This is a crankshaft from a Siezed and flooded Honda GV200 lawnmower engine that I saved by removing the aluminum with Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)
Sodium Hydroxide, known also as Caustic Soda and in some countries Lye, in a strong solution dissolves Aluminium. The really neat thing is that it does not affect other metals such as Carbide or HSS, carbon steel, or the coatings used on milling bits.
Noted: The concentration of the solution should be approximately 6 parts cold or lukewarm, (Not hot. The simple act of dissolving the powder will give off heat.), water to one part of powder measured by volume. Please use a pair of good rubber gloves and eye protection when making or handling the solution, and also do it outside.
What is sodium hydroxide (NaOH)?
Sodium hydroxide is sometimes called caustic soda or lye. It is a common ingredient in cleaners and soaps.
At room temperature, sodium hydroxide is a white, odorless solid. Liquid sodium hydroxide is colorless and has no odor. It can react violently with strong acids and with water. Sodium hydroxide is corrosive. NaOH can react with moisture from the air and may generate heat as it dissolves. This heat can be enough to cause a fire if it is near flammable materials.
Sodium hydroxide is useful for its ability to alter fats. It is used to make soap and as a main ingredient in household products such as liquid drain cleaners. Sodium hydroxide is usually sold in pure form as white pellets or as a solution in water.
What are some uses of sodium hydroxide?
Sodium hydroxide is used in bar soaps and detergents. Sodium Hydroxide is also used as a drain cleaner to unclog pipes.
Around 56% of sodium hydroxide produced is used by industry, with 25% of NaOH used in the paper industry. Some other uses include fuel cell production, curing food, removing skin from vegetables for canning, bleach, drain cleaner, oven cleaner, soaps, detergent, paper making, paper recycling, aluminum ore processing, oxide coating, processing cotton fabric, pickling, pain relievers, anticoagulants to prevent blood clots, cholesterol reducing medications, and water treatment.

First, yes, I am pretty confident that crank is usable. Not good as new, but then, its NOT new. Salvaged in my eyes also. 1. I would use a heavier weight oil, designed for Diesel motors, 20W-50. That will help to "float" the crank pin in the center of the rod bearing area. I'm not sure I remember the tear down video correctly, but I think this is a splash oiled system. If so be sure the splash rod is big enough that it does a good job splashing that oil. If it is a pumped oil system, you will be more certain of a good outcome here. 2. Yes Caustic (NaOH) gets hot enough to boil water when flakes are dissolved into water so please be careful especially with eye protection. Those are steam bubbles under those flakes in the hot water. If one gets to the surface as a bubble, and pops, it will splash tiny droplets into every corner of the room. Plan to dispose of your shirt. It will look like it has been shot by a shotgun with bird shot pellets. In your eyes, at that strength and temperature there will be NO second chance. Damage will be done within about 2 to 3 seconds. But that aggressive nature is what it takes to get the aluminum to come into solution in a reasonable time. Don't kid yourself on "it doesn't hurt steel" It will, just about 20 to 30 times slower than with aluminum. Your caution level seems ok. Just do not get fooled about the fact that it doesn't hurt steel like it does aluminum... your skin is closer to aluminum than to steel in how it will react. Great video...

I think this is a case where you would use plasti-gauge to measure the actual space between the connecting rod and bearing surface on the crankshaft.

Where I am from those are hard to get. If this was a serious car engine overhaul, then yes.

So glad that cleaned up well. The old con rod boy was it bad. Too bad you couldn’t save it. But you for sure saved the carburetor though. Can’t wait to hear this dead motor come back to life. Since it’s Halloween time I’m nicknaming this the zombie motor. Lol

I wonder why some cleaver mechanic/machinist doesn't search to find a bearing that would fit that crank and machine the connecting rod to accept the bear. Just thinking out loud... Thumbs Up!

as long as theres no raised edges around the indents to catch on the new shells then it will work great

That crank shaft cleaned up nice. And good tip on using the lye to clean off the galled aluminium. But I'm surprised this setup doesn't use a big end bearing. No shell babbet? No roller bearing? Asking for a friend :)

These small lawnmower engine do not use big end bearings. The 2 stroke engines do have roller bearings though.

Next time when you use a sandpaper then wrap it around the shaft and use a robe wrap this also around then sandpaper use the robe for even sanding the shaft.
