Oh man thank you for sharing this I have been a painter for 8 years and I’m really good at it I’ve been hired so many times but the last few shops have been a mess to work with and work for so I have recently been trying to figure out how to wing it on my own that’s how I found this video I’m inspired by your story but also just scary to try to start something with no “garuntee” but I guess there’s no garuntee being an employee either

Get your mobile setup ready and start doing work on the weekends for other small shops. Go to them and knock out the work as good as you can and as fast as you can. If some shops don’t have to much work try performance shops, tint shops, muffler shops, wheel and rim shops.... Their techs are always damaging customer vehicles and you can be the guy to call and fix minor scratches or small damage in one day. Once you build your reputation and you have steady work you bring other techs on or get a small shop within a close radius of your top three shops that hire you all the time to do work for them. Hope this helps !

I've been doing auto recon for 7 years for a company I'm thinking about going out on my own doing it for myself my question is what tools do I need
@LearnMobilePaintAndBody
@LearnMobilePaintAndBody 2 жыл бұрын
The same tools you use for auto recon company you can use once you branch out on your own? Just think of things being a mobile tech instead of full fledge auto body repair shop. If you’re great at small bumper repairs then market yourself as small repair tech for small jobs. If you’re great at fleet vehicle repairs then maybe you should market yourself to maintenance shops that service fleet vehicles and be their mobile tech. You should only use the tools you really need for your niche field. Even though the auto recon industry is huge , there is enough work right now to be a mobile tech. You could even market yourself as a mobile painter for auto body shops. Think of a temporary painter for full fledge body shops when their painter leaves or gets fired. Those shops are looking for qualified painters to fill he gap and if you advertise yourself as mobile painter you set your hours and you can charge $30-$40 per estimate hour. So if you paint a car and the estimate has 10 hours then you make $300 for that one car and you can probably knock it out in one days time. Get about 2 or 3 shops signed up and they will always keep you in their back pocket for when the time calls on you. Shops charge average $50 per hour or more and there is a shortage on labor right now in this industry so there are more than a few ways to make money even if all you have is your spray guns and hustle.

Very efficient and sprays just the same or even better than Sata guns. The pros of turbine is you won’t get water build up in your lines and it’s dry direct air coming out your hose. No oil or contamination inside your lines and no need for in line filters.

I currently use PPG. However I started with BASF , R&M Diamont... An 8oz kit ( 150+ individual bottles) with all the pearls ( 20 + bottles) in 2 oz should run no more than $5K. That setup should last you for a good 2-3 months. You will refill frequently on silvers, whites, blacks, and reds. Refill can run you couple hundred depending on how much work you put out. Usually 7% - 11% of what you bill is used for paint refills.

I'm supposed to take my Jeep Jl back to my dealer soon to have rock chips on my rear fenders and doors touched up by a mobile painter. The thing is she is only available on Thursday's and the temperature outside has been around 50ish degrees and under and their has been humidity in the 70s and up on every Thursday this far. Are mobile painter able to paint well in these conditions? I'm worried that if I take it to get painted in these conditions that the finish product won't turn out well. Any input from a professional would be awesome. Thank you for your time and assistance.
@LearnMobilePaintAndBody
@LearnMobilePaintAndBody 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Taylor, If it’s just touch up paint being applied on rock chips it can be done. Now if the color on your jeep is a metallic color then there are two things to look out for. Metallic colors tend to clump up like molasses’s in cold weather thus making the color appear darker when applied. On hot days the paint and metallics are easier to spray but on cold days you get clumps or tiger stripes when spraying. The other thing to look out for is the color match. A droplet of silver metallic paint appears much darker when doing touch up because all the metallics are clumped together versus being sprayed out of a gun and the paint gets atomized and spread out evenly. The way around this is to mix a lighter variant of your color code and apply it and check in direct sunlight and then check the color in the shadow. Humidity can affect the touch up if there is too much moisture on the rock chip and then the paint gets applied. You should always clean out any rock chip before applying touch up paint with water and soap and then wax and grease remover using a paper towel. After that make sure the rock chip is dry and maybe even use a heat gun to warm up the rock chip area to get rid of moisture if there is too much humidity. That way the paint can stick to the panel. Hope this helps! Thanks for your support!

We all have to start somewhere so don’t ever give up. Start small and let the business grow itself. Just focus on perfecting your skills and becoming really, really, really good at what you do and the work will find you. Just give it time and do your best every single day. I too did not have a clue about staff and I ended up getting so busy I needed the help and I started hiring and learned along the way. What ever I needed help learning I would look up KZbin videos and learn that way. About the website I will definitely say, YES... Build you a website even if it’s not that great it gives people a way to find you. If you can’t build a website then get the google ” My Business “ App ... I’ll make a video on how to use that app to get steady stream of clients. Hope this helps and Much success to you Brotha! Peace out!

Thanks for this video, it was very helpful. Me and my brother are very good at painting and wrapping panels and furniture. So we’ve been thinking to open our own body shop in the UK and make some money off of it. We’re just just going to do panel repair and paint to begin with and then add other stuff like wrapping. Might also flip some cars which need body work (dents, rust etc.). I’m going to be working another job so I can buy proper equipment and afford the workshop rent and insurance until we get enough customers, while my brother runs the business. Do you think that sounds like a decent idea?
@LearnMobilePaintAndBody
@LearnMobilePaintAndBody 2 жыл бұрын
Your very welcome! For sure start whatever you set your heart and mind on because even if you fail you’ll learn from experience and adapt. We all had to start from somewhere and I think you have a great idea with the furniture flipping. Some people are willing to donate old furniture just to get rid of it and make space in their homes but you can refurbish and paint it to make it look more modern then make a healthy profit. You also have a niche business right there and if nobody else is doing it you could corner the market. Flip the furniture and then when your profitable and furniture business sustains itself and you have extra capital then get into flipping cars. In everything you do just do your very best and push yourself to do better and improve and let your work speak for itself. Customers will recognize your talent and the money will always take care of itself. Best wishes and blessings on y’all’s successful journey up ahead!

@@LearnMobilePaintAndBody thank you for the well written out advice. It’s scary starting your first business but I guess the worst that can happen is a bit of money loss from rent and advertising. @LearnMobilePaintAndBody
@LearnMobilePaintAndBody 2 жыл бұрын
@@fonkysahb3352 It can be scary but build your courage up to the point where you push yourself to do things you’ve never done before. Yes there risks and you could lose money but take calculated risks. When I started I built a website and it sat for months. I got no calls, no hits for months but my first lead from the website I built was from a major car auction locally , Adessa and the guy on the other line asked if we were able to do recon for 60 cars in two weeks time. I was working alone, broke, had no paint but I did have all my tools and was confident in my painting skills. I replied Yes Sir, we sure can! I did the demo and got hired on the spot. I worked every day from sun up till sun down for next two weeks and I was able to finish all 60 cars. Don’t let the fear of uncertainty stop you from moving forward. Aim, hope for the best and if you fail learn from it and adjust. With enough trial and error you’ll get to where you want to be and then you’ll set bigger and bolder goals!

My 2008 Jeep commander paint on the roof is completely peeling off. It is not a small vehicle, the roof is high up. I brought it to a collision and body shop and unbelievably they told me "it's rusty we will have to cut off the whole roof and replace it." Bear in mind this is only surface rust. My question is. Do you think a mobile paint person would be able to tackle such a thing. I am sure that the roof does not have to come off. Worse paint job by Jeep I have ever seen. I am in Peoria, Arizona needless to say the temperatures exceed 100 Degrees during the day in the summer. Also complicating the matter is, I am in public housing and they do not allow maintenance of any kind on vehicles. Any suggestions?
@LearnMobilePaintAndBody
@LearnMobilePaintAndBody 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Brotha, I have done that those types of repairs in the past and I will say it can turn out to be a big project that might span into 2 or 3 days to do it right. I would say yes a mobile guy can do it but he/she will need a garage space to work in that is covered and also able to leave the vehicle there overnight to continue working on it the next couple of days. First day you are looking at stripping, sanding, removing rust, and cleaning up edges. After you do all that you on the first day you 2k primer the whole roof and let it dry overnight. On the second day you sand the primer and prep for paint. You will be spraying the base and clear on the second day and let it cure overnight. On the third day you wet sand and buff the roof and it should be like new. Anyone who tells you that it can be done in one day is either rushing or probably not gonna take all the right steps to do a great job. But like they say, you get what you pay for. Another factor is if they use cheap paint products your paint will peel in less than a year. So ask what brand of paint they will use and get a warranty in writing from that established business. It definitely is possible like i said because I have done many roofs before but I always had a warehouse, garage or empty building to do the job over a period of three days. Hope this helps and thanks for your support!

@snoopmalcom If you’re already working Mon - Fri then you can do work for small mom and pop dealerships on the weekends. If you get one account and they might give you 2 -4 cars per weekend. Start on smaller paint repairs such as bumpers, partials, easy scuff and shoot repairs you can finish the jobs same day. Don’t start a car if you can’t finish over the weekend because then they can’t sell it during the week. Once you gain experience working with that dealership it might slow down and tell them to give you a heads up if they get more work. Then move onto getting a second dealership and repeat till you get 4 accounts. Once you have cultivated 2-4 dealerships for weekend only jobs, between all 4 of them they will keep you busy on weekends. At that point you can decide based on your relationship with those dealerships and talk to them of helping you to stay busy and see if they can commit to getting you consistent work so you can switch from your regular job to going solo. If you do good work and you provide fast turn around almost always they will keep your number saved. At this point in time you can either pick up more accounts if it is slow season or economy is slow but it’s very doable. You could even have 8-10 accounts and if each one gave you one or two cars a day you could start there and move up. It’s better to do easy jobs and bill 5 dealerships $225 per job and move around than to try to do one big job and try to bill them $800 for one car. Doing smaller jobs and finishing same day is less chance you’ll run into problems too. Always do your best to excel in your work every single day and the rest will fall into place. Believe in yourself and no matter how stacked the odds are against you just showing up and doing your best every single day is how dreams are achieved! You got this bro!

What's up Brotha! I think you can succeed in either one really. Focus on what your really good at first and let the business grow itself. Once you succeed in all the goals you set for yourself then branch off and add on to your existing business as an extension or supplement of income. There will be ups and downs in any business but if you build different income channels then you will always have money coming in no matter the market. The average millionaire has at least 7 income streams. Don't give up no matter what anyone else says to discourage you and stay motivated! God Bless Brotha!

I believe I was 22 or 23 but going to UTI other a lot of doors. The most valuable thing you can gain while in school apart from knowledge is making new friends. Some of those friends will land decent jobs and others will land dream jobs . If you make friends with those that are going places and that are eager, driven, motivated, focused just stay in touch and encourage one another. One day in the future you will get a call and it will be your Buddy telling you about opportunity and since you already graduated and already have experience at the decent job you are at you’ll be ready for that opportunity. Don’t give up and put in the work and you will get there and if you miss you’ll have friends from your journey to help you get back on track.

Thanks Brotha, Network with as many people as you can. Especially real estate agents if youre in the market to get your own building. There are commercial properties you can buy cheaper if you aquire from property auctions. They are usually held once every month depending on your county. If you know other people willing to invest in your business that are willing to give you some capital in exchange for a percentage of your business for however long that is one way you can go about it. Hope this helps.

11:13 The lesson you should’ve learned was don’t fuck up the calculated slow and controlled work flow of your high uppers at your work place for your own personal gain. all those autobody guys got pissed the fuck off at you because they probably spent years calculating the productivity expectations to impress their bosses without exceeding the work expectations just enough was being accomplished to not have to bust ass every day. When I was 16 me and 3 of my buddies worked at this factory we got trained on the same machine and being so young we wanted to validate ourselves to all of these older gentlemen who have been working there for decades. We never noticed how calculated and meticulous all of the older men worked we thought they were just all old and lazy. But They all were on the same page for years to do just enough production to keep their managers satisfied and not enough production to alert the management that it could be done faster and more productive. Well after a few months me and all my buddies had it down to a science we tripled the production of everyone else’s machines. a meeting was had shortly after with all the machine operators/workers. We were so proud and excited of our production . Just before the meeting all of us machine workers were in the locker room chit chatting what the meeting could be about. Eventually one of the older men who was more of a shy Hispanic man who spoke poor English bursted out and said “it’s because of you little shits! you don’t understand how to pace it.”He explained,” do you want to come into work here for the rest of your life and bust your balls all day everyday in no AC til you’re as old as me?! Meeting the 3x production rate standards forever?!” ”Because that’s what you just did to yourselves and all the rest of us.” Me and my buddies were shocked we were caught completely off guard by the point he had made. He explained “I know how this works because when I was your age and I started here me and all my amigos did the same exact thing to the older generation who had worked there for decades!” And he explained he had the older generation before him explain to him and his amigos why they worked in this slow calculated fashion. The old man said the generation who worked there when he was a young man brought up a point he and I will now never forget.” “one day i woke up and the whole world was in a big god damn hurry” It all made sense now…He explained to me and my buddies how we can resolve the situation the same way he did when he was 16. We destroyed all of our paper work and spreadsheets of our recorded production. When the meeting came around the manager was boasting us and what we had accomplished and shaming the older generations for not keeping up. He reached into the folder to find no paperwork….we lied to him and explained that by not spending so much time doing paperwork is that how we were able to triple our production. He was mind boggled and ended the meeting right there and then. Everything returned back to normal we began working at the older mens pace. A month later they upgraded everything to online and electronic. Production expectations tripled and there was no longer any way to work at the pace the older men set. They tried for a month busting their asses everyday. One day out no where none of them showed up they had all retired….me and my friends tried negotiating pay raises to stay they gave us a dollar raise no pto no bonus…me and my group of friends agreed on quitting on our way out we explained this entire story to the manager who was now old and had worked their very long. He retired shortly after(I think because of us). The factory shut down shortly after due to COVID and having no staff at the time. Hope you enjoyed my story and learned something from it. The end

@@LearnMobilePaintAndBody Thanks Amaya!! Your feedback is much appreciated 🙌🏽 What is your thoughts on Macco? @@crenshawbarbie3071 No Problem, Anytime! About Macco..... They are a nationwide franchise but I wouldn’t take my car to them for a complete paint job. They might offer a cheaper price and you might think you got yourself a deal but remember,” You get what you pay for!” There might be the one in a billion chance that a Macco has a great and talented painter and knows how to lay paint like it’s Shaq’s whip but if they use cheap materials it will all be worthless in less than a year. I always recommend PPG for the paint job your gonna show and tell with pride. This is where asking the shop, “ What paint brand do you use? “ and “ What’s the warranty behind that paint job if it peels or flakes? “ comes in handy. It’s always good to record and get everything in writing should anything go wrong in the future then you have proof of their written warranty and more. Once they know they are dealing with a knowledgeable person they are either gonna want to get rid of you or they will answer with expertise and professionalism.

They have certain regulations on what’s permissible to spray outside. As long as you follow those guidelines and have documented proof of you following them your safe. Also, if you use waterborne paint you can obtain an exemption certificate since your paint system had low VOC’s... Every state is different so check with your own state and federal regulations.
