I vote a new option! Fish tanks. I have three fish tanks and plant clips where I put all my cuttings. The fish tank maintenance isn’t easy but it is the easiest way to prop my plants, they grow roots in no time and they can stay in there forever without me having to remember to refill/rinse their water cups! I’ve got a beautiful tiger’s tooth that’s grown three new leaves since I got her a month and a half ago! I’m still new to plants, and your videos have been so helpful in my plant care, thank you!

Man, I was literally typing out the same comment. I personally just fully grow my plants in my tanks.

I almost exclusively use stratum and perlite for propagation! I love using it for hoyas, it promotes root growth like crazy so it makes it very easy to root in a container the size of the pot and the hoya will be rootbound when repotting (I also leave the stratum on the roots and mix it into my chunky mix)

Water for me. I am trying rooting hormone for the first time with a new propagation.

I used to always do all water but lately I just toss it in perlite, bark, soil, moss mixture making sure there is lots of air in there with the perlite for the roots to breathe and it works well

I am a lazy plant mom. So water propagation works better for me. I never worried about forgetting to water them. Once the roots formed, sometimes I don't have the time or will to transfer it to a pot immediately. So it got left in the water until I can make some time for it. I have a jar of monstera cuttings in water that works as decoration as well as constant propagator on top of the center table in my living room.

I decided to give air layering a shot and so far, I’m seeing great root growth before cutting

I've been enjoying using vermiculite for propagations lately. Don't have to add water as often with soil which is my default.

I normally propaged in water. But if I have a tricky one, I lately used Fluval Stratum. I wash it, like I did with perlite before, so the black stain is almost no issue 😊

I freaking love direct propagation in the final medium, way less stress that the roots you already spent months waiting to grow out won't just die and put you back at square one. Important to keep humidity high though and definitely takes some practice. Probably not a beginner's best option

I either use straight water or water with leca in the container if I need to support the cutting. I know some people will use perlite for the same reason, but leca is easier for me to see root growth in.

I've just transferred my first propagations from perlite only. I really like how the root structure formed, the pothos cuttings aren't drooping over like they usually do when I transfer directly from water. I've also just used rooting hormone and soil for some dracaena heads I decapitated from some suffering stalks. I'm excited to see the results, since I've never rooted something so woody.

Water every time unless a specific plant doesn't like it, like my string of turtles, certain hoyas and my begonia rex (they preferred soil)

A great substitute for Fluval Stratum is aquarium substrate. It's chunkier so better airflow, it doesn't dry out as fast and it doesn't disintegrate so fast

Mine is using the same substrate they’ll live in. I’ve found that it’s fairly easy with pon.

I would rather root everything in Pon since it’s what most of my plants are potted in. Pon propagation can be hit or miss for me though.😅

I use eco complete instead of fluval and it doesn't have all the dark dust that covers everything. My favorite way to propagate is to put them in my aquariums (so nitrate filled water).

I'm transitioning to using perlite, after using water for a long time. I will still use water likely for cuttings that take a long time already like snake plants, but I've had so many issues with water rotting the end even when it calluses, and much less issues when I use perlite. I've also used leca on occasion

Water for me. I'll dip my cuttings in honey to stimulate root growth and prevent rotting. It's so easy, and I can see everything that's going on with the roots. I did successfully propagate a cactus in soil, and I'm trying now with Aloe Vera. I say propagate, but I mean: desperately trying to save from root rot.😅

A stratum pumice mix is my preferred method. Roots grow much faster than any other method and transition seamlessly to soil or semi hydro workout any shock.

I like pon or leca but with the water level high enough to touch the plant stems. As the roots grow I just let the water evaporate and the plant acclimates well. No need to transfer the plant.

Currently using bonsai grit for semi hydro leca on the bottom. Rocks hold everything in place and provide oxygen. I find stuff roots in course sand fast too. The roots aren't fine like regular water roots. They tend to be vigorous and transplant easy.

Water for life. Can’t underwater it, can’t over water it. Don’t have to worry about any of that stuff. Just have to give it liquid fertilizer once a month.
