How I Select Our Sheep.
This video shows the first step in the replacement ewe lamb selection process I've developed.
Today we will get weights and data off these lambs, and vaccinate the ewe lambs with a new-to-me vaccine called Glanvac.
I will do a final selection of these lambs in another 4-6 weeks with a follow up booster vaccine of Glanvac.
I also go through the process of generating reports on my Gallagher Tsi system, and how I export it to Excel for further data analysis.
How do YOU select your ewe lambs?
What traits do you select for?
THANKS FOR WATCHING!!!

I love your videos. I am a software developer, not a farmer but for some reason I love watching you sheep farm...lol... I think some custom software would really help with keeping things organized. I would be happy to do it for free if you are interested. Sounds like a fun side project. Thanks

You are such a workhorse. I love the way you think and you so remind me of myself 15-20 years ago. Record keeping is important. I too always acknowledged when an animal looks my way, talking calms them I believe. I sing high praises to you. Stick to your guns, change when you feel it is needed. I have never seen such a great data system.

When you’re resizing columns in excel, if you double-click on the column width, it will automatically adjust to fit the data. If you select all the columns you have, and double click on the column width, it will auto-resize all of them. Hope this is a useful quick-tip for excel :) Thanks for the video, great info!

Sandi Brock you’re welcome! Here’s another idea. Have you played around with tables and sorting in excel? Once you’re in excel, try selecting all your data. Then right-click, format as table (I like to make it into light/medium blue With coloured gridlines - the gridlines are important). Tell it yes you have headers. Once you have your table made, then you start your sorting - so if you’re doing replacement lamb selecting...the adg column, sort descending. Select all from the top to the lowest number acceptable (I think you had said 0.5 ), highlight them as green. Go over to your litter size, sort ascending, select the twins and triplets, highlight green. Sort the breed of sire or dam, highlight green (or whatever color) the ones you want. Once you’ve highlighted the wanted stuff for each column, go back to the ID column and sort. Then as you look through it, you can see, which ewes have green in every/most column. You can do this kind of thing for all your different groups when making decisions and analyzing data. If the Gallagher system doesn’t already do stuff like this for you, this could be pretty useful. Does that make sense? Hope this helps I’m no sheep expert but I love excel. 😁

@@lynxacres1293 Any suggestions of where to learn Excel? I'm currently borrowing a Excel instructional book and I have watched a few basic tutorials here on youtube, but if you have any suggestions for other learning opportunities, I'd love to know about them.
@lynxacres1293
@lynxacres1293 5 жыл бұрын
Pendlera it’s hard to say. There’s so much you can do with excel, but a lot of times the issue is you didn’t know you can do something with it. I would recommend checking with your local library. Often they offer courses for free or cheap. Once you have a bit of knowledge, then you can go on various excel forums and ask “I want to do this, how do I do it?” Or if you have set of data like Sandi has, you can ask “what can I do with this data? How can I use excel to analyze it better?” I’m happy to help with questions. Feel free to ask! But it’s hard to tell you or show you what you need to learn or know, especially if you don’t have much experience with excel or you don’t have something you want to do, or data to analyze. I’ll see if I can find a decent KZbin or website course to go through though 🙂.
@lynxacres1293
@lynxacres1293 5 жыл бұрын
Pendlera I think one of the things in excel that get underutilized the most is tables, especially for large sets of data. With Tables you can sort each column, you can use apply formulas for the whole table very quickly, you can filter. Tables are Awesome. Also, just having a set of data with a lot of columns, and headers, and data, something that looks like a table, doesn’t make it a table. You need to format it as a table. And then you can start having fun with it 😁

If you want to make it faster to widen your columns in excel for viewing just click the arrow in the upper left corner of the spreadsheet and it will highlight everything and then just double click on a column header separator that your manually dragging to widen the column (IE:line between A1 & B1) at the top and it will open them all to the widest they need to be for the most data in the column and wont change the empty columns. You can do the same thing for rows if data is cutting off visually.

We had a great time working to apply what we had learned and seeing the sheep body structure and weight build. We checked the back straps fill out aboue the spin bone ridge. We would go to the fair and groom our sheep for the group section judgment won second place in our group. Great times in memory.

@@SandiBrock Was the goal to form a coop or to be a really successful farmer? Either one, I wish you well. I wanted to be a farmer/rancher, but after I looked at the numbers I decided the burden was too much to bear. Now, if I had inherited land and some equipment it would have been a lot more doable. I could have also married into a rich family. Neither happened, so I became a teacher. The only growing I try to do is related to the minds of my students. Nice video, well presented. If you have enough data (I guess you will after some cycles) , you should go for a kind of breeding value estimation or build an index combining littersize and adg. However, selection to increase prolificacy, based on the observed litter size, might be blurred with the hormonal treatment of the ewes.

Just rewatched this one. This is where the Suffolk ewe lambs came from that didn't conceive on your last breeding group? Just a question on the report you built that you could answer in your next replacement ewe lamb selection - you selected the dam and only her ear tag number shows on the report. You might know by the numbers where she originated - where you purchased her from or if she is home bred but we don't and I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to know and I would have also thought her sire would be important - Rideau? and if not Rideau, why not?

Hey Shawn, Rebecca is right. My vaccination schedule is very custom made for my flock... I would talk to a vet, even just a phone call to get an idea of what to do, when.
