I am in a similar situation. I can retire at 45yrs old if I can manage to live off of a 1500/month budget in Thailand or Philippines (I've picked Philippines)for the next 15 years after. Sold House in 2021 and could start tomorrow. But current employment salary is just too high to pass it up for another 2-3 years. Every 1 year I continue to work is 3 more years I can live in Thailand or Philippines. Once you get rid of "stuff" and live like a free nomad it makes it extremely easier to be able to jump off the hamster wheel and retire.

I semi retired at 39 and ended up travelling with inbetween stints back to Australia. Id had so many failed relationships attempts in which a Canadian buddy told me i needed to check out angeles city in the Philippines to just have a gfe to forget my misfortune. I met a young hot gal who after 2 weeks did my head in. I then tried with a girl in bkk but it blew out to. I went to Pattaya and that was it i was sold. I spent the next few years staying in Pattaya for 3 to 5 months of the year and decided id retire there fully when I hit 50 in 2021. I lasted 8 months. The place is amazing for up to 3 months but from then on it became a drag. Id wake up in the mornings thinking far out so and so is coming over today and not wanting anyone because i was shagging myself to absolute exhaustion. I had to have rests like of 5 days regularly just to rest up and when the bars began functioning again in late 2021, i just never went out to them due to exhaustion. I took a trip to koh Phangan to meet a European friend where i regained my strength and realised i had to leave Pattaya. I now live in bang saray 25km to the south and have the most balanced retired life. Whats more i see only 3 girls a week which for a 52yo is enough. Usually see all 3 in 2 days as I use the rest of my time just jungle walking and swimming that rejuvenates my libido to go nuts again over those 2 days

My best friend here in Pattaya is getting out this month. He took a job in BKK after not working for a couple years. He’s over living here. So far the city is a good fit for me but it’s not perfect. I stay in Pratumnak by Cosy Beach… it’s like a quiet little town all it’s own. I’m not a bar guy, never have been. I only go into the city once a week usually… and that’s mostly to catch a movie, walk along the beach or do some shopping. I’m hardly ever there at night. I did stay there for NYE and Songkran but that was more like taking a vacation, not living in the city. I’ve got a good balance here and I’ll be adding school to it on Monday. I workout every day, go for walks, play games, study about different things, plan trips and travel. In my 5 months I’ve gone to Laos and Cambodia… off to Laos again next week, Japan in July, Europe in September. I eat pretty healthy but I do need to start actually cooking soon. I drink 2-6 beers a week and probably average 1 or 2 dates a month. Not looking for a relationship now but I’m open to it. I’m just enjoying being retired, living a quiet life and working on myself. Trying to be a better me. For now this area works for me because I love being by the beach, my view of the gulf is good for my mental health, I’ve made some good friends, food options are great, I love my quiet neighborhood and community and the city is there if I ever want it.

@@peteonretreat2023 yeah the only thing it's got for me is bars, gogos and massage joints. I'm not into malls or movie theatres etc. I love the beach. Swimming is my preferred fitness regime. Bang saray is close to a couple of clean and beautiful beaches. I recommend although you probably already know them Sai kaew and nang ram beaches. Waters clean, usually flat so swimming easy although some days it can have an annoying swell and the scenery around is beautiful. Especially Sai kaew although a huge complex was built last year that eye sores the southern end these days but makes up for it with the Russian women perve

I have a similar plan, I have about $400k in equity between 2 properties. I’ll sell one in 5 years to pay for the move and finance the first 3-4 years. I’ll be 57, I’d go sooner but want to keep working until my youngest is done with college. My job wants me to work till I’m 65, but I refuse. My father died at 55 and never got a chance to retire. I won’t make that mistake. I’m planning my first trip for 5 weeks later this year.

Sounds like you have a good plan and it's commendable (and understandable) that you are going to see your daughter through college first. Since I am childless, my situation was different so I was able to seize a different opportunity. I think 5 years should be enough time to see some bounce back and future growth in the housing and trading markets but what do I know... I don't even proof read my videos before putting them out lol. Yea, all that stuff! I’m dealing with that now as I am mid way through my decision. Retirement was way out there and then ‘boom’ things change. 3 weeks in January to see if it can be real 🤷🏽‍♂️ Belize? Albania? Philippines for the women? Well, I’ll try Thailand first since it’s got Buddhism, spicy food, and maybe a girl. Pattaya reminds me of a little bit Vegas and a lot of Santa Cruz and Calistoga. You’ll have a blast exploring Thailand and getting to know some Thai people. The farther you get out of your comfort zone the better time you’ll have! Take a Thai language class and learn some vocab and you’ll be hoisting beers with locals all around the country. Vientiane, Laos is a beautiful city as well. You could do a lot worse than spending a month there exploring for ultra cheap prices. Can’t wait to hear more about your adventures.

I might do some cost videos, I’m not really sure yet. I will say that my estimated basic living expenses this month (food, rent, insurance, utilities and bills) is under $1,000 US. Now add the extra shopping I’ve done to round out my wardrobe, I bought stuff for my condo, beers and going out a couple nights out a week, movies and rideshares most days of the week and I’ll still come well under $2,000 US at the end of the month (we’ll under my monthly budgeted amount as planned). It’s looking like travel around the country is going to be incredibly affordable as well. My friend is in Koh Chang on holiday from Pattaya. It is an island 5 hours away and it costs him $24 US for the 5 hour taxi and included the boat ride to his guest house.

My suggestion is to stay in Pattaya a few months, Phuket a few months, Krabi a few months then Chaingmai, Kanganaburi...etc. Get an AIS sim card that you buy one time payment of 2.500 bath for a year and you get unlimited internet and call ( time out at 30 minutes then you have to redial). You have to change the sim card with new number every 12 months, but it's the cheapest way to have cell phone and internet. Thais called this " Sim Thep". Most phones today have 2 sim card slots, I just keep one number I like in one slot and another number is the one I change every year.

Since you worked at Trader Joe’s have you ever thought of having a similar business in Thailand. There are small expat shops in various locations that have a variety of foreigner food. Koh Phangan is probably the best choice as far as quality of products?

I’ve thought a little about it but not much. I’ve said that if I get bored, I’ll do something but so far just living and running this channel is enough. If I was to do a physical location type business, I’d either do a beachy style cafe with sandwiches, salads, wraps and tacos or a small indie movie theater with food that runs mostly older movies that would change often.

Excellent video Pete. Just bumped into your channel for the first time tonight and found this video very informative. I just returned from a month long trip where I stayed in the same area as you. I stayed at the Unixx condo very close to the mountain where you're at. Just like you did, I also sold my house (did it in 2021) and i have plans to retire in thailand next year by getting a retirement visa. Had that house in america for 8 years and got a lot of money on that sale. Like you, I see that money lasting anywhere from 10-12 years before having to look into social security and pulling from my 401k. I am currently 56 and can start pulling 401k (if for some strange reason I had to) in just 4 years, so I should be good on the retirement and living off the savings from the house sale. Again, keep up the good work and I look forward to looking at your earlier and future vids. Of course, we are all looking forward to the famous "cost of living" vid. Likely very low for you if you're not in Pattaya for the sex industry.

He had perfect timing and got top Dollar for his House. He went to The Phil’s. I hesitated and sat idle but it’s all still good. I have plenty of Vac time where I can get to Thailand for 5 Weeks or so in Jan. I always wanted to move there. Figured I would end up in BKK but now I’m leaning towards Pattaya. I do have a video about my personal visa journey… long story short; I got shut down on an education visa because of “stuff” and will be getting a retirement visa. Unfortunately I don’t turn 50 until July so I’ll be leaving Thailand and country hoping for about 2 months so I don’t go over the “180 day limit in country without a visa” limit. Thank you so much! Honestly, I may return to work someday. It could be Trader Joe’s, it could be something else. I’ve always wanted to work at a Disney park so 6 months to a year in Florida is a possibility. Right now it’s I’m pursuing a possible 10 years of travel abroad sketch but I’m very flexible with it. I will never know what’s going to happen but I’m already much happier here. Just remember… You have options and you’re not stuck. We only live once.

Both are killer. I don’t know how it is out in the villages but my cell plan has never dropped a call and is like $20/month and in my condo I have fiber with HBO Go for like $35/month. The mobile plans here are awesome. You can change your plan every month just by using the mobile app. You can buy little bits and pieces on the mobile app so if I need to use my phone as a hotspot for a month, I could buy one month of crazy fast unlimited Internet for pretty dang cheap. No ideas really on making money but Thailand is inexpensive and even making an extra $500 a month or so will go along way. As for adjusting to Thai life, I wouldn’t say I really have. My life still feels very western. I speak only English, I eat 50% western foods, I have western friends.. I haven’t left Pattaya yet or seen a squat toilet so the transition has been really easy. I do recommend building some friendships right away. That’s helping a lot.

Yes, they have English movies in their original language with Thai subtitles and they have them dubbed in Thai. When you buy tickets, they show a speaker icon with either Eng or TH so you know what language the audio is in.

You know, I never asked him. I think buying as much house as you can afford was because he felt it was a great time to invest in real estate (especially in Austin 8 years ago). An established neighborhood probably because it’s less of a gamble, has a set and proven school district, community and market and maybe because it’ll have more grown shade trees. These are just guesses though. I sold my house about 9 months earlier than I had planned because I saw the market slowing down. So glad I did! Oh, and thanks for watching!

Pete’s original plan was to buy a relatively inexpensive starter home farther out of town and then eventually rent it and trade up to more of his dream home. Knowing how kind a person he is, I wasn’t sure that being a landlord was the best path for him. Also, his job was demanding and his handyman skills/interests were limited. I also suggested that there are hidden financial and mental costs of a long commute. I don’t think I recommended a specific age of home, but do believe that an established community is generally a good idea. (I was a bit surprised that he bought such a large house!!)

First thing is to look into your choice of lifestyle and budget out here. There are plenty expats living here for $1,000 usd/month, it just depends on what you want from your life here. My personal goal is under $2,000 a month (but my budget is higher and this allows me to save and/or pay for bigger trips like Japan). I have a full cost of living breakdown for my first month here and KZbin is filled with such videos. With social security at 62, you’re looking at 7 years of your own funds until then… at $1,000/month that’s a minimum of $84,000 for a minimal reasonable nest egg in my opinion. Hope that helps 🙏🏼

If you are at least 50, the retirement visa is a good option imo. You just renew it every year and check in every 90 days. If you have enough money (and you think it's worth it), the elite visa is the option with the least amount of maintenance involved. A chunk of my money is currently liquid so I have easy access while most of it is in various investments (IRAs and Mutual Funds mostly). It's currently still all in US banks as well.

Really depends on your location and lifestyle. Some folks make it under $1000 US a month and others somehow spend over $3000. I’d consider my lifestyle moderate and I’m eating plenty of western foods but only go out 2-3 times a week. My first month came in under $2000

Hi Pete. Wow, great personal stories that you shared with us. If you want a friend to go to the movies with or hang out - hit me up. How do you move around? Bahtbus? BOLT taxi? Walk? Motorbike? Car? I used my visa agent to help me get a motorbike driving licence. I am a newbie like you here. I retired at 61 and I arrived in September. So, I have my motorbike driving license but I am still afraid to drive one ( they drive crazy and the driving on the left side of the road still confuses me ). My plan is to rent a motorbike for a month and for the first week or so, just to drive it around in my condo complex (it has huge grounds in front of Dongtan beach) to build up my comfort zone. Once that is established, then I will venture out into the streets of Jomtien and Pratumnak - where the driving is much calmer than in Pattaya city. Thoughts?

I’m always happy to make new friends and could use a movie buddy. I nearly Bolt everywhere for now. It’s just so incredibly affordable and being in Pratumnak it’s usually about $5.00 US (150b) round trip either into the city or down to south Jomtien (where my buddy lives and we meet up every week). I’m hesitant about the scooter too but I’ll probably get one if I stick around and most definitely if I moved into a smaller village. I have a friend that offered to teach me but I’ve heard of a place that does lessons (and I think that could be a fun video!) If m also still very much programmed to drive on the right and driving into the city is just crazy! Even with a scooter I’ll be taking Bolts into town when I go.

Studio Airbnb for the first month was $373. One bedroom for next month is a little over $600 but I didn’t really shop around. After that I’ll be looking for a nice place to stay awhile hopefully under $500 but I’ve fallen in love with this small neighborhood and by Pattaya standards it’s expensive.

Great story, great inspiration. Planning to do the same - originally planned on 2-5 years from now, but after just returning to the states from a month in the Kingdom, I'm shortening it to 2 years when I turn the double nickel. Current job is decent money so it's hard to make the break - as someone else mentioned in these comments, every year I work in the states is 3 years of living in Thailand. Very sick of the rat race and stress though. You only live once and you never know what's going to happen. Main concern with the move is that if I take the plunge and later decide it's not for me, it will be hard returning to the states where I'll need to make a whole lot more money to support myself than in Thailand, and I will have been out of the job market making it hard to find work.

I’ve been here 40 days so far and I came under my budget goal of $2,000 for my first month. While my actual budget limit for my 10 year plan is higher than that 2k, my goal is to come at or under it every month so that I can spend more on special trips and adventures when they come up. If you're dividing your nest egg to last 10 years, that means you're using 10% of your nest egg per year to live on. If instead you invested that money into Verizon stock, or similar, which currently pays a 7% dividend per year (3% less than the 10% you're planning spending), you can live off of just the dividends alone and not touch your principle, presumably indefinitely. That's assuming you can scale down your spending to 7%. If not, you can still eat into the principle each year to cover the 3%, but will at least still have something left over at the end of the 10 years compared to your original plan.

Currently I don’t have a visa. I’m on a 45 day visa exemption which I can extend for 30 days before having to leave the country. People from a long list of countries can enter without a visa so that’s what I did. I’m going to a visa agent this week to start my 30 day extension and see about getting an education visa. If that doesn’t work, I’ll do visa runs and travel around enough that I can start my retirement visa process in July (you have to be 50 to qualify)
