How To Inline Skate

How To Inline Skate

Күн бұрын

When I was a child, ice hockey was my life. Now, as an adult, after many years, I am back on ice ... and this happens. Why? Why something that used to be second nature I cannot do anymore?
Let's first clarify one thing. I do skate a lot ... on rollerblades. In the summer I am out rollerblading almost every day.
On ice though, the few times I've been out recent years it's been during those open ice hours, packed with people. This is the first time in a long long time where I have the ice to myself.
So what has become natural to me is the rollerblade powerstop. On ice it makes the blade dig into the ice. Combined with a sharp turn it kinda works in a way, I mean, it does, but it's NOT a hockey stop.
The second time on the ice, magic happens. Yes, magic. While I did not focus on doing a hockey stop, not trying to do a hockey stop. I just did it. On my weak side! Both blades sideways, parallel, shaving off ice, like a hockey stop shall be.
It's like some long lost memory just came back. And of course I repeated it. Over and over again. No effort needed. The hockey stop is back just like that.
Funny though. It worked on my weak side. On rollerblades it's the opposite. With inline skates I do the powerstop only on my dominant side. I cannot do it on my weak side at all. And now on ice hockey skates it's the opposite.
It's like when I try my dominant right side, I put too much weight on my right foot and my left foot turns in a ninety degree angle. As if I am still wearing rollerblades.
Again, magic happens. After half an hour, the hockey stop is back on my right side too. I repeat it. And repeat. And it works every time.
The lesson of this story is that you never forget. It just takes some effort to get memories back. Be patient. Trust me. It's worth it.
And if you've never learned the hockey stop in the first place, I'll explore this topic more, so stay tuned for updates.

This is so true! I played at the pro level in 1996 blew my knee out! Knee was never the same! Long story short over 20 yrs later and 100 lbs heavier I had an itch to play again! I could only glide, it felt like I never knew how to skate! I lost 40lbs and it took about five 1 hour sessions on the rink and it all came back like I never stopped! Of course much slower and not as solid on my skates but it was an amazing feeling again and I’m glad I did it.❤️🏒🇨🇦 Oh yeh I’m 46 and my hockey career ended at 25! I started skating at 5 and played intercity AAA MINOR hockey all my life! Played in the QMJHL and in the AHL.

Very similar story for me. I skated inline hockey my whole life, and when I took up ice skating too I was almost completely unable to learn to hockey stop until I gave it a go on my weak side where I found that it was ridiculously easy. Glad to know I'm not the only one.

I like your videos, there is a clarity and precision, and a down to earthness, which suits my learning style I am a 53 year old learner, trying to get to grips with ice skating. Videos such as yours are invaluable. Your comment on the weight distribution on both feet is interesting, and I'll see if I can work on that. Keep up the good work. Incidentally, nice to see you wearing protective clothing. Why risk injury.

I played hockey from age 4 to 15. Off skates for 50 years. I started skating 6 weeks ago. Very humbling experience. I totally get what you are saying. I had no confidence in stopping until I started doing lines at a good pace. Low and behold, I could hockey stop. Now if only my quads would stop burning..... Thanks fo sharing your story. I think that unless a person has not had this experience they just won't get the point.... Cheers!

Magic happens when you don't put your knees in a triangle posture but open hip and move one knee away outside from under the body position, both legs become parallel, same as runners and stopping speed on both legs become almost equal. Thus less difference in speed btw legs turn into less rotation power. More weight on both balls of the feet, not fingers makes rotation more controllable

I still play hockey every winter. Yes, we have ice hockey in Dubai! But this summer I inline skated so much, in the city, at the parks and at the skate park that when I got back on ice I too had "forgotten" how to hockey stop on ice. But, as you said it came back quickly. I find it interesting how you need to lift and lighten up on your blades before the hockey stop. It feels almost gentle compared to the inline skating techniques. Great videos! I'm amazed at how quickly you can produce them. I am so slow at putting up new videos. Keep up the good work!

This maneuver is my greatest adversary atm. Going back and fourth from roller to ice hockey all the time is really difficult because of obvious reasons, and I can never figure out how to hockey stop on ice skates. I can move swiftly and with little wasted movement, but I always resort to dragging my right foot behind me in an inverse "t stop" I guess. It works but it's not as efficient and I do not feel like I have the control that I do when performing a hockey stop on concrete. I think my main problem is keeping my momentum going forward. I've put about twelve or thirteen hours into trying to figure just this out, and for some reason can't do it.

The primary difference between the two stops is where your weight is concentrated on the foot and the angle of the skate. During the inline stop your weight is concentrated in the heel of the stopping foot. In the ice skating stop the weight of your feet is centered in the balls (or pads) of your foot (near the front of your foot just before the toes start). Also, in the inline stop you angle the stopping foot because you have too much grip when standing up straight. In ice skating you have very little grip when standing straight up. So to do the ice skating stop you don't angle your foot, because if you do it will grab an edge. So you start the stop while standing up and then add angle to increase stopping power. The two stops are almost opposites.

Great tips and descriptors. Glad I'm not the only one that can power stop on inlines but struggle w a TRUE hockey stop on ice. I have to remind myself to put the front skate, IN FRONT, or it just becomes a tight turn. Nor is it a forced, digging stop. I hear skaters often talk about edges when it comes to stopping. Edges in many cases are great for other techniques but in this instance I feel like I am gaining a better understanding of stopping by riding on the flats of the ice blades. In your Relearning, did you experience the same thing? Thank you!

I teach hockey stops to kids and I give kids something to think about when I teach them. If you ever forget, a good way to remember (without trial and error like what happened this time) is just to make your blades less angled and more perpendicular. You will tend to slide more... but it is easier to adjust then digging into the ice from a sharp angle. In other words, your foot is more straight up as opposed to pushing in from a low angle. It has to do with edge control, but even when I teach beginners, once their feet are more straight up (which is a bit counter intuitive), the faster they learn the hockey stop (often within 10 minutes for adults and right away for kids - beginners that is).
