Quick mixing tip: If you put your delay on a bus you can then send that delay to a reverb. This will help your delay blend better within the mix.

Although it is an older video, I just watched it very carefully. What you explain here seems extremely helpful to me and I will try it out directly. In particular, I find the creation of a blank template useful, it saves a lot of time and gives a clear structure. Thank you very much, I hope you are doing well. Many greetings from Germany 🎸🎧🙋‍♂️

funny thing: I occasionally whatch tutorials ..just in case someone does something I haven't thought of doing yet myself.. even after having done about 25 years of audio engineering /recording/prodcution etc.. I still think it's never to late to learn new things... but the funny thing about this video is: this is literally exactly the way I set up my mixing sessions! the only difference is :I work in Logic and I use different colours to amrk the different groups of instruments.. now I am off to check out video number two.. who knows maybe there is something I didn't know yet..

Thanks Joe. From this example, I normally add VCAs to each of the channels going to a bus, to adjust faders relatively, before the bus, to make sure the input of the bus plugins are not above their distortion levels (or find the sweet-spot).

Totally valid approach. I would just rather turn the channels themselves down, but I'm sure VCA's make that a little easier?

hey, i think it would be really useful if you made a video showing a kind of arrangement checklist. Meaning, we get so much mixing advice on KZbin but I'm starting to realize more that the arrangement is even more important than the mix, if you could show like making sure all frequencies are covered, creating space and fullness basically everything you need to get right in the production to be able to then get a killer mix

Organize your tracks as you record them. I tend to put everything in a rough-rough mix with no busses until I get ready to really mix. When you have sort of roughs before you begin mixing, it helps give you an idea of where to start. The other trick is to do this on crappy speakers first. When you throw it up on the good ones you can set busses and solo each track/group that's relevant for EQ. Absolutely use buses!!! However, I am kinda old school and use a lot of outboard gear to try and get great capture on the front end. Also add some tape compression or remix through an analog tube PRE for a more classic sound. The best sound is recording on tape then transferring to a DAW for edit . Just advice from an old mix/edit engineer. Please keep your hateful youtube comments to yourself. THANKS! -Ltb!

Having your own templates is a total time saver. I take it a step further and also have channels for drum kit, vocals, guitar and bass ready to go with my preferred FX chains on each. If I have a bunch of raw tracks, I can just import them into the region list in PT and then drag them onto my template channels. As I tweak my workflow and plugins, I find myself updating my templates every few months or so.

Very helpful information! I go about things a little differently, but still probably end up with the same results. I tend to set up my buses and organize my tracks as I'm recording so that when I'm ready to attempt the mix all the administrative work is already done. It does slow up the recording process a little, but it works for me.

Thanks Joe! I took away some great notes from this video! I'm just getting to the point where I'm seeing the huge value in working with a system and being organized before mixing, but I haven't made a template for myself yet. Your template gave me some great ideas so I can get started! Much appreciation, sir!

Nicely done teacher, I have a chromatic color code for my tracks, Red drums, violet bass, blue rythm guitars, green acoustic g, yellow lead guitars, orange midi instruments, brown any other (violin, flute, etc), white for vocals, dark gray busses, light gray effects, and black for master fader. And pretty much I record them in that specific order.

Awesome video. I do something similar but I have blank audio tracks, color coded, grouped, and routed, already in my template. I just drag and drop the audio tracks that are given to me into the template and move the audio clips to the corresponding tracks. If I need more background vocal tracks for example, I just duplicate one that's already there and drag the clip into it. This saves even more time on the "nerdy" stuff.. haha.

Why do you use effects on buses? I do all the FX processing as inserts individually for each channel because I don't have to worry about bleeding that way. If I do indeed find that I want identical settings on more than one channel (which is rare), I just copy & paste. What is the advantage of using buses for you?

Great video Joe!, one additional thing I always do is removing the silences on the tracks, for some reason after doing that the arrangement looks less intimidating to me and gives me a good "eagle view" of the structure of the song...(without overdoing it of course)... but that's just me!.. Greetings.
