I will add that despite the film not always being accurate, especially in regards to his death, because it was later revealed that he was found after he had eaten breakfast and his lunch had been brought to him, when the nurse came to collect his lunch, he was found horizontally lying across his bed fully dressed, plus Joseph knew the risks of trying to sleep normally given his body, and he knew about God and Hell, so it’s now thankfully been revealed he didn’t commit suicide. They don’t know exactly what caused him to fall backwards like that - did he have a stroke or an aneurysm or a seizure, or did God just say “Your time is up.” I’m hoping he didn’t try to kill himself but even if he didn’t, either way, it makes me cry to think of what happened to the real Joseph Merrick and the soundtrack - just... brutally devastating. Every time they get to that point where Joseph recites the rest of the Psalm, I lose it. Especially more since my marriage because in some ways, my husband’s personality reminds me of Joseph and his favourite Psalm is Joseph’s - the 23rd Psalm. I still cry thinking of Joseph. I think it is fair to say that if only Joseph knew, he might be deeply honored that so many feel love, mourning, grief, compassion, sympathy, and who miss him. I hope in the afterlife (for those who believe), he is at peace and with his beloved mother, brother, and sister again and that he is happy and well. His tragedy is a good wake up call. If God ever blesses me with a son, I intend to name him after Joseph, in his memory. I even am in the process of getting a photograph replica of the real man, just so I can from time to time, think about him.
