How I Store My Costumes -- Closet Tour!

I have 400 + tiaras. Dust eats them. I bought China cabinets cheap at thrift stores, put bright paint on the ugly Seventies ones, they’re giant jewelry boxes. You only need one, and some busts for necklaces. I use skulls from Halloween, painted black or white for tiaras. It looks very Suzanne Sugarbaker.

I love it when we are given a peak into someone's historical costume wardrobe. Costumes have a habit of taking over. We've lost our front room to our costume collection, as well as our guest bedroom which is now our sewing room. A small price to pay 😊

For gowns with trains, I use a second hanger (skirt type hanger) so that they don't hit the ground. Sometimes I use a long ribbon stitched inside the gown to loop up over the main hanger.

Great video. Just wanted to share advice from my grandmother. Never store furs in or touching plastic of ant kind. Because fur will sweat and the rot when it dries. She taught me that they used old cotton pillow cases for small stolls or pieces they couldn't hang. For fur coats I hang them and use the biggest/widest cotton pillow cases I have. I open the seam at the end just an inch and put the hanger through it just like a garment bag. Works great for all but the very long coats. I pan to just sew a long case with some scrap cotton. 🥼 happy sewing 🙂

When I have a studio space, Im gonna possibly have a couple of floors above the garage built for my sewing studio and possibly a massive closet for all my big and heavy gowns especially the ones with long trains

Hi Rebecca, thanks for the video. A question about how do you protect your wool and silk garments from moth damage? Moth balls are so stinky. Would you have used cedar chips or herbal sachets(or pomanders) in the closets other than clothing bags?

I have used cedar balls before. I probably should replace them at this point, but I bought a big pack of them on Amazon a couple years ago. I mostly just put them on the shelf or the floor.

If your cedar balls or planks are no longer . . . Smelly take some sandpaper and sand down to a fresh layer of cedar and you can extend their life use. I buy mine at thrift stores and do this. Works great.

How do you store farthingales/full hoops without distorting them? I have multiple sizes for 16th century gowns and can’t find a good way to store them

My elliptical cage crinoline hangs on a hanger, but for my other two smaller hoopskirts, I take the hoop steel out of the channels, coil each one up, and put them in a round canvas drawstring bag, which keeps them all in a nice coil.

Do you have a recommendation on where to get hat boxes? Also, I found it funny how you kept calling your house small- to me it is huge! I live in a 288 sqft house but am moving into one that is 840, I'm so excited for all the space!

Ooh, all your new space is going to be super exciting! I can't imagine having only 288 sq ft. As far as hat boxes go, a lot of mine are vintage from estate sales or thrift stores (the majority from thrift stores) but you can also find decently sized/priced ones at Ross, or probably other home type discount stores.

I have no doubt you could not fashion some custom sized hat boxes from poster board. It's just circles with dog ears the way I've done boxes. Lots of hot glue. lol
