Props to you! I’m a Navajo (From Arizona) and we are traditionally sheep herders. My grandparents were one of the last generations to be full time. I totally remember them going out to the corral every few hours throughout the night and bring in newborns if their mother didn’t hv milk yet or if it was too cold. It would smell like a barn in the house during lambing season. Us grandkids would have to grab all the babies before the mothers went out to pasture every morning. So much memories! Great job!!

Hi Sandi Pregnancy toxaemia, our experience is ewes getting too heavy in early pregnancy & then of course struggling in late pregnancy to keep multiple lambs going. I would suggest feeding less to ewes in their first trimester. Would love to see other people's comments on this. As usual great vlog! 👍

With breaks that high, I’ve found it’s best to try and stabilize the leg from above the break. I usually take curved pieces around the break, and then take a long flat piece (like a tongue depressor) along the outside of the leg and as high as I can make it while bridging the break. The curved pieces need to fit very well (I actually like to use the cardboard tubes that the vet wrap comes in) Generally, if you place your hand on the lambs knee and try to rotate the foot a bit, you’ll be able to feel if the leg below the break is rotating independently of the rest of the leg. I’ve messed up a few breaks like that, and while they survived they were pretty limpy for the rest of their lives.

Were you able to salvage any of the damp hay from the broken wagons? I'm so sorry about the preemies and sick mamas. Try to take comfort from doing the very best you can with the information you've been given or dug up for yourself. There will be bad times but on the whole, things are gradually looking up as you gain experience and assemble the information you need. I'm really enjoying your vlogs and learning lots of new stuff. How do you cope emotionally when there is a death of a lamb? It affects me just watching. I can't imagine being right there with all the love you have for these animals. Do you give the lamb pain meds when you have a break, or is it better for the lamb to just have it wrapped and then let it be? It wasn't crying, but breaks hurt, the poor thing. With as little as these lambs are, the ewes could easily step on them. I wonder if that is what happened? It is wonderful seeing how much love and care you give the sheep. Thank you for giving us a look into your family's life on the farm.

They could have toxoplasmosis. We’ve come down with it really bad this year!! Lost nearly half of the flock of lambs. They’ll die quickly so keep an eye out on them.
@victoriacrabb26395 жыл бұрын
BWM yes it is!! Transferred through hay. When the cats poo on the hay and then goes to the ewes or rams for food it can cause them to start lambing early and have runts that won’t live. And they’ll all be like that. We’ve had it really bad this year and to the point that we nearly got rid of the whole flock and start new!! We didn’t and so far we have injected all of the ewes and lambs that have survived!!

So your issues with pregnancy toxemia do you figure it was a feed issue? Or was there something else at play there?
@hj56605 жыл бұрын
Its mostly feed They need in the last months of pregnancy alot of sugar like feed We here give them dates honey = the honey like thing that comes out when you squeeze dates It doesn't help when thry are fat too This toximoa mostly happens to fat sheep

I would with a facility like that keep a couple of hundred free run chicken for the meat when your sheep are outside. Small roosters grow quickly and they only need vitamines and growing meal. You could slaughter them yourself and sell them in the city. That meat is good. We had good experience with it. They need to kept out of the draft to prevent them of getting snot. Most of the farmers in my family did that.
