Not to mention: that this all begs the question--why?--Isn't the goal to gain Knowledge or do some people just want to 'show off' and be loved, merely because they read X amount of books?
@hibak8196
@hibak8196 4 жыл бұрын
Allow me to disagree. My reading skills weren't that great when I started reading so I did skip some descriptions I found tedious and I still do sometimes. I can always go back and reread these things if 1) the book is worth it and 2) the info in it turns out to be important. It's always much more fun to be able to read without having to skip/skim stuff, but I'd rather read and build my skill gradually than feel bad about not understanding everything and getting bored or giving up. After doing some rereads, I agree it is a fuller experience as I said, but also skipping just didn't have that massive of an effect to take away the "actual finishing" of the book.

Understanding the difference between reading for pleasure and reading to learn is critical. When reading for pleasure you have the flexibility to read in almost any manner you like. If the book is bad or doesn’t connect with you don’t feel compelled to finish it. Move on to another book that resonates more with you. Additionally, I often read more than one book at a time as I think variety keeps me more engaged in the book I’m reading at that moment. Lastly, I do think it is important to keep in mind that books are another form of art. And great writers think carefully about every aspect of the book they write. This results in an intimate one sided street with the reader because the writer is sharing their personal story and perspective. Therefore, I think the important job of the reader is to respect this vision and give the book the moment it deserves. You don’t have to like the book or agree with the message but I think you can still respect it. I always try to keep that in mind as I read and I think it makes me a more appreciative and attentive reader. Just my long-winded 2 cents.

If you still want to "gamify" book reading by having a goal to read books/year, but agree with #2 point in this video, just count partial completions. 1/2 of one book and 1/2 of another count as reading a book. + there are genuinely lots of books where 90% of the insight is in the first 25-33% of the book anyway.

I can't do Kindles, I need to have a physical book in front of me. Skipping is dumb, especially when reading fiction. Maybe it's just the books that I read but if you skip anything then you can miss massive pieces of foreshadowing or setup for later in the book. The way to read more is to read more. Make time for it, develop your reading speed so you can read without losing comprehension. One final note is that if you're desperate to read more books then just read shorter ones In other words, read what's interesting to you, there's no silver bullet that'll make you magically read 100 books in a year. You have to give it time, and even then there are other factors such as book-length and the complexity of the writing

Some fantastic ideas in this video, brilliant and encouraging. Tips like "you don't have to finish a book" and "you don't have to read the classics" even though they are brilliant. Basically, read what you enjoy, find what you like. It reminded me of s book i read by Nancie Atwell who won the global teacher prize back in 2015 i think. She is a person driven to get children to become skilled, passionate, habitual, critical readers. Reading is a skill that takes time to develop. Ali is like Nancie Atwell, he's like a breath of fresh air. Keep making the great videos Ali

I really enjoyed this video for a lot of reasons. The editing, including the pop-up images and text as well as the transitions and sounds that they come on the screen with is all amazing. I also really enjoyed the content and sharing the idea about not feeling guilty for not finishing a book. That's something that I only internalized recently. As a side note, my Alexa perked up and said that she could not find an ice and fire mode. lmao

Very inspirational. My Kindle is usually (but not always) just collecting dust and I think I need to build it into my routine like you said. Before bed seems really good for me too. I grew up on the Wheel of Time series and absolutely love it. I hope you like it too. I will say that unfortunately you may want to just skip book 6 up until the last three books written by Brandon Sanderson. I really like Brandon Sanderson as an author in his own right and I was so happy when he took over the series after Robert Jordan's death. The reason why you should skip books 6 up until the last three are that the plot doesn't move forward at all. It's like Robert Jordan loved the series so much he didn't want to finish it.

@@carbonc6065 not everyone wants to read a certain amount of books just to show off. For me I want to read a lot of books every year just because I want to read a lot of books! There's so many good books out there (and in my living room) and I want to try and get to all of them. Having a number set in your head of how many books you want to read is a goal and motivation just like any goal. And why shouldn't you be proud if you hit your goal? And goodness knows I could careless how many books OTHER people read. I've never been in competition with other readers and I don't know any readers that are like that. Tip for anyone with an old iPad - convert it into a dedicated e-reader. I have reading apps on my main iPad, but can easily get distracted and I don’t even have social media apps on it. So I took my old iPad 2 and configured it a little bit. Now the only app on it is iBooks. It’s basically a kindle, but without the web browser, yet with the ability to purchase books on the device itself AND listen to audiobooks. Would highly recommend putting your old tech to use in this way.

There’s “reading” and then there’s active, deep reading. The reading of books that elevate the mind rather fill your head with facts, stories and figures. The point isn’t just to read more books but to read better books and read them actively. 50 shades of grey and Beyond Good and evil are both books but the latter is infinitely more valuable for your mind. It’ll do wonders for you.

Great points - I'd like to add KU. Kindle Unlimited is like Netflix for books. I got a 3-month free trial and then bought the year-long subscription on Amazon Prime Day when it was discounted so for about 8$ per month, I can read as many books as I like. It makes abandoning books I don't like much easier while also making it easier to dive into longer series. Another tip = I ride a stationary bike so I can read while I exercise. For the most part, I read fiction before bed and non-fiction on the bike. If I'm reading something compelling or a series I'm really into, that can change but on the whole, I've found it to be a nice way to balance out my day with exercising my mind and body at the same time. The suggestion in the video about using Audible to listen to audiobooks is a good way to "read" while you jog or whatever as well.

I CAN'T stop reading, i'm reading 24/7 i finish 200 chapters or even more in ONE DAY. Before, my parents wanted me to stop playing videogames and go out or read something, now they want me to stop reading and think that i'm crazy 😂😂😂 For me, reading is watching a movie with my imagination, i don't even have to think anymore as long as i read my brain builds the world for me. I think knowing that you can skip some parts in a book is really important, I have a habit of trying to count how much new things I've learned compared to how much I've read every time I finish a book, and I concluded that most of the times it wasn't enough compared to the time I spend reading and that's because sometimes even if we get the point that the author is talking about we continue reading all the examples or we see some concepts that are repeated in many books which we already know (this is always the case in self dev books) but we read them again just to say at the end that " I have read this book entirely "and not feel guilty to add it to your Goodreads account. i think from now on i ll try to skip some parts in non fiction books howerver in fiction books i m steal not okey with skipping because its like skipping part in movie once you strat doing this you cannot stop and for me i think its a bad habit.
