Last year, I decided I wanted to read more... specifically, I wanted to read 100 books. I spent a lot of time trying out different methods for becoming better at reading efficiently and proactively, and so I thought today I'd share what I learnt! This is how to read more, and how to make your 2020 New Year's resolution become a reality!!

Last year I set myself the challenge to read 52 books (a book a week) and at some point I was no longer doing it for pleasure but for the count instead.. in September I gave up on the challenge because I just couldn’t manage because of school and applying for uni and I managed to read about 6-7 books in the remaining months but I truly enjoyed them.. one of them was Wuthering Heights and I took my time with it, can’t tell u how magical it felt just slowly going through the pages.. and honestly giving up the challenge was a blessing in disguise because initially I felt like a failure but in the end I couldn’t be happier I’d made that decision.. this year I want to read all the books I have bought and still haven’t read which is about 40.. also i want to learn to let go of a book I don’t enjoy.. so we’ll see how that goes 🤷🏽‍♀️

Good tips, but some things to keep in mind: 1) The Goodreads Reading Challenge does help give you a feeling of making progress, but the app itself can be a distraction, like all social media. Instead of doing your own reading, now you're doing a lot of reading about what other people are reading. Not bad in itself, just in small doses, and if it does become a distraction, totally dispensable. 2) Audiobooks are essential, especially if you have a 9-5 with a commute. But I find my comprehension is about 60-75% what it would be with physical books where I control the pace of the reading. My mind tends to wander, and my attention is already divided between listening and driving or whatever else I'm doing at the time. 3) Maybe the overall number of books isn't the most important thing. My 2019 goal was 60, which I achieved, but my 2020 goal is only 45. I know I'm going to be reading some longer and more challenging works, and I'd be cheating myself by expecting to go through them at the same pace. Yeah, I could pad my total by reading a bunch of fluff, but what's the point of that? Ideally, quantity and quality should not compete. 4) There simply is no substitute for prioritizing reading and minimizing distractions. Usually this means TV, videogames, and social media.

There are another apps to track your reading and organize your reads thay are not a social media like goodreads. I dont use goodreads exactly because of that, it's too much information... I use a Brazilian app called "cabeceira", there are english books there too cause you can add any book you want, and you can just track your progress through the book you are reading and you challenge, the app also calculates how much time you need to finish that book and how much you need to read per day to achieve your goal... and it's not a community so you dont get distracted with other people reading life

Why rush at 1.5 speed just to fill a quota? Not only is it not fun, you don’t retain anything. So it’s basically just to say you read it, then 1 month later you can’t remember anything about the book. The point is knowledge, enjoyment etc you can’t quantify that.
@thecrazybookworm3086
@thecrazybookworm3086 4 жыл бұрын
@@alb0zfinest it depends a lot on what book it is. Some books are read slowly and I want to find out what happens next and so going faster is nice. Others I don't speed up much or at all for the reasons you gave. Some books narrators are not to my taste but the story or info is good so speeding it up helped me focus less on the audio and more on the book itself. I also ultimately to read physical books and so the books I read through audio are ones I want in the moment entertainment or info and so going fast doesn't really hinder my enjoyment. Thet are books I want to read, but I am ok with missing little bits. I read the maze runner series like that. I wanted something to entertain me while I working in the garden and going faster encouraged my work and since I didn't love the books I kinda wanted to plow through them. Its personal preference and since I often listen to them spread up normal speed can sound strange.

Yesssss reading out loud is so helpful! I often do it when I'm battling with a complex chapter in one of my philosophy books and really have to think about what I am reading. Sometimes it's the whole book ... XD

i got out of my reading slumps after years and I've always thought that I could never and should never read more than one book at a time. now, I find it ideal to read at least 2 books at once. whenever I want to take a break from the current book I'm reading, I'll pick up the other book. it really helps me with moving forward and getting through my books!!

I’m aiming to read 52 books this year. Managed to finish 50 in 2019. Goodreads is definitely such a helpful and motivational tool! I’ve been using it for years :) also, this year I want to read more books from my library and more for fun than for uni. Happy reading everyone!

I've been on Goodreads for a little over two years now and I can't express how much it has helped with my reading. I don't necessarily have high goals, just 12 books minimum, because of high-school and the amount of homework we have (my country is cruel, it's a lot. like 4 hours minimum after 7 hours of school plus a gym activity because heck why not?). I always love to see more people reading, books are an amazing thing

i read 6-8 books in 2018 (dont know for sure, didnt track it), didnt read anything outside of school in 2019, and finally got inspired to pick it back up in 2020 but only in august and only managed to read 1 book :/ my goal for this year is 12 books! one per month, maybe a little more maybe a little less but it's a hobby that i miss and love so much that i just want to feel that excitement of being in love with a page-turner again. thanks for the tips!!!

It's good to know that I am not alone when it comes to reading books aloud when no one else is about 😆. I think it helps with some books; not only is it a good way to get a feel for the characters, but the plot, information you are presented with sinks in better.

All of his advice rings so true. Especially the bit about reading multiple books at the same time. Sometimes you just get bored with the book you're reading, especially if you've been reading it for a long time.

Reading books of different genres at the same time is also quite easy. For ex. I almost always am reading a novel, a non-fiction, and a spiritual growth book. Yes, carrying a book around to read at random times is a great tip. I keep one in the car. Louis L’amour, in his fabulous autobiography Education of a Wandering Man wrote that one year, after getting tired of hearing friends complain that they just didn’t have time to read, he decided to do an experiment. He carried around a book everywhere for a year, only reading it while waiting - waiting for a train, waiting at the doctor’s, waiting in line, etc. He read 8 books that year simply while waiting! By the way, anyone who loves reading would love his book. It’s basically about his love affair with reading and what a huge part it played in the adventurous life he had. I’ve never read any of his westerns but this one was an absolute delight.
