Wow. I know I’m 5 years late here. But you have been the most informative channel to cover the A7iii menu that I’ve found here on KZbin. As an absolute beginner, thank you for elaborating on every single aspect in the menu, as it really helps me understand what purpose they serve and to decide which preferences are right for me. A lot of channels are great in explaining the menus, but they often skip over half the options, and just say “set this one to “on” and set this one at “auto”” etc. without telling the viewer why they choose those settings. Thank you, Mike! I’ll be exploring all of your other guide videos on the A7iii with great appreciation!

Excellent. So far, after having gone through 10 such videos, this is by far the best, the most useful, and user-friendly. He explains almost every single option, its function and its need. Most people just gloss over. And, personally I do not like people waving their arms and hands in front of me, talking rapidly and loudly like they are over-caffeinated. Such videos I shut off after 2 seconds. This person focuses his videos on the information, not himself. The voice is soft and steady and the viewer is able to understand the information being presented without getting distracted by theatrics. Thank you Mike.

Mike, like many of the other commenters on here, I've had my a7iii for a few months without properly diving into all the settings. As an Apple addict, I find Sony's menu system quite intimidating and unintuitive, almost like going back to DOS! Fantastic content, super clear, amazingly helpful - I feel like I'm now able to make the most of this sensational camera. Thanks a mill, and please keep it up.

Another good tuitional video. I shoot wildlife almost exclusively and have my A7III (and A7II) set to manual with auto ISO. I generally shoot stationary mamals/birds at f5.6/f8 but it's easy enough to change the aperture. I will also set out with a shutter speed of at least 1/250th, but with good light I will use 1/500th as a baseline. I tend to use the two presets on the top function dial for birds/insects in flight. I have one set up for 1/2500th, f8, lock on AF wide, and the other preset is set at 1/1600th for overcast skies in order to keep ISO as low as possible. I also preset exposure compensation and adjust it as necessary. Using the presets means fewer missed shots.

@@mikesphotography. I have a Sony 100 - 400mm G Master on my A7III (I will purchase a Sony 1.4 TC in the new year) and a Sony 90mm macro on my A7II. I find that I do not require anything else. My previous system comprised a Nikon D500 and Olympus EM1 mark II, a Nikkor 200 - 500mm, Nikkor 300mm PF ED VR + Nikkor TC14EIII, Sigma 180mm macro, Olympus 300mm + Oly 1.4TC and an Oly 12 - 100mm. It was a fabulous system but became cripplingly heavy after 17 months of walking about 7 hours a day, 5 days a week.
@mikesphotography6 жыл бұрын
Wow! Your older system sounded amazing but also amazingly heavy!! Can you get everything you need with the new lighter package!? I had a play with the 100-400gm at the weekend and it’s a really nice lens. Amazing light for what it does!
@klackon16 жыл бұрын
@@mikesphotography.It works for me, Mike. The full format allows for reasonable cropping and the addition of the 1.4TC will cater for longer range subjects. The fact that there is no crop factor makes the 100 - 400mm quite versatile for subjects which are reasonably close. The 90mm macro is superb and so much lighter than the Sigma 180mm, so I can now take handheld shots. It would be brilliant to be able to afford the Sony 400mm f2.8, but it's out of my price range and is also rather heavy to lugg about for 7 hours.

Hello Mike! I always love your video. I have an idea for a video you might want to do? I’m have a shoot to do for a church group photo. I need to get into focus about 300 people. I don’t think the eye focus would work? Lol! I’ve been practicing how to get everybody in sharp focus. Your help would be great. Also this will be shot outside high noon sun behind me and facing the members. Thanks!
@mikesphotography4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Ralph! Ah, that sounds like a challenging shoot...Is it flexible in which way they will be facing? If so I'd really push for a different position or time of day. Sun in the faces of your subjects is always tricky as they will tend to feel uncomfortable looking towards the sun and some will start to squint...If you can change that, I'd get them all in a position to use the sun as a hair light, hire some big lights if at all possible and flash at full power to overpower the sun. Or if you cant get any lights or change the location, maybe change the time to get a more preferable angle of light? As for getting them in focus, close the aperture down...I'd be shooting that at f8 at the widest...

Hi Mike - Great video, i am new a73 user and your video not only helped me in understanding how to setup but also helped me in understanding the various options and their meaning and usage. However i still have a few questions. - why to keep aspect ratio 3:2 but not 16:9? - why you kept dro off but not auto? - in what conditions you would turn ibis off? And why? - in what conditions you would use mf but not af and why? - in what conditions you would turn zebra off and why?
@mikesphotography6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I’m glad it helped! 3:2 uses all of the sensor and 16:9 crops it, so you have a drop in megapixels. I’ve never had dro on...I think it only affects jpegs. I generally turn ibis off when shooting from a tripod. Manual focus is good for when you set your focus point and then it doesn’t change. Autofocus when tracking subjects or when they move a lot, or when shooting events when I move around a lot. I generally keep zebras on all the time. I hope that helps! 👍

I would just like to know what are you using to record your camera screen at that distance. What camera and lens?
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
No worries. I have my a7rii in crop mode 4K, with the batis 25mm about 20cm behind the a7iii. The batis has a really close minimum focus distance which means I can get it close enough to get this shot. Then I think I have the aperture about f4 so the focal plane isn’t too shallow...and then I light it will an led panel from above. I hope that helps. 👍

Thanks so much Mike for your professional tutorial as usual. I am wounding if you have made a similar video for setting a7iii for videography? Also dose the the same custom key be programmed for different shortcuts if switching between both modes (I.e. photo/video)? Thanks in advance.
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
No worries Waleed, I hope they are helping! With the custom keys, you'll notice that there are two different custom key settings in tab 2 page 8/9, the top one is for photo and the second one down is for video. Here's the link to my A7iii video settings: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bYDdl2ytq8yGgMU I also have set up a page on my website with all the links to all of my videos and tutorials in alphabetical order and broken down into different genres: www.boxheadmike.com/youtubelinks/ I hope that helps! 😁👍

All available on the A7rIII also. Manual is King! I never use auto anymore... For over 4 years.

Exactly! It is great that the manufacturers tend to follow the same menu layout between the different camera models. Great to hear you're off auto...although some of the semi auto modes are good for shooting sports or fast paced/spontaneous shooting. Thanks for watching! 😁👍

Is there any way to disable the proximity sensor at the viewfinder? I find it quite annoying when the screen is turn off automatically when it been accidentally covered by my strap. Thanks.
@JeffBourke5 жыл бұрын
You can pull the screen out slightly from being flush in the seated position - this will disable the prox sensor.
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
Like Jeff said, you can pull the screen out slightly, or in tab 2 6/9 go to finder/monitor and set it to manual. Then assign a button to finder/monitor toggle in the custom setup setting in tab 2 8/9. I hope that helps! 😁👍

Hi Mike. Only 2 questions: why compressed raw and why sRGB? Usually, I shooting in uncompressed raw for the maximum quality and RGB to capture more color gamma. Thank you.
@mikesphotography4 жыл бұрын
That's a good couple of questions. I've done videos on both of these settings in the past...I'll link them below... Basically sRGB only seems to affect jpegs...as RAW files bring in all the data, all of the colour data is still there and then the computer will assign a profile to it depending on which one you have selected. As for compressed or uncompressed, I found that it only made a real difference when I was 5 stops under exposed...and if any one is that far out, they really need to go on a photography lesson! Here's the Colour space video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWmYkp9rq5abrpo And here's the RAW files video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6a5eHeaaLhsi5o I hope that helps. 👍

Hi Mike: Is there any functionality within a Sony A7iii that would display where the focus point was on an image when viewing through image play-back? On my wife's Olympus M1 Mark iii a green square appears on the playback to show exactly where the focus point was engaged. Also Nikon has this in their Nikon View NX software. Any ideas? Thanks, Keith

That sounds strange...you might have to get in contact with Sony to see if they can help. What do you see compared to what your photos come out as? Under/over exposed and what does your built in light meter say?
@aaronrivera175 жыл бұрын
I think when shooting fast moving objects its best To shoot in shutter priority.
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
Hi Aaron, It all depends on the look you’re going for. If you want to freeze the action, shutter priority is definitely a good option. If there’s loads of light and I want to switch between shots with motion blur and ones without, I’ll keep it in aperture priority and then change the aperture to manipulate my shutterspeeds.

I just recently upgraded from an a6000 to an a6600 (at $998.00) and this was very helpful in reviewing settings. Most tutorials are video-centric created _by_ content creators _for_ content creators. I really wanted photo settings for landscapes, architecture and street genres. I'm looking forward to exploring custom settings and trying back button focusing. Every one of your videos is a condensed master class - thanks Mike! edit: Would you consider a very short video pointing out how you set your custom keys for your a6600, and link it to this one?

Hi! I've got question: is it possible to use a different time out for the electronic view finder and the display? I would like to use the EVF as a direct viewing device and use the main display to review a picture I took. Now the pictures stays in the EVF for a second or 2, which is impractical for me.
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately not. The only way to use both is to have it on automatic, so the sensor knows when you're looking through the viewfinder, but there is only one setting for the review.

A beautifully judged video. Cool, calm and collected. I've just gone mirror-less onto A7 iii and found your guidance most helpful, thanks. But I'm having problems using a Godox TT350s since I usually shot flash in full camera manual mode as I control everything that way. But Godox doesn't seem to work for me. Any guidance much appreciated.
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much David! I haven’t had the chance to use the godox tt350s yet. When I shoot with a flash, I make sure everything is in manual, even on the flash. Do you normally have flash on ttl or manual as well?
@davidbridgewater50845 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, Mike. I had so much to work through on the A7 iii menu that I had lost sight of what I should do. I needed a good clear response and you gave it to me. And I'm still appreciating the detailed, measured way you take us through the A7 menu. Excellent.
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
No worries David, I’m glad I could help! The menus are definitely challenging to get through and that’s the thing with these modern cameras. I use them every day and I still forget where certain things are when I haven’t used that certain function in a while!! 😁👍

Hi Mike, excellent demonstration! I have a question; when Touch operation is in effect, I dislike the "grey brackett" being moved looking for the touch focussing. Can't you change the "brackett" color to "Red"? At some point, during your earlier parts of this video training I saw this "yellow brackett" but, all of a sudden I got, "grey color" of the bracket. thanks.
@mikesphotography4 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much. Unfortunately not, the grey focussing square is really annoying and they have only updated this in the most recent cameras. The reason it turned a different colour was when I was moving it around with it being selected in focus settings. As soon as you come out of that setting, it goes back to grey. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Great tutorial Mike....I noticed you AF Track Sens you have set to 5. I have mine set to 2 so that it has better lock-on power to the object of interest. Is there alternative thinking for setting to 5? Also, you mention that half a shutter press will LOCK exposure when AEL w/shutter is on. I presume that it re-reads the exposure or does it just lock it to what exposure you have adjusted too? And does it release and relock the exposure when the shutter is pressed a second time? Cheers
@mikesphotography6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Craig! When tracking things the af track sens is much better in the lower numbers, this is more for general shooting. I’m going to make some videos on setting in more specific environments like sports, portraits etc in the new year...but I definitely agree with you in having lower numbers when tracking subjects. I really like locking my exposure so I get a consistent exposure in a sequence so that’s why I have exposure lock on shutter. There’s been the odd occasion where it’s not helped but most of the time it works for me. It keeps the exposure locked until you release the button completely. I hope that’s answered your questions. 👍

Very well explained and it's interesting to know how a professional does the settings on his camera. I just bought this camera and it seems to have much more in details and quality comparing to Sony Alpha 77M2. But, its also have some features less. Would have been nicer for beginners to have some explanations on some details you say you do not use. As you said, it is about how you use it, yet I think with just a little more, it would have been even better, Over all I liked a lot! Thank you for the great job.

Thanks Ramin. I'm hoping to do a beginner course really soon to fill that gap. This was more of an overview of how I set my camera up but great to get some feedback so I can make my videos as good as they can be in the future. 😁👍
