Don’t forget you are the heat source, you warm the bag, the bag has no warmth itself. So a few star jumps or something to get your body heat up before you get in a bag will make a massive difference. Get in warm 👍👍

I personally don't drink alcohol, great tip not to drink too much! I remember two military officers (many many years ago) on Mount Ararat in summer shared a full bottle of whiskey and went to sleep. They were found dead next day, died of exposure due to the alcohol they had consumed. Now I know that is an extreme example, but it goes to show the dangers of what Alcohol when taken to extremes can do to your body!

In very cold climates such as Canada 🇨🇦, we use synthetic outer bags to allow moisture from the inner down bag to escape and freeze on the synthetic outer layer surface. Works really well 👍 I also highly recommend mittens with liners or thin gloves vs insulated gloves for warmth. Keeping your fingers together generates more heat and promotes better circulation. My little cold weather luxury is to make a brew last thing at night and put it into a steel flask. Then I can have a warm drink when I wake up whilst still in my maggot :) I boost the insulation round the flask with two Aussie ‘stubby coolers’, Just recently my niece bought me a Sigg Hot and Cold bottle and it’s the dog’s danglies :)

Nalgene bottle makes a great hot water bottle. Put in socks to stop burn. In the morning, water (not frozen) for coffee👍.loving that headtorch.

Another fan of a Nalgene bottle with hot water covered with a sock, heat holders pads around the wrists and other areas 👍. Also suggest silicone boot covers to slip over you socks for toilet visits. Don't try and go to sleep with lots of layers. Apply layers when needed. Ill often use a fleece or down jacket in the bag if I've a "cold area".

Never underestimate a good quality cold weather sleeping bag. I trekked the Inca trail in 2019, one night we camped at 4500 metres, it was so cold the tents were frozen the following morning. At breakfast everyone was talking about how many layers of clothes they had to wear to stay warm, I was apparently the only one with a good sleeping bag as I slept in just my underwear and too be honest I was a bit too warm.

My favourite is the hot water bottle, I take mine no matter the season as it's the best way to get warm faster even on a cool summer night. On a winter night it's a game changer.

I have had tramp foot so many times because I'm a walker and the times I have put my foot on a spongy bit of ground and beneath it about 6" of water. So I need to take my socks off when I get in my sleeping bag. It's the best way to cure it. I love videos like this because it's a life saver. 🤠👍❤🙏

I second the small hot water bottle tip, a boil some extra water for it with my last cup of tea for the night, place the bottle in the sleeping bag, makes a huge difference before I jump in it.

I use a platypus water bladder as a hot water bottle. Useful to have a small funnel to prevent your fingers getting burned when you fill it. Can wrap it in bubble wrap and stuff it in a stuff sack for a UL hot water bottle. Plus the water inside is still drinkable once it has cooled down.

58 pattern sleeping bag is probably the best ever to keep you warm. I used one for years during my time in the army and you can’t get better.

Ah yes Sprinkling Tarn, that was the first place I camped in the lake district back in 2010. I put my back out passing the tarn on the way to Scafell pike, I managed to get up the pike and back down to the tarn and enjoyed a good night sleep with the dog at Sprinkling Tarn. I should go back some day.

I have the same tent, the oex phoxx II v2 and its amazingly versatile. A kind fella in go outdoors recommended it to me. I used it camping in the lakes in the snow early December and it provided great shelter. so if anybody is thinking of getting one, do so. Great video as always!

Best tip for staying warm is to go to the loo as soon as you feel the need, dont hold it in. Your body uses a huge amount of energy to keep your bladder warm.

Try the closed cell pad on top. It's more effective than underneath. Air convection occurs in an air pad, even with a fiber insulation. The foam pad, used underneath, is likely to be much closer to the ground temperature, since it is only separated from the ground by the fabric floor, than the temperature of your body, which is separated from the closed cell foam pad by the circulating air within the air mattress. Physics is mostly a science based on common sense and experimenting with variables.

Thanks for all your great advice this year, Paul. As you said, good hot food with enough calories is vitally important. I do worry that some of these meal packs do not have enough cals for the extra work done during hiking and cals to keep warm. After all, the sleeping bag only works because of heat produced from the warm body (obviously!). And hot drinks for morale and hydration. Have a good year in 2021, Paul.

Yes. They claim to be a meal but only contain 500-750 calories. I augment mine with noodles which adds a lot of carbs. They cook while the bagged meal is hydrating for nine minutes. I sometimes drink the noodled water if I’m short of water!

I have one of these, it's a very good tent for the money. It's pretty roomy for me and a German Shepherd. I have a Gortex bivvy bag over my sleeping bag if we have been in the rain.

Another great vid. Don't just look at it from the point of winter etc camping but good solid healthy tips to ALL year round camping AND your spring, summer, autumn (a good percentage of us re this 👀😊) Sleeping bags can be a real issue for WARMTH !! Lightweight ones can be next to useless. I got caught out on one occasion when the outside temp dropped rapidly overnight, a lesson well learned! The tog rating just like your winter or summer quilt can be VERY relevant! 👀😊 Layers of clothing - several light weight layers PLUS a few extra heavier ones are always good. Wool as you say is great for extra warmth etc, we're not fans of puffa jackets etc cept maybe summer etc A more durable padded jacket paying a little more is always worth the money if you are camping on a regular basis?! Leather is a pain in the ! when it's pouring with rain etc as leather can soak up the water!! FACT! Don't think using ie dubbing is going to resolve the issues either.. synthetic water proofed hiking boots or shoes are much better, Good to note you mention thermal SOCKS though again be careful here as some cheap nasty ones are NO real benefit ! Those woollen bobble hats my gran used to knit? Believe me at night when the temp drops and pop one of them on your head (your head can lose up to 60% of your body's heat!!) in the tent or out and about !!👀😊Lightweight waterproof single layer roll up and tuck away jackets are brilliant for that sudden downpour. The hoodie can be a real gem for keeping your wool hat in place 👀😊 Have a reasonable meal about 2 hours before you settle down for the night - not always good to have a meal immediately before you sleep AND watch what you eat as some foods will keep you awake!! 👀 Dry pack foods are brilliant and nutrition friendly. Being able to boil water for a cuppa is ALWAYS a real treat BUT naked flame inside a tent? Seldom a good idea! picking somewhere where you can use the burner et to brew up - cheers! Oh and we take tea bags that are different from our normal cuppa with milk such as ie lemon tea etc though of course you can take dried milk etc OR better still the three in one milk, sugar COFFEE sachets. DO REMEMBER however NOT TO LITTER!! As said great vid and seasons greeting friend ! 👍👀

Love winter camping. Biggest issue is deciding where to go. Each location has its own charm. Of late my favorite is the Florida Gulf Coast where a good bases layer of sun block is essential. However in the deep short days of January the Florida Keys offer just enough challenge. Cheers and good health from the winter camper.
