Thanks Dan for the great content, very well explained. Another way you could explain the issue is by talking about weak sections. As a width or thickness translates up or down it will change the cross section area of the bow wood. Once you have a greater difference in cross section area in a short distance along the bow you have created a weak section. The load passing through that area will be focused in the weak section as its surrounding is much stronger. With that said I also think it is important to talk about the increased strength in bending when having a thickness rather than a width, as with the handle. And that the slope from the handle thickness need to be spread out like 5 to 1 but the width could be sloped a bit quicker as it wont affect the strength as much. Though all sudden changes will attract tension so allways better to try to use a 5 to 1 ratio just to be sure.

I would love to know where u got that draw knife. I been debating trying to make one out of an old ferrier rasp. But that "timber framing" draw knife? Looks awesome to use! There is a new company that makes a tool handle system that u can set to either static or free moving.. so u can put em on rasps and draw knife. I saw it from a video that wood for wright did. It was a stupid looking purple plastic handle but cool concept to check out

This video is very helpful for me. I practice archery and I am practicing to make my own bow for the first time. I started with an Osage branch but I should have practiced with another wood because I ruined the Osage; I think I heated one tip too much with steam to straighten it and when I stretched it to test it, some fibers opened. I glued it and I am removing wood to lower its power and not lose all the work. I live in Argentina, what wood can I use? I have seen that you can use Ash, do you make good bows with this wood? They grow a lot of them here. In Brazil they use wood from a tree called Ipe for bows, which in my country they call Lapacho and I want to try if it works; it is a semi-hard wood. Thanks!
@DanSantanaBows11 күн бұрын
@@Raul_Herrera Osage is very good if you can find more. Ash is excellent, you can treat it like any whitewood. If you have access to ipe it’s a phenomenal choice too. Also see if you can find any more information about what locals used in the past. I know ipe was popular

Any advice for hackberry or ash? Which would be better and what kind of back would you use, as well as bow shape? Coming from a beginner with access to those woods
@DanSantanaBows14 күн бұрын
You can treat them like other whitewoods. Use a natural back with the outermost growth ring and a flatbow shape like in the board bow tutorial. wider if you make a shorter bow. Heat treating will help keep set down

I once read an article with an accompanying data sheet that ranked Golden Birch (yellow birch, silver birch) as one of the woods with the highest tortion strengths, just behind hickory, but well above maples and oaks. This was in the context of use for axe handles, but I'm curious about it's application to bows. Again, golden birch happened to rank very differently from white birch, which was lower that the hard maples.
