If it's a protective style such as really heavy or tight braids that put tension on your hair and scalp then I would say no because yes it may be protecting your ends but its pulling hair out of your scalp and causing irritation. Wigs can be protective as long as you're not neglecting your hair and edges. So when getting protective styles make sure it's a stylist that's not to ruff with detangling blow drying and braiding. And when getting your hair done for a protective style definitely deep condition and maybe protein treatment if you're high porosity since you're going to be going a while without moisturizing your full head. And a thing I like to do when my braids start to get old is put oil and leave in conditioner on my scalp
