50% of my reason for watching these retrospectives at this point is to see how people pronounce words like "Navi" or "Saria". The other 50% is just cos I like hearing people talk about zelda.

Yes I pronounced it Nav eye because it was short for navigator and a pronounce it Sarah because it's alternative spelling for the name.
@cmonslowpoke
@cmonslowpoke 2 жыл бұрын
@@Buhjr Nah it's Saria because she's named after a style of music, the aria, which is pronounced like "Daria". All the other Kokiri have music names too, but they're named after the "do re mi" style of music notation, eg Fado and Mido. Interestingly, this also reveals that Mido's name isn't pronounced like the classic dog name "Fido" as I'd grown up doing, but more like "Keto", since it's "doe ray me" and not "doe ray my". Also Fado rhymes with avocado, I guess?

Hey got Gerudo wrong (surprising), ocarina right (equally surprising), but kept mispronouncing Hylean even after getting it right the first time. Kinda funny what we hear when we pay attention though, huh?

I love hearing the testimony of people who played this as a child. Works of art like these are resonating with children of every generation now, which I think is wonderful. But OoT will always be my gem, and the gem of many others fighting against the cruel flow of time.

I think back on how it felt to play OOT as a kid and I find it incredible that there was a time in my life that I could be so completely and utterly absorbed by a game. I think what makes this game so impactful for me, and countless others, is that you just simply can't go back to the mindset you had before you experienced this game. It leaves a mark on you, not unlike a milestone, but for the love of interactive media.

I was 17 when this OoT was released, but I didn’t own an N64 until I was 19. Back in 1999 we had dial-up internet. No youtube, very few and hard-to-find online walkthroughs. I had just moved out of my parents’ house and I had my very own apartment with no roommates. (I’m sure I’m not the only introvert among us…). I sat on my cheap futon and played this game on my clunky tube TV for hours and days and weeks. The characters were my friends and I have so many wonderful memories of unlocking these secrets all by myself. I played this game through at least 6 times over the course of my young adulthood. As much as I’d love to replay it today (still have the old N64), I can’t get past the polygons and technical limitations. Watching your video is a perfect substitution … thank you for posting. ❤

I got my N64 as a birthday present in 2000 and it came with Super Mario 64. That game blew me away, but when I played Ocarina of time later that year, that's when my life changed! I got so immersed in that game, the story, the graphics, gameplay... I was living it. 22 years later, at age 35, I own every game that came out, played almost all of them and the magic is still there.

This was a beautiful tribute, and it’s made me tear up. I got this game when it first came out and I was 6 years old. I could never make it past Queen Ghoma, so I put the game down out of frustration for at least 3 years. Eventually I gave it another shot, and the moment I realized what an expansive world outside Kokiri Forest there was to explore, I could barely step away from the controller. I was so drawn into the story and fond of the detailed environments, that when I woke up 7 years later as adult Link, taking down Ganandorf was personal. He had corrupted this beautiful place I’d grown to love. Thanks for bringing back some of these feeling and memories for me.

Games like this just don’t come around much anymore, not even in the Zelda series. They’re really indicative of a bottled moment in time, where all the stars aligned and the perfect team was brought together under the perfect circumstances to make something truly special. Kids these days can have their big open world adventures, but I know of a time where this was as big as it got and people were happy. I’m only 17, but I think sometimes I was born too late.

I love this game. When I was around 5 we had to move to Europe for my dads job. To help with the transition, my uncle sent me his GameCube along with the ocarina of time master quest. I had this tiny Disney themed crt and I spent days playing and exploring all of hyrules intricacies. Fast forward 15 years of loving Zelda and the art of video games as a whole, hearing your recounting makes my appreciation for the beauty art forms can impact people with grow even moreso. As someone who is now 20, still struggling with the fear and loneliness of transitioning into adulthood, you’re way of storytelling, as I saw above inspired by how I met your mother (a show I love) makes me feel good and safe. Thank you. I’ll be coming back! Have a wonderful Christmas and/or happy holidays!

He would tell me all about it, and I couldn't wait to play it myself. When I finally got my chance I couldn't believe how awesome the game was. The world felt huge (replaying it later I would realize how small it actually is), the night and day cycle and weather effects made it feel real. Maybe you had to be there, but to me this game will always be a masterpiece.

I still have my childhood copy of Ocarina of Time with my save file where I'm stuck in the water temple. Still to this day have not beaten it at 32 years old. I have it wrapped in bubble wrap and I keep it with my collection. One day when I'm ready I will jump back into it. I just kind of find it fascinating that my save game has been frozen in time for over 15 years waiting for me to pick it up and complete it.

I have to warn you that Ocarina is one of a handful of N64 cartridges with battery backed SRAM save memory. If that battery runs out, and it's pretty old now, no more old save for you. Either play it soon, or look into dumping the file to back it up. Retrode 2 with the N64 addon might be the cheapest option for the latter.

I really don’t know how to explain it but, I appreciate this so so much. My dad somehow got this for me and my brothers and at the time in 97 when it came out the N64 was so hard to get that Christmas, along with OoT (along with SM64 which toe get both at the same time!) This means a lot because my dad died 9 years later which might seem like a long time, but we all played this game together. And everyone was invested we wouldn’t play the game without all of us being there. We would call 1-800 nintendo for game help and got a $400+ phone bill my mom was so mad.. But this game holds such a special place that I can’t play it again or it will change. And for some reason this doesn’t change it. So thank you for doing this and I hope you keep going forward.

As a kid this was the first game I ever played and beat with a little help from my dad with the puzzles. This was the game that got me into games. I watched him play it for a long time. He showed me how to play and would help with the puzzles if I couldn't do it. All bosses I did myself. Nostalgia or not this game will always be my favorite game ever made. If or when I have kids this will be the game I want them to start on like my dad did.

During the Volvagia fight, just climb down the side of the platform. It's a climbable surface, and while you're on it, the falling rocks can't hit you. Do the same thing when it chases you; it can't get to you so it just goes back down a hole. Also, in the Morpha fight, if you stay in the room's far corners, you can't be touched.

@@thedadliestman I’m playing BoTW with my three year old right now and he loves it. It’s like a giant treasure hunt with tons of items he can talk about and puzzles and patterns he can think about. As a bonus, he eats better if we tell him his food is “hearty” or has cooking ingredients in it from Zelda, like Hylian Shrooms, Prime Meat, or Goron Spice. I think I’d have played Ocarina first, but like you said, Nintendo needs to release an N64 Mini!

This hits home. I remember getting my N64 + Goldeneye bundle the Christmas after it was released. There's one photo of me from that day, totally absorbed into the game, and looking back on it, it really struck me how dramatic it was to leap from 2D to 3D like that, so suddenly, as a non-PC player back then. The sense of awe I had from seeing Super Mario 64 when it first came out is a feeling I have scarcely felt since. However, I have come to resent Nintendo these days, as much as I have to love them, they just don't seem to be very player/customer oriented. They have a wealth of games from their past that millions of people like me - now salaried adults, would pay good money for with very little thought. The nostalgia alone draws me back to these games, yet the experiences are still so solid and enjoyable;. The ones from my N64 library and the slowly trickling releases on Switch scratch an itch, but there's still so many I haven't had the privilege to enjoy. I cannot fathom why, Nintendo seem to be forcing us to ROMs or buying them second hand at zero profit to them, when releasing them properly would open the floodgates and a flood of cash to come rushing toward them. I must be missing out on insider info or legal issues with it, but...Nintendo...pls.
