I ride year round also. Don't do the tech thing, but I have a full suit of Carhartt, insulated gloves, and the hoodie. Add warm socks, and I'm good. Took a ride yesterday, in 31 degrees, for 120 miles. Quite comfortable.

Wow man. You really should try a merino wool base layer, especially darn tough socks. A merino wool buff has SERIOUSLY increased my comfort riding when it's cold out.

I’m a fair weather rider, I admit, but I’ve also never had the warm gear technology or really anything bc I’ve never had a need. This year it’s changing. I’m planning to ride down to Daytona. I don’t want mortgage the house on warm gear (I got the bike for that lol) so I’m going the route you mentioned. I’m thinking compression pants, jeans, maybe even chaps for wind protection and vest and the - 50 degree rated waterproof suit last. Hell, that might even be too much. I think it’s going to work fine. Heated gloves. Wool socks, maybe even the protective layer they sell to go over your socks.

Thumbs up to year round riders, always nice to see I am not alone. Certainly heated gear is one solution, I don’t like tech, it can fail, I like gear that that doesn’t have that potential failure point. Riding in the cold is a combination of gear and mindset. There is a difference between feeling the cool temperatures and it being cold enough to impair movement or cause hyperthermia. Wool socks in a riding boot, wool or PCM (phase change material) layers (I prefer wool) under a wind blocking outer layer, I prefer wax cotton, leather riding thinsulate gloves with a mylar glove liner, wool/poly balaclava or neck gator handles temperatures down into the 20’s F without heated inserts or vests. While I use heated gloves (battery), on my naked bike, no other heated gear is necessary. While my touring bike has heated grips and seat, I rarely use the grips and have never needed the heated seat. A Pinlock visor insert has solved the foggy issue, even when it is drizzly or humid in the mid 30’s. Thanks for the video. Keep the shinny side up!

I suffered from hypothermia before because of crappy gear choices, but I just got back from a 3-day trip around western Colorado and Utah and I was prepared. I only had heated gear in my upper half- LD Comfort base layer, Hotwired liner and gloves and down hoodie under a Joe Rocket textile jacket. Legs had freeze-out long johns under DYNS Kevlar riding jeans and tourmaster boots. Combined with the heated grips and seat on my Gold Wing Tour DCT, I was toasty and comfortable the whole time. Great riding, and I pretty much had the Million Dollar Highway to myself, which tends to happen when it’s 28 outside. Great video! Just subscribed.

Thank you for such a phenomenal video! I'm a Georgia boy who moved to Colorado a few years ago, and while I was able to ride summer through winter in the South, riding in winter here is nearly impossible without heated gear. One thing I've found that nearly eliminates the fogging problem with my visor is a pinlock visor setup. Not an expensive bit of kit, and worth every penny!

I Ride almost all year around here on the coast of Virginia and all that you have to do is Dress for the occasion ie winter - long John's and leathers good boots and socks and, and good insulated gloves and maybe a face mask depending on your helmet

As an avid Canadian winter rider, i can totally relate to this very informative video. I opted fot a weightless battery powered vest and battery gloves. Thats it! I dont get cold feat or cold legs. I also dont ride in temps below -5C. It takes me a few minutes more to get ready, but not an ordeal. Also my riding season is between march and december in southern Ontario, and typical winter thaw days.Great video, i can tell you are enthusiastic about biking.

My base layer is 250g Merino Wool thermals top and bottom from Smart Wool. Then I have my riding pants that are thick with Kevlar. My outer layer are some snowboarding pants I've had on the mountains in 3ft of snow in 10deg. My lower half is quite warm actually. My upper half same thing with the 250g Merino Wool thermals then I have a compression/nylon top over my wool. Then I use a REAX rain liner jacket (paper thin but acts as a heat retainer like you see athletes trying to burn weight) over my thermals and nylon/compression top. Next I have the Merlin Gable leather jacket with a nice thermal liner. My head is the exact same AXIAL balaclava you have! It's great and only $10 most times. My gloves are Lee Parks Design deer gloves that I put liners in and they aren't the best but allow me to still go ride. This allows me to ride in anything I've seen so far, down to 30deg, and remain fairly warm. My gloves are the weak spot that I might To be honest, I'm not a big fan of all the wires but at the same time if you're nice and toasty warm in 0-15deg weather then I might need to 'get over it' lololol. You’re well layered. I have everything in this video except the heated pants. But I have a 1 piece suit that does not allow any cold wind coming into my body. I recommend a slightly tinted visor with a pin lock to prevent fogging. Great video brother, God bless you and your family, viewers etc.

First time seeing your channel, I love your positivity and sincerity. Your house is beautiful. Like others have commented, I also don’t have long commutes so a laborious effort to hook everything up is a deterrent for me. Cost of the heated gear is another. For me, I can survive normal commutes with a long sleeve shirt, hoodie, and insulated liner in my textile winter motorcycle jacket. I also use the Axial “Block” balaclava, it’s awesome. Legs: wool socks, jeans, HWK padded and wind proof lined overpants is usually enough, but compression pants if it gets real cold. I’ve ridden in sub-0 temps and the only serious concern is my hands. I considered HotWired gloves, but I guess I’ve let a few bad reviews convince me it’s not worth the expense. Got a nice pair of NORU gloves, they work pretty good for 30-60 minute intervals.

Great info for anyone wanting to stay on two wheels on cold days. "Getting ready for war" I say the same thing when my wife looks at me on cold days when I'm prepping for a ride. Too many riders surrender to old man winter but to me that's too many days to not be in the saddle. I roll with all the Hotwired gear and for the outer layer I use a Joe Rocket Survivor suit because it's an easy one piece with CE armor that allows for flexibility for the cruiser or the sport bike. Thanks for the suggestions; I had not known that there was such a thing as heated sole inserts! Riders can wear just layers of good clothes and stay warm mostly, but the heated gear is what actually puts heat BACK into you. Only trouble is that once I get all geared up then I find it's time to use the bathroom.

I drive all year through except December, January and usually the first half of February ( Austria; it can get -10°C where I live and it usually snows a lot around that time ). But I usually don't 'winterize'/put my bike to sleep, becuase even int hose months, there are often warm days, where it's more than 5°C. But since I don't have any heatgear ( yet ), I usually don't ride long distances ^^

I put dirtbike hand guards that help keep wind from going up the sleeves. I've also used snowmobile hand covers which keep me completely warm except the chest and neck which a tall windshield is what helps that part of the body. This year I will try canvas leg wind deflector attached made from a simple rebar frame I will have welded that I can cover during cold or wet weather and remove during warm weather

Every bike don't have that setup so you just gotta put on what you like and what you think is cozy and protective. I used to do landscaping and me and my buddy use to put on them pants thermals as well as the long sleeve ones when it was absolutely freezing and I'll tell anyone now, they're absolutely worth it and they'll keep you warm guaranteed.

One thing you did not mention is the fact that a person needs a summer leather and winter leather. The winter leather needs to be larger to take on the under layers and the summer leather needs to be snug with a T-shirt. One thing you’ll find out fairly quickly is when you start buying all this stuff, it gets very expensive.

This is my 5 year plan, being able to maybe get rid of my car altogether and just ride through winter :) this first year riding has been the best thing for my mental health, and I have been devastated at not being able to ride. It's around 10 degrees f when I go to work in the morning, but in the back of my head, I know snowmobiling is a thing. Cold riding, here we go! I've been riding for a couple years now up 30 minutes north of Seattle, rain or shine, winter and summer. My gear isn't as expensive, or as tech heavy, because my current ride for the last two years has been on a motorscooter with low wattage. But you know what? You have it right, man. Layers, layers and even more layers. Gear that can keep you warm if your bike can handle it. Not letting any skin touch the air! I've got a new bike coming, and with the crazy cold fog this last couple of weeks, I've been legitimately looking at heated gear. Up until now, I've been happy with a leather jacket, thick sweaters or hoodies, and baggy rain pants over jeans. My new ride's going to require more for winters like this or worse.

For me in the cold I go with long wool socks, leather boots, compression pants, compression long sleeve top, long sleeve t shirt, jeans, battery heated vest, thick leather jacket, a neck gaitor and battery heated gloves and heated grips. Nothing powered to the bike battery. I ride in temps down to 20° F (-6.66° C) and all good! Nice video.

Great video. A few tips. Wool long underwear is best. You can make your own heated jacket and pant liners using cheap pads sewn onto sweats. Putting hot ones into gloves and boots works too

I have a full Gerbing set of heated gear. Any time I've ridden with it, no matter how cold, I end up having to either turn it off or run it at lowest heat settings, it will get you hotter than riding in August in Miami! As long as there is no ice or snow, you can literally ride in any temps with heated gear.

Thank You Sir, If it's 40 degrees and dry I'm riding. Now I've returned home well after dark and at a much colder temp but I stay warm with layers of wool and "Hot Hands" I ride older bikes so I do not tax my electrical system with additions like heated gear. I wear insulated boots, polypro long underwear or my wool union suit. Over that base I wear wool pants and a wool flannel shirt then my leathers. My winter riding jacket is an extra large so I am comfortable with the layers loose fitting. Two years ago I finally bought a modular helmet and kicked myself for being so stupid under a half dome for years. For my hands I have sewn a pocket to the top of a thin pair of wool gloves to slip "hot hands" packets into under my leather gloves. I do not rely on "heated" gear because they burn out, my electrical system may burn out or I may have an accident and then I'm screwed with no real insulation for my core. Prayers for those who do spend the money, I just beg of you to carry extra layers for emergencies. I'm no fan of heated grips because your blood flows through the tops of your hands and grips I've seen don't get hot enough to circulate heat around your whole hand. I've no feeling in my right hand so I am extra protective of it. When it has come down to riding in snow I do slow down but I do not stop unless the ice is bad. I pay for a whole year of insurance why not use it! I don't call out those that do not ride in winter, that's their choice. Maybe they put down more miles while I am working in the summer??? Having retired, most of my heated gear is collecting dust living in Northern Alabama. I have been riding in cold weather climates since 1972 in Minnesota, so I have gone through the entire array of products and riding conditions. Do watch out for black ice, as it can be a bad experience. I also found myself riding I-40 Barstow to Albuquerque in 25 degree temperatures and 4” of snow when my Widder vest and gloves stopped working. Ahh, but I digress. For my past 34 mile daily round trip to work, I wore Gerber’s heavy duty riding pants with insulated liner, gloves and jacket liner underneath a riding jacket. I have heated socks, but found them a pain to put on, plus didn’t need them for only 17 miles. A balaclava is a must have! I was comfortable down to 19 degrees. I have since bought the light weight pants liner which I wear underneath my Klim riding pants. I will probably buy the lightweight jacket liner as well. I noticed that the lightweight non-insulated liner is not as effective and requires more power to stay warm (more strain on your alternator). However, the lightweight liner is easily packed requiring less space for trips. I wear LDComfort undergarments-both cold weather and hot weather. Some people at work thought I was crazy riding to work in freezing temperatures, but I was actually warmer than they were as I was wearing my gear as soon as I would step outside. As far as getting dressed, once I had the process down, I could be ready in five minutes. Maybe my Army training helped.

The drawbacks I see are the fact that I would need to allow 20 minutes extra to get ready to ride and also that I would also need to allot that same amount of time to change clothes when I arrived at my destination to begin work or whatever activities I was traveling to.

Great info! I'm a new rider and I live in Vermont. Been riding since June, pretty much all the time in rain or sunshine. Well today I rode for my second time in the snow and it was terrible, fog wise. I couldn't see anything out my visor that is supposed to be fog resistant, and I had a bunch of collected snow/ice on my visor that I was forced to ride with up. My face stung so badly from the sleet and I could barely breathe with the wind. My motorcycle is a dual sport and is my main form of transportation aside from my ebike, walking, and Ubers. My boss suggested a heated visor which I had never heard of before today. I also have a balaclava I ordered that should be here Thursday and I'm also researching studded tires. Any tips? Thanks!

I’m 74, and can’t work out as much as I used to. That left a big hole in my day, so I bought a 2000 Honda Shadow Sabre 1100cc that weighs almost 600lbs (I weigh less than 115lbs). I don’t have enough money to go “High Tech”, but I understand about windbreakers and parka liners. I do have cheap Chinese heated gloves from Amazon though. Living in South Carolina where the winters are relatively moderate, means even though I only go out when it’s 40 (give or take) or above, that’s almost every day. When it’s near 40, I wear a facemask and rainsuit to completely block the wind. My bike only cost $1,700; after changing all the fluids, regreasing everything, and replacing the rear tire, closer to $2,000. It only had 28,500mi on it and runs like new. I wear full-body armor year-round. I’ve dropped my bike 10 times; the first 5 times I received injuries (no armor or crash bars), the last 5, with protective gear, no injuries! I haven’t dropped it for 3 months now.

gerbing manufacturing is like 3 miles from my house. you can go there weekdays and purchase seconds off their rack cheap. the mask cover is a must, especially a wind proof one.

it's good to check your bike's electrical output in amps. check on what the bike needs, then add up all of the amps drawn from your heated gear. if your gear draws too much power, you will slowly drain the battery down. I personally like "Warm n Safe" heated gear, out of a Portland, Oregon company. the owners ride bikes, "gear for bikers by bikers". stay warm n stay safe. your handlebars don't look like they would support them, but handlebar Muffs are a god send.

What do you think? I'm comfy with 33 degrees. I have standard gear, a fairing which knocks off the wind from my legs, body and hands, heated grips and seat. Temps of 32 and below I will avoid, if possible, because in my area we have freezing fog. On top of that I consider myself a conservative rider of average skill.

Thanks for showing what's available, for winter riding. All Bikes run so much better in the colder air and you're safer with the more cloths you have on if you go down. See so many riding naked in the summer. I so much envied your ride as I didn't see a single Cage on the nice Farm roads. I have to ride miles in Car Parades to find some Country here in Atlanta Ga. The Cage drivers have no respect for each other, let alone Bikers.....

I bought the HD FXRG jackets, helmet and pants and gloves. Better for me than the wires and gadgets. I do think about all this stuff you are using here but to do this before work and after work is what would be a time warp for me. I also don’t care for the Michigan below 32 slide ride ether… …don’t like riding horizontal where the damm ice has taken me a few times in the past. I do get it though, there is something glorious about a cold weather ride when the sky is all clear and other factors like absence of ice are in place. There’s really nothing else like that. So thankful the coldest it gets out here is 30-32 degrees, compression clothes, heated gloves, and a thick winter riding jacket and im comfortable, my lower face is becoming an issue tho so i might need to get a face mask like that

I'd love to ride in winter. I have all the gear, but the rides where I'm at are all snow covered roads interrupted by sections with ice. It doesn't get less slippery with warm gear on. Consider yourself very fortunate.

Love your video! I got a gerbing jacket in 89 when it was my primary mode of travel (rode 80 miles each way daily across southern PA, rt 30). That jacket made 22 degree days possible! Life got in the way but I’m back now and YOU are definitely a great help for my second greatest pleasure!

I went out last year when the temp was around zero degrees. I had on only one heated item, my Gerbing jacket. I put a muffler around my neck, insulated gloves (unheated) and GI combat boots. I went around 70 miles at hiway speeds (60mph). I could have gone for hours--I had some chilled areas but when your core is warm you will be okay for hours (bike was a V-strom)

as long as there isn't any snow on the ground I'm riding. I've ridden in windchills in the teens. if I can make a suggestion, get a snowmobile helmet. they're DOT rated, have extra padding, a chinskirt, and a double visor to prevent fogging.

The pin lock works great. I just don’t have one on this helmet. Great suggestions on that type of helmet though.💪🏾💯

Man, I co-sign everything you said! My MC rides all year long (O-SIX RYDERZ MC, Herndon, VA). I have a years long streak of riding at least once in every month. Here in Virginia, it’s ICE COLD Brick City! Especially in Virginia. Ride your $h!t in whatever wired heated gear you like… just make sure all the pieces are compatible!
