s my doing (albeit anything unreasonable will probably just go unsold anyway) I have a signed Darth Vader helmet, signed by James Earl Jones, made out to me, which is (I guess) a rarity. I was chatting with people about it online and I said sure I’ll sell it, said I want $100,000 jokingly. Low and behold later on someone saw the comment and contacts me asking if I still had it. (You see it was written out to me (my first name) and yes I have the proof needed for authenticity. . But to a true Star Wars fan with the same name i have, and them lotsa money to burn, $100K apparently isn’t unreasonable for the helmet. I thought how ridiculous, all that money for a darth Vader helmet signed by JEJ, but fact is if I wanted to sell it for 100K and I had a buyer, there is nothing immoral or illegal about it. It’s may be ridiculous of an asking price but it isn’t illegal. Just look at some of the dumb things that go to auction for insane prices.

So how do you know ?
@JasonsExoticReptiles3 жыл бұрын
That’s really a decision and a risk the buyer needs to take. I personally stick with my few trusted breeders. I always tell new breeders to breed animals that are basic, cheaper animals. Build a reputation off of the smaller dollar stuff before you jump into the 1k+ animals. People will take risks on a snake that is a few hundred. A few thousand is a different story. I personally would never drop that kind of cash with someone with little to no reputation

Pure bcc are also much harder to breed and the stock is usually from Wild caught animals with don’t really thrive. Myself and a few others do breed them but the prices are also higher for the reasons mentioned above. It just takes a lot more skill and time to establish a breeding group of pure BCc

I’d like to think that if people saw them in person after they buy them they are blown away versus the picture they bought it from. I know a lot of people out there edit their photos which leads to disappointment upon arrival. I’m not saying that’s the every day thing but I feel that I know what my animals are worth and I also semi-feel responsible for setting the market price for others. I tell Kevin at NERD all the time as well that he sets the bar. If he prices something for $1000, unless somebody has an incredible animal that Blows his away, people will price out $1000 and under.
