Mad respect. I was on the gaming addiction too, especially since I started coding with Minecraft mods. Replacing it with coding is one of the best things.

I stop listening to his advice when he called players degenerate.... as a gamer i find that really insulting to be called degenerate. That guy has very low esteem on us.

Yeah I kind of felt certain ways he described things could’ve been a little better. I don’t think gamers are “losers” and I understand he doesn’t mean it that way but that’s how it came across

I was right there with you except the "monkey on my back" was World of Warcraft. To this day I still miss it and occasionally resub to check new stuff out :D Props to you for identifying something that was holding you back and putting foot to ass to change your life for the better! However, I do take issue with your take on video games "not being cool" and your overall vilification of them. Of course mileage varies, but to think that this one thing was the "root of all evil" and that it applies to everyone really misses the mark. Your problem (and mine) was a problem of discipline. You can "have your cake and eat it too", as it were. It's all time management. I would say "it's all about balance", but that tends to be a misnomer because people usually mean it as "everything in equality" or something to that effect. It's constantly shifting. I have a close friend who is husband, a father of 2 young children, has a full-time job, has multiple freelance gigs, is active in their church, loves to cook for a lot of people at once as often as possible, AND is one of the most avid gamers I know! How? Olympic level time management. Sure, he doesn't log the hours he used to as a kid, but they are still a big part of his life because of the joy they bring -- as it goes for me and as it is possible for ANYONE. Point is, you can have a healthy relationship with video games (or "x" hobby that doesn't bring in profit/money) and still self-actualize to your ultimate potential. Again, props to you for making the change YOU needed AND for sharing your story!

Self improvement is great. Gaming Addiction or using gaming as a form of escapism from issues is bad. Now and again I game with some old work friends few IT department heads and long time senior devs all scattered some in different countries even. Gaming can be cool, just don't forget to go outside see places and read a book every so often. Gaming is like watching a movie perhaps not every night.

I agree with constantly trying to improve and doing things that provide more long term gratification. But Im not sure about switching the mentality from "I want all my friends to like me" so I play minecraft, to "I want all the girls to like me" so I go to the gym. Yes its better to go to the gym, but what if a girl doesn't like you... are you just gonna fall apart?
@AmanManazir Жыл бұрын
Good point, I guess wanting girls to like me provided that initial activation energy to go to the gym but you have to start to love working out intrinsically to keep going
