I was born and raised in Napoli. Spent there the first 30 years of my life. For me, the cultural shock was moving to the American Suburbia. I miss so much of Napoli. I enjoy visiting my family and friends there, and re-discovering the places of my youth with a camera and my (amateur) photographer's eye. Thanks for this video, Omar. You really nailed the unique, out-of-your-comfort-zone, chaotic beauty of my hometown.

I also use aperture priority. My wife and I recently visited Paris. We had some bucket list items on our agenda, but I wish that I had more time to do street photography. Next time we go, I will take along a lightweight tripod and do some serious lowlight street photography.

Of the over 30 countries that I’ve backpacked through over the last 25 yrs, Naples is the first and only city where I was pickpocketed, but still I have fond memories for the raw amazing reality of Napoli. That was the 90s but still the impressions of Napoli are strong in me. Crazy amazing raw tough city. And you mention the scooters… I went home to my own country and bought a Vespa - somehow I wanted to create a little of that Naples life in my home city on the opposite side of the world.

Hi Omar. Great video. My wife and I have just got back from Sorrento in Italy yesterday . Had mad experience in Naples. On the train to Herculaneum, train broke down, everyone thrown off at a random stop, 35 degree heat. A train load of people going crazy as they needed to get to Naples airport with luggage. Got in a taxi to Naples after an hour completely overloaded with people and suitcases. Got dropped off 10min walk to the train station. The city greets you like a slap in the face Scooters zipping around with Jack Russell dogs in the foot well. I struggle to get my Jack Russell in the car! Crazy city and adventure getting there. Lucky we got the ferry back to Sorrento as no more trains that day. I had my Nikon z6ii and 24-200 but shot with my phone as honestly not sure if I would if robbed or not. Didn’t see any one else with cameras walking about. Can completely relate to your video!

Omar!!! I LOVED this video so much for so many reasons. In fact, this is my all time FAVORITE video you have ever made! First, your shots were fantastic!! Loved them all -including the video clips. You weaved the video and stills together perfectly and I love the simplicity of how you executed it. Also, I think you verbalized perfectly what I feel when I am in metropolitan cities in the world like Naples! I grow tired of typical street photography or typical touristy scenes. I love it when I am thrust in the middle of a storm... and then also have to tease out the repeating themes that you can focus on (pardon the pun!) like you did with the scooters. Lastly, about gear... I've mentioned before that I have abandoned the Ricoh GR for a few reasons but the main one is the lack of viewfinder. I do love so many things about the Ricoh but a viewfinder has now become a non-negotiable. I am experimenting now with micro four thirds systems, using the same settings I did with the Ricoh, and really enjoying the beauty of UBER LIGHT travel gear! Anyway, thanks for a great video and I do love that "what in the actual..." (WITAF) inspired you to create this :).

I loved how you capture the atmosphere of Naples and the impact it had on you. Now I want to go and visit it. As far as camera settings, I know it is easier if you are doing street photography to use aperture priority, but each time I try it, it never looks as good as yours, so I always change it to manual. This video made me get in the mood to try one more time to see if I can get it Thanks Omar! Thank you for teaching another way of capturing and preserving our holidays.

Whew, yeah, Naples is on a different level. We had several days there on a longer trip. On our last day we had to get and leave the hotel at 4 am for our flight out. We expected a quite predawn. Instead, the streets were still throbbing (yes, there’s that word again) with people still out from the night before.

I was recently in Naples and it was a beautiful experience. I think Omar summed up the sentiment very well. Coming from Brazil, which is quite violent, Naples proves to be a safe place, if you behave yourself without appearing to be a classic tourist. It's a place full of energy, vibrant, close to beautiful places... My Z6II + 40mm f2 with aperture priority almost all the time was a good setup to capture important moments.
@danielfontana8390 Жыл бұрын
It is important to always be attentive. When I took photographs, my wife always remained attentive. I had no problem taking out the camera, but carrying it around your neck all the time wouldn't be the best option. I have a discreet shoulder bag. Care is similar to any big city. Take photos, there are lots of cool things, but stay alert and enjoy.

I used my Z6II with the 24-70 f4 and the 40mm f2. Both are small for my shoulder bag and was more than enough.

This makes me want to go on vacation (again) this summer! I have a newish GRIIIx - lately I've been walking around with manual focus, loosely set to hyperfocal, all else auto or aperture priority for a tiny bit more control. There's almost no shutter lag this way, even less than snap focus. I think I need that simple setup because my photo brain melts when I'm in chaotic environments. Also I'm enjoying the challenge of composing with most things in focus. I hope you enjoy the rest of your trip.
@christopherbgriffith Жыл бұрын
I am 100% about the gritty, real cities when traveling. We just got back from our Portugal trip and Lisbon & Porto had this feel. Less fully chaotic, but super busy and bustling. I love the energy and there are so many things to photograph in that environment. Also, totally agree about Aperture Priority for the GRIII - that's how I primarily shot it on the trip. I also use the highlight-weighted metering mode, then the exposure compensation dial to make quick adjustments to it. Amazing to be able to reach into my pocket, turn the camera on as I'm raising it, and be taking pictures in a couple of seconds when a scene occurred.

You have expressed exactly how I felt when I dropped out of the sky into New Delhi, India. Yikes! Massive culture shock. Cows, dogs, scooters, cars, smoke, people, all at once, all the time. I accompanied my son on a 30 day excursion and for the first three or four days, as we traveled around, I kept saying to myself, What am I doing here? I need to go "home". I then realized that if I wanted to stay in my comfort zone, and experience western culture, I should have stayed home. I settled in, and for 30 days with my camera (film) I became fascinated by the people and the culture. We traveled like what I like to say "close to the ground". One of the best experiences of my life. Great images and commentary.
@photoferretuk1787 Жыл бұрын
On the schedule for April 2024 . Looking forward to Delhi. Like you say, outside Westernised normality, but that initial Day 1 shock is always one of the best parts. The little confusion, overwhelming disorientated feel. Then once into like day 3 and you got your bearings and know where to get things, how to move about more you get that other good feel of assurance and a sense of familiarity creeping in. I like it. So far the biggest experience of those has been Tokyo.

Omar, the scooter "side project" was a brilliant idea and I really enjoyed the shots and imho for me those are more proper "street photography" than the usual "people walking infront a backdrop" shots. Take that approach back home! It's funny how I started street photography in order to get better at photography so that I would know what I'm doing when I would travel, etc. and now when I actually travel I have to remember to also take personal/memory shots and not only hunt for street shots. 😅

I was in the front passenger seat holding on for dear life, but it was an amazing experience. You’re right about “what WTF is going on here”. Most of my photos were street photos and of course the crazy scooters/motorcycles!! I took a ton of pictures and a lot of them look like the ones you took! Amazing place. BTW - the motorists and pedestrians in Bacoli aren’t much different than Naples. You have to experience it to believe it.

Didn’t get many “keepers”, but I’ll go back to get those one day. PS! Didn’t find the place as wild as I had expected. But that might say more about my expectations than anything else. But the scooters in Quartieri Spagnoli was crazy wild. I definitely loved that.

Hi, Omar. Clearly it is likely you're back already, but you'll really benefit from setting up and using the three MyUser settings on the GR III. It makes a world of difference. I've been through three GRs in the past 3 and a half years as my only camera and have never used the PASM other than the U1 through U3. It gives you the option to do really quick changes. For instance, if you like shooting Aperture priority, you could set a U setting with f11, one with f5.6 and one with f4. Then, you can change between these three way more quickly than otherwise. Do also experiment with Snap Focus, not full press snap. It is a game changer. Anyway, I'm very glad to see nobody stole your things while you were in Napoli. Greetings from Greece. Would love to buy you a beer if you ever visit.

Italian driving may be summarised thus. Elsewhere learners are taught to slow and use caution when approaching a junction controlled by lights in case they turn red. In Italy, nah! Put your foot down. I've driven there quite a lot. You either drive like a local or end up as road kill. Sometime literally. Lovely pictures by the way. Glad you didn't get mugged. 👍🏻🙂
