"Level 7" basically says that rather than focusing on books themselves, we focus on Ideas we derive out of those books, and maintain a "hash" table with ideas as indices (for those of you who know what hash tables in computer science are). It is definitely very powerful, yet, can be time consuming.

Yea the problem is that usually with steps 5 and 6 you have reached the comprehension and most likely remember it so you don't feel the need for more rivisitation. But sometimes taking time to reorganize stuff every year or some years it's useful and keeps you more sharp on the things you read. I'm thinking of applying this to things in engineering work where you have a process to follow and many formulas and references to add.

I recently found your channel and I just cant stop listening till your video screen goes black. I can resonate so much. I only have one person in my circle who loves discussing these things and we bore everyone else in the group. Just wanted to put down a couple of my thoughts which I am sure you will be able to resonate with 1. The more we get deeper into learning, the simplest things become like axioms in our head. On top of which we base our more complicated info on. This is why when experts explain things to beginners, they skip out on explaining the smaller bits cuz in their head its like an axiom, which people dont need explanation for. 2. How looking at people doing big things can make you think "I could have never thought of that" or "How on earth did he/she know, where to start, what to do", but not realizing the a lot of things that each one of us do, could seem like a big deal to others. So we all have our strengths, you just happen to figure out for the things you are naturally good at or passinate about.

yo this is amazing. i'd been thinking about how to remember everything I read for a long time, and just figured forgetting was inevitable because I couldn't imagine a way to keep track of everything when so much learning comes from so many different areas in life. I had toyed around with writing my takeaways on goodreads but sometimes you just don't want it publicized and there's no way to organize your reviews/thoughts especially when the information you want to include doesn't purely fit the definition of a "review." i'm so excited to start experimenting with this. Thanks for sharing. This is highly align with 'How to Read A Book' which I'm reading now. I feel like Level 7 is essentially how a literature review forms. Very useful for people doing research or content creators. Although it takes time and effort (sometimes my head hurts when there too many thoughts happening inside), I found it is THE most efficient way to become a knowledgeable person. The whole process is to create links between knowledge from different sources and make them as support for what I gotta say. And when I found the logic behind those pieces, I got myself a pretty good story to tell. Over time, I might not remember where all these come from, but they become knowledge that I can use to improve my life and help others if they have similar issues. Because at the end of the day, knowledge is not something to retain, but to release.

I read one chapter/section/topic and then immediately after, I write down everything I remember from it. Sometimes this takes a while. The more you do this, the more your memory seems to expand. I can now remember almost everything from any given book, by recall. I used to passively absorb books, but now I can merely think of a book then take a mental journey through the chapters, recalling all the important points.

Tbf you don't actually forget everything you read. Usually, if you have a trigger on a certain topic mentioned in the book you'll suddenly remember loads of it.

On the flip side if you have a serious interest in a specific topic your brain gets a lot more efficient. I’m sure a zoologist would remember that a white rhino is 2300kg and fourth biggest organism instantly. If you’re a pilot that information is useless to you so your brain discards it. You’d probably be able to remember plane facts pretty quickly though

A zoologist won't remember that the facts about a white rhino are on the wikipediapage Large organism, in the animal section that is right after the plantsection. All a zoologist will remember are the facts about the rhino but not the rest of the page or how he got that information. Also, a zoologist won't remember those facts instantly. The average working memory sucks and cannot recall information instantly after 1 glance, repetition is required in any way.

As a literature graduate, how I long to read fiction without thinking about it too deeply. You’re so lucky! :) I use LibraryThing to manage my books - I can bookmark, organise, tag add notes etc. Been using it for a while and really like it’s functionality (including a barcode scanner function for your phone to just scan the details of the print book in).

My 3 sentences (points) for this video, and first time applying the concept: - Even if you think you're super smart, you're going to forget most of what you learn if you don't capture it. Make sure you take notes, and set them up to be reviewed, integrated and applied in the right way. - At a minimum, outline 3 sentences to capture the main principles on what you learn about and you'll be glad you did. At best, you set up an entire system to re-read the books that changed your life, make proper summaries on them, and then turn them into an evergreen system that becomes a principles-esque knowledge hub for guiding your life, and other lives in the future. - Don't just copy and paste quotes. Use your own words to rephrase the concept to properly integrate the concept.

I have clicked this video out of curiosity, but Maaan... I just realised that I have been on the last level of your stages since 2 years ago, and it has changed my life and keeps changing my life. And I have added a new level on top of it also, I don't only write notes from books but from absolutely anything including talks with other people, videos, lectures, from my job, and even my own original ides. And a second level even beyond that is that every day I come back and read these notes and edit them like a Gardner comes back and does a little bit of watering to some plants, some health check to other plants or some throwing away for some dead plants. I would call this system : My personal Wiki (and yes, it has hyperlinks towards things inside of it and outside of it)

Being a geography student, whenever I'm telling that summarising has changed my life since I have found it ..people are really shocked that how can I summary topics of geography... But trust me I have gone through a lot nd trust me A LOT of methods ... But summarising is the best so far ...it's been 4 years already So I 1000% agree with Ali that summarising stuff does help you to remember stuff.

Again, my mind is completely blown away by your 7-stage of memorization. Is there a word for people who love note-taking... like noteaphile? I believe the Dumbledore stage has reached Zen but not all that impossible. It's doable but with a passion, a very valuable passion which will bring one (and hopefully many, if you share it) to a general knowledge and references, collective memories of life. It's totally brilliant and I can't wait to watch this video again. Also, at the very end when you mentioned that you would tell your 12-year-old self about the 3-sentence summary thing, I think I am going to start telling my students too (and do that myself!).
