How I Removed This Albrecht Chuck - It Was Really Stuck! - Jacobs Taper

Here is how I removed an Albrecht chuck from a Jacobs Taper Arbor. I had to get creative and make a puller!

I have always been facilitated with how taper fits can hold. It goes against all common sense but they do! Sometimes the only thing that works is the blow of a steel hammer, that initial shock transfers down to the bottom of the taper. I learned this the hard way while trying to remove my MT2 taper from the mill, I was banging the draw bolt like crazy with a soft blow hammer and it wouldn’t budge, switched to a steel hammer and one tap later it was free. I repeated the experiment thinking I loosened it up with the soft blow but alas it proved my theory- Only a sharp hammer strike would free my tooling. Great stuff Jon! 😃👍

Right On John! 🙌 Right! Just like on the Bridgeport Mill, I tap the drawbar with my brass hammer to release the taper and it pops right off. This one was really stuck and it’s interesting that the new JT6 taper I just got is shorter than the one that was in the Chuck. This new one e will be much better. It is wild how strong the hold is on the taper. That’s a good tip with the shock of the hammer blow.

Crazy stuck, when you went for the cheater I was half expecting the Chuck to launch across the shop when it let loose.

When you had to go to a Pipe extension for leverage , I got to admit i was on the edge of my seat , expecting anything at that point ... glad it worked out .. that was on tight ..

That really was tight! I was on the edge of my seat too, hoping it would work and the inside of the taper was still in good shape!

It seems that some projects just want to fight you all the way, great solution though Jon, but had me worried for your Proto wrench for a moment, that sure was stuck tight !

I agree with Scourcrafters comment. However, on my radial arm drill there is a threaded collar around the jacobs quill that does exactly what your tool did. Tapers are an unknown quantity, the physics are baffling. This kind of content is so useful. Thanks for bringing us along and showing that brilliant solution. Cheers

Mine was equally as stuck. I couldn’t even press it out without the fear of something exploding. In the end I heated the female side and hit it so hard with my drift that the drift completely deformed and got stuck.
