From what I've learned, personal property (truck camper, personal trailer, etc) is NOT covered by a commercial policy unless specifically declared. I've added my truck camper and enclosed utility trailer to my commercial policy. And, yes, insuring a Class 5 truck is not cheap. I can't recategorize as an RV because I use my truck without the camper way too much.

I didn't get the impression that this would change that feature. We still have a separate travel trailer policy. And we do take the camper off any time we're staying at a place more than a week or so. I'm going to recheck with FCIS to officially clarify. Thanks for the comment!

I too have a separate policy for my truck camper. One for when it's on the truck (commercial) and one for when it's off the truck. I'm interested to hear feedback from FCIS as my Progressive policy renews next month.

I sent the questions this morning so hoping to hear later today. Will definitely keep you in the loop!

Wow thats quite a savings ! Yes commercial truck insurance is very expensive, as a company owner, it's a large portion of our cost overhead.

No wonder it costs so much to get things shipped in the US! But we're grateful for folks like you who have figured out what's needed to get the job done.

Great video! I'm not full-time in Alabama , 2015 Ram 5500 pay $1800 year just for truck, camper "supposed to be covered" under truck policy! I will check at FCIS to cover both. Thanks for the great information. Be safe and have fun!

It never hurts to check - let me know how it goes for you! Let them know we sent ya!

For focus to insure at a motor home is your truck still covered when your driving it with the camper off the vehicle?
@TheJoslynJourneyАй бұрын
Yes. They are two separate policies, but with the added rider for liability when attached.
@caseyprice9918Ай бұрын
Do you guys have a daily commuter(motorcycle or other car) besides the RAM 5500? I am planning a similar build and FCIS said they couldn't insure without me having a separate daily commuter other than the truck.
@caseyprice9918Ай бұрын
For additional context. I told them I would be removing the Host periodically to use the truck for "around town" driving, to which they told me it would not be eligible for insurance as an "RV" as the Host would have to be permanently fixed to the truck for that classification. Looks like you are already double verifying your policy, but there may still be some holes in it if your use-case doesn't align perfectly with the underwriters understanding.

Hmmm.... perhaps that's why they're taking a bit longer to get back to me on my questions! We have ebikes as our commuter "vehicles". Not sure if that will count. We mentioned the fact that we take our camper off the truck when we got the insurance, but perhaps that comment was overlooked. Either way, we'll put a video of our update once we hear back from them.

Hello, wonderful video and great information. I’ve bookmarked this for future reference ❤. Can you elaborate on the “Recategorized as an RV” part? Perhaps that’s a video on its own. What exactly does that entail? Paperwork only or something beyond that like DPW or OMV paperwork? And what is the effect for the vehicle when you remove the camper from the truck? Are either part uninsured when separate? Can you drive the truck as a daily driver without the camper? And does this Recategorized to be an RV effect selling the vehicle part or if you replace the vehicle in the future? Would this just be viable for Full-time and or is it applicable for part-time RVers? I’ve also heard there are issues taking these 550/5500 truck campers across the us/mexican border because they are not RVs, would this possibly solve that issue? Again awesome information. Thank you.

Glad you thought the video was helpful, and you have some great questions. As far as the conversion goes, the only paperwork that changed was the insurance side, nothing else (so very easy). I am checking on the other questions directly with FCIS since I *thought* I knew the answers, but now I'm second-guessing myself. I believe they are fine separate since you still have two separate policies. I'm also checking on the Mexico thing, but I'm thinking that might just give you some additional documentation to try and help "convince" the border patrol agent to recategorize in Mexico. My guess is that you still may need to "help" that along at the border. But I'll be back with some more concrete answers!

not sure offering this sort of advise in this format is a good idea. i hope yoi never fimd out it was a mistake

All of our videos are to provide information on what we've learned - good or bad. We make mistakes all the time, but we try to be open enough to share them to prevent others. If I had that philosophy, I'd never put out a video, ha!
