SUMMARY NOTES - The Essay Memorisation Framework: 00:34 GENERAL OVERVIEW *There are two stages to the method: creation and memorization. *In the creation stage, the objective is to create first class essay plans for every conceivable essay title. *In the memorization stage, we commit all of these essay plans to memory by using active recall space, repetition, spider diagrams, and flashcards. *By the time the exam rolls around, we will have memorized so many essay plans that a lot of them will come up in the exam anyway. *Even if stuff comes up that we haven't memorized, we'll know so much about the subject and we'll have so many content blocks in our head that we'll be able to generate a first class essay from scratch. 01:23 THE CREATION STAGE *The objective of the creation stage is to create a large number of good essay plans that can be memorized and used during an exam. 01:49 - Deciding what essays to plan *The best way to decide which essays to prepare for an exam is to look at past papers and see which topics have come up previously. *If you don't have access to past papers, try to think from the perspective of the examiner and anticipate what sort of topics they might ask about. *You can also ask your teacher or professor for guidance on what sorts of essays might be covered in the exam. 02:30 - How to plan the essays *Start with a question, gathering information from Google, and then looking at lecture notes and recommended readings *Create a research document for each essay topic, which you then use to plan and write the essay. *This method results in more original essays than your peers, who mostly relied on lecture notes. *Only give yourself one day to complete each essay, in order to avoid work expanding to fill the time allocated. 05:08- How to make the essay plan really good *The introduction is the most important part of the essay. *Good essay plans have three key elements: structure, answering the question, and having a bit of flare. 08:09 THE MEMORISATION STAGE *The goal of the memorization stage is to upload all of the essay plans to our brain so that we can regurgitate them in the exam. *We will achieve this goal using three techniques: Anki flashcards, spider diagrams, and a retrospective revision timetable. 08:36 - Anki flashcards to memorise content blocks *Anki flashcards can help you memorize content blocks for your essays. *Putting keywords and content onto the cards can help you remember information for specific essays, as well as general essay topics. *Repetition is key for memorizing the information on the cards. 09:55 - Spider diagrams to memorise entire essays *The memorization stage of the essay memorization framework involves spider diagrams. *Ali writes out content blocks from essays using flashcards, and then puts the keywords onto a spider diagram. *This allows him to easily recall the information when writing his essay. * Do this regularly in the lead up to exams so that you are well prepared. 12:49 - The Retrospective Revision Timetable to systematically use active recall and spaced repetition *The Retrospective Revision Timetable is a system to use active recall and spaced repetition to memorize material. *The system uses a color-coding system to track how well you know the material. *Ali details the system in a video. 14:13 WRAPPING UP *Ali won a prize for best exam performance at Cambridge University. *He attributes his success to using a methodical and systematic approach to revision, which he calls the "Essay Memorisation Framework". *This method involves breaking down essays into smaller chunks, memorising them, and then recalling them under exam conditions.

Honestly, most people would just keep a lot of these things (that helped them ranked first, win prizes or even achieve great success to themselves and they're afraid that if they share with anyone, there will be more competitions in the future, all in all most people are selfish in one way or another), but you instead share and educated people ways they can achieve success in life. Raised by good parents that expect results, firm but allowing for freedom of technique so that the son has his own vision that is applied for himself, a philosophy that works by hard work first, then constant improvement by effort, never cheating, zero procrastination, trying and failing, but having another go. Not plagiarising by twisting google language to fit! Application of systematic atomic improvements after reading THIS BOOK:- ----> *"Tiny Changes, Remarkable Results - Atomic Habits by James Clear".* also ... *ANKI, Buzan diagrams, used, which takes effort to use. This guy has his his own theory of mind, his own mind (memory) and how it works, then tricks himself to succeed. So he understands how to remember not just by tricks, but by the theory applied to himself in his own exams. A kind of effect of seeing yourself in mirrors facing each other - infinity!* Also, raised *not* like "Achmed the Dead Terrorist" and *not* like "Achmed the Dead Terrorist has a Son". @@Saad-rf6ge This is completely hypothetical. Where is the proof of this? I don't care how intelligent you are, you're not going to score 98/100 if you barely study. UNLESS 'A' really really paid attention in class and gave his 100% during his school hours. But even then it's extremely unlikely that he's going to score more than 'B'. The reason for that is because school is not designed to reward intelligence. It's designed to reward memory. You don't need a high intelligence to memorize all the answers or prepare for an exam (An exam where you already know what to expect in terms of the topics that you will be questioned on). Furthermore, if you're intelligent but do not prepare for the exam, you're still going to perform very poorly. Getting a high/low score on an exam has little to do with intelligence. If you don't believe me, show me an intelligent person who doesn't prepare well for an exam and still aces it. It just doesn't happen
@alfiecollins56174 жыл бұрын
Essay memorisation has proved an extremely effective exam technique for me. Having huge banks of stored words is so useful because the information can be retrieved so rapidly. Trying to think up an answer on the fly is much harder (in many ways it requires greater intelligence, although it's a much dumber technique). It is also very reassuring because you *know* that the memorised essays are first-class (either because you've received feedback from them, or because you've spend so long on them prior to the exam that they can't be anything but the highest quality). In contrast, trying to think on the spot in an exam does not offer the same guarantee of quality. Although it's impossible to prepare for every possible question, there can never be that many *types* of question, and there's no reason why words can't be pooled from different memorised essays to form a new answer to the specific question that appears in the exam. It's so effective that it almost seems like cheating, except for the fact that the only person you're plagiarising is yourself.
@letsdomath17504 жыл бұрын
Essay memorization is fine, but thinking up answers on the fly is a skill that you also want to develop, and it requires less net work. Also, lol, I was once tempted to submit the same exact essay for my Molecular Cell Biology and Anatomy and Physiology classes. They were a year apart and were taught by different instructors in the department. I think I ended up using a different topic to avoid any plagiarism check nonsense, but it would have been an easy A for that near duplicate assignment.

This is exactly the opposite of what being a genius or very intelligent entails. Memorisation can be done by parrots and you are not coming up with innovative ideas or tackling complex problems so the use of the word genius is really disingenuous here. For reference sake look at people like Newton, Einstein, Euler, Maxwell and how they revolutionised or established science through original thought not memorising things off a page. This is what's wrong with the education today, so much emphasis on pointless memorisation which can be easily outsourced to computers and google while there is no emphasis on conceptual understanding or original thought.

@@yt_nh9347 i had some collegues being in the range of 160+ IQs. All of them did not need to learn really, they just read the books once, maybe twice if at all, and then they aced the tests and their projects. Even the "normal" 130+ people had something similar going when it came to "learning". They never did actually need to work on anything in the same way, we normal people need to. So no, it is not far off what i wrote initially as a joke. And don't compare old shool "geniuses" like Einstein or Euler (which have been attributed to be in the 150+ IQ range, depending on source), as you are trying to compare apples and peaches here. Whole different story nowadays and back then. But i do agree on the current educational system and the need to improve for more emphasis on critical and creative thinking. :)

I always did this and hoped for the best. But it's só un-effincient I do still make notes so I can find information easy but the rereading is all gone! You gave a really interesting vision in how to study so organised, looking up information, filtering this, categorising it and make flashcards. Fun to see that this is pretty exactly the same strategy I came to over the years (and which turned out to be highly successfull). One more tip: You should always start memorizing the topics the day after you have summarized them. So you summarize topic A on day 1, then on day 2 you start memorizing topic A and summarize topic B, on day 3 you start memorizing topic B and summarize C, etc. etc with spaced repitition.

I’ve been to Cambridge too, and indeed there are two ways of getting a first: either you are tremendously intelligent and original and have a great memory, which you have trained in years and years of tough studies before uni, in which case you just focus on the subject and you don’t need to waste time planning and memorising essays like crazy (there are very few students in this category, generally those who end up in academia), or you do what this guy does, i.e. plan and memorise in a very disciplined way essays that could come up in the exam (that’s what most people do).
