Achilles Tendonitis is a problem that can persist. Rest and ice is great, but your problem can resurface. I have found that athletic tape - a very old, and time tested method - is still the best ... and least it has been for me. Learn how to tape you ankle quickly and effectively, by yourself (without the need of a trainer).

I started doing calf raises and one leg calf raises. Also I walk backwards for about 20mins daily. That has minimized the pain day by day. I can feel the pain slowly going away.

@jeromep4148 I wanted to thank you for taking the time to create this video. I'm 46 and I absolutely love basketball and I play it 3-4 times a week. A few weeks ago, for the first time in my life I started to feel some pain in my Achilles. Ever since it's been a mad scramble of trial and error trying to find a solution. I started to get a bit depressed thinking that I would have to give up playing. Your simple taping technique has made a world of difference. Thanks again buddy!

I have chronic Achilles insertional tendonitis. I am an athlete and runner. The pain is pretty bad. I’ve picked up pickleball about a year ago and my Achilles have been aching. I can hardly walk in the morning. I went to a podiatrist, inserts, brace, massage, eccentrics and still the same. I have been doing this taping method for a week and I am not miserable after playing. Totally agree with the taping method as I can only imagine how those sports where you're launching and changing directions quickly would aggravate the heck out of the achilles. I have chronic tendinopathy in both ankles and only after a year and a half, I am steadily improving through a multi pronged approach. Home use of a massage gun, hand massage, gentle stretches but most importantly plenty of calf raises and farmers walking. I now do about 400 raises a day and now I walk with 33 pound dumbells for a long distances including up hills. It's all about forcing the tendons to normalize and heal and I believe it is possible at any age to achieve this as long as the approach is steady and not overloading the tendons too early.

Hi Jerome, Thank you for showing how you tape your lower legs and feet as well as the products you use. I've had chronic Achilles tendonitis for many years in both legs. I'll try taping my feet again but the way you've done it. The interesting thing that I've also found is there is a bizarre connection for me between my feet and my neck. If my neck hurts at all, I will have a bad day with my Achilles tendonitis; conversely if my neck does not hurt, then no problems with Achilles. I get botox in my head and neck for migraines and if I don't receive enough in my neck, I get terrible migraines as well as Achilles pain. Like I said it's bizarre, but for me that connection is there. I live in a dry climate so hopefully I can get some of the eco-flex tape. Thank you once again!!!

Thanks for this. I have had tendonitis in the past where the only cure has been rest. The cause was overuse and not resting enough. I tried your taping technique on a couple of runs a few weeks ago but I was probably coming back too soon. I do think the taping reduced the amount of extra damage I was causing but decided to just bear it out and not run for a few more weeks ( difficult as us runners are paranoid we will lose all our fitness!) until the pain went down. Luckily my other tendon is fine so was able to compare against that. I did keep on walking though and just had to get through those first few minutes of walking. The pain went from 3/10 to 2/10 then 1/10 then probably 0.5/10. Until it seemed like zero. So unless my body was going to play a cruel trick, I taped up and ran a reasonable 5k out and back run. At the turnaround point, it was very tempting to extend it to my 10k route but thought why risk it? So I completed the 5K and it is absolutely fine. 10k next in a few days - then if that is ok, I'll do my 10 miles at the weekend. I'll tape them all. My only criticism is that it can feel a bit like a brake on my running pace at first. So I would hope at some point I can run without the tape.

Thanks for posting this video. I never would have considered tape if not for this video. My story is similar - I did icing, rest, NSAIDs - only to find that rest is notoriously ineffective for Achilles (studies show this! - why do they still recommend it?) I have tried the heel lift exercises. Helpful, but didn't get me back in running shoes. (Studies show three sets of 15 reps 3x/day will actually make a difference for the vast majority of folks. Not for me!) I did the cross friction massage. Helpful, but didn't get me back in running shoes. I did the "crystal" type thing - i bought one in stainless- and essentially, under pressure, drug it's various surfaces up the Achilles several times each day per PT recommendation. Helpful, but did not get me back in running shoes. I did ultrasound therapy. Helpful, but didn't get me back in running shoes. (studies show ultrasound can help with quality of the fiber/repairs during healing). I did exercises to strengthen the arches of my feet. Very helpful in stabilizing my foot strike but didn't get me back in running shoes. I corrected my running form! (I was going deep to put this to bed.) Very helpful, didn't get me back in running shoes. (Did fix another nagging issue though!) I changed running shoes, three times - only to go back to the original because that pair was the last pair I was running pain-free in. I also did voodoo band work. Very helpful, but didn't get me back in the running shoes. I gave up and taped due to this video. I taped differently though. I taped 'around' the Achilles. i.e. taping from ankle, around achilles, to other ankle from just above the sole of my foot to 2-2.5 inches above the ankle. No tape on the front of my ankle or leg and none on my foot, at all, but overlapping layers all the way up. (The tape has got to really seriously STICK and has to have some body for this to work.) I did that for two days 24 hours per day. The pain relief at 24 hours was stunning. At 48 hours, I was back in running shoes, pain free after MONTHS trying all the above. (I will keep doing the heel lifts, the arch strengthening, cross friction massage and voodoo band work, to try and get permanently beyond this but the taping.... amazing. I never would have believed ---> Tape!! Even writing this, that just seems stupid - but the pain-free step out of bed the last two days and the pain-free run this morning says it works. Bonkers.) Thank you for taking the time to do this video. Edited: added voodoo band (forgot that and it was important)

Hello long time runner here. I have had a severe Achilles Tendonitis back in 2018, and it became a chronic issue up to this day. I was 38 when I got it, I am 44 now. Tried a lot if things, Physios, even the machine you have :) lots of treatment and exercises but it was never corrected. Starting two weeks ago I stated kinesio taping just like you suggested and within two weeks it works like magic. Don't get me wrong, probably just like you suggested regular taping would work too, but I took my chances with a rocktape. At least in the morning I do not feel the stiffness and taking the first 4-5 steps are not painful anymore. Thanks a lot for the advice 🙂👍Very much appreciated.

That’s great to hear you came up with an approach that is providing help. Just don’t let the problem persist long term (it does need to eventually “go away”). For me , it seemed like the longer the inflammation persisted, the longer it took to go away. I have heard people say it took them years!!

@@jeromep4148 True, it takes a while. Unfortunately it is an injury that doesn't simply go away if you stop doing what you are doing or exercising. It actually gets worse if you don't use your archives tendon at all, unless of course you rupture it completely which is the last stop in this journey 😄It is not a simple injury in that sense, that you have keep doing some kind of moderate exercise while not making it worse 🤓

This is a great way to get some relief. However, there are great physical therapy interventions to help any type of tendinitis like issues as it is when the amount of muscular use has exceeded the capacity of they local muscle tissue for long term results. There are specific isometric exercises (ie. volume, duration and rest parameters to name a few) that help address lower extremity tendinitis as well as implementation of progressive overloading training patterns that can help one get back to sport symptom free or for every day. When the capacity of the respective tissue source(s) exceed the demands of what the person places on it, there is no more tendinitis.

I too suffered for a couple years now with achilles tendonitis - I play soccer, and the the day after a game I can barely walk, and it would take the rest of the week for it to recover, and i'd be good to go by the next game - and repeat. I tried taping with KT tape 2 weeks ago, and it helped - I was able to recover quicker than normal, but was still sore for a couple days after. This week, I tried your taping technique, and the very next day, I had little to no pain, so a drastic improvement. So thank you so much! I might even be able to play more than once a week now. One question, I found it difficult to stretch my calves with the tape on, and felt a bit of cramping there. Do you stretch before putting the tape on? or are there any good methods to stretch with the tape on?
@jeromep4148
@jeromep4148 Жыл бұрын
It seems almost impossible to stretch when taped up. I stretch a bit before taping. I have never big on stretching when cold, so I tend to stretch after activity more than before activity. Not saying my approach is the best, it’s just how I do it. Be careful ramping up your activity. The ideal approach is that the Achilles heals and you abound on the need for taping altogether.

I took a year off last year after nine years of cheerleading and that’s when my pain began in my right Achilles. This is my 2nd season off and now I am debating whether or not I should go back to cheer and do a bunch of crazy flips, because after excessive research, I believe I’m in pain because the Achilles is not getting enough load like it was getting a few years ago. The tape helps me with the most support until it ends up loosening up and then i will have to stop what I’m doing and rewrap because the pain begins to come back. I have not tried wrapping your way but I will try next time. I have tried a compression sock with elastic straps attached to it. The thing with that is the straps eventually become weak having me to wrap my ankle super tight to feel the affect then my foot goes numb because it’s not getting any blood. Im on the couch right now with a heating pad on. My drs appointment is coming up and I will be sure not to cancel it after canceling 3 already. I am not going to do physical therapy and am going to see if I can get an mri right away. This tendinitis makes me feel like I’m trapped inside my body. I’m 21 and it feels like I am going to have this for the rest of my life. If you have any recommendations for tennis shoes I would appreciate it thanks

This injury is frustrating however, I find it very hard to measure progress, which also makes it hard to evaluate solutions with any level of certainty. That's OK if that's all you have...KT-Tape is much better and you only need one long piece and a short cross piece where the ankle hollows. You "must-have" proper tension all the time. I call games alone for senior men's ball and KT "stays on for a couple of days". The white tape does not breathe and you can see the slack on the back strap with the white tape. That means it lost tension as you played and you risk re-injuring the Achillies. The KT stays on all the time when I am on the field, it's also helping the two heel bursa heal. LOTS OF ICE for the injury. Dr. Ho TENS also helps me quite a lot. It sucks getting old, body parts are worn out, and I'm a 60's model.
