How to achieve a natural 2 tone camo effect on a self bow. This video covers how to shellac a bow, as well as staining with dyer's polypore and other natural materials. If you'd rather use a more available stain, my favorites are leather dye and aniline dye.
Featuring music by my awesome cousin, guitarist Marcos Topolanski Quintero. You can find more of his work on iTunes and Spotify.

i love all the natural dyes, i never knew all it takes is just smearing flowers or mushrooms into something would dye it, i figured you'd need to dehydrate and then process them into a paste or something
@DanSantanaBows
@DanSantanaBows Ай бұрын
@@MgFalcon Of course not everything is colorfast with this method so it’s worth trying samples in advance. Most of the methods you see for dye or stain production are designed for textiles. With wood you don’t always need to extract the pigment just to concentrate it again later. With some sources the pigment is already concentrated and pure enough right in the source

As a woodworker, I love using shellac as a finish, but I never use it on anything that comes in contact w water due to its permeability. Is that the main reason you use the wax afterwards? Curious as to your thought process. Thanks
@DanSantanaBows
@DanSantanaBows Ай бұрын
The whole shellac water panic comes from the furniture world. If you have a cold drink trapping moisture for an extended period of time the shellac will go milky. No big deal to fix Anyway you can go out in the pouring rain and be relaxed about water droplets. As long as you generally wipe them off once in a while it’s fine. I’m not completely flippant about water but the issue is way overblown. And yes, a bit of wax helps the water bead up even more

@@DanSantanaBowsDan, how is it that you “fix”t rapped moisture as mentioned? Great videos!

@ Just dissolve the finish with a layer of alcohol, or a new layer of shellac

I wonder what you would do with the greenish coloured piece of wood. I found a lot of this stuff this year and try to stabilize it with various agents. I also have dust that came from sawing it, and i kept it but i dont know how to use it for staining, so I am interested in the way you would use it in general. When I put a piece of it in a shellac solution to stabilize it, the solution became green. So maybe it would be a way to solve the green colorants with alcohol for a natural green satining. Just some first thoughts on this.

I wondered if a shorter bow from “ironwood” would be possible?
@DanSantanaBows
@DanSantanaBows Ай бұрын
@@stevebostic9812 You can make short bows from any species. What changes between species is mostly width. That said when you run out of width you have to start making bows longer

Is Danish oil a good finish for Bows? I know it's excellent for other woodworking projects, But partially because the oils soak into the wood, and crystallize.
@DanSantanaBows
@DanSantanaBows Ай бұрын
Yeah it’s perfectly fine if you like danish oil. See my finishes video for more ideas. Most woodworking finishes are more than ok, depending on the kind of protection you want

@jonathanbennison9220 Ай бұрын
@DanSantanaBows Thank you. Excellent. I wasn't sure if the crystals in the cured Danish oil, might not be ideal in a flexible woodworking such as a bow, Or might be less effective, compromised by the flexible use of the bow.
