English teacher here: you were talking about plot structure. Most modern literature follows a basic 3 part plot structure--beginning, middle, and end. LIke "once upon a time..." "then one day..." "happily ever after." A character solves a problem, overcomes an obstacle, learns about themselves, etc. Think Star Wars. Sounds like what you were saying about ancient literature is that conflict isn't central to the story like modern stories. Stories and events are presented and repeated to show their importance instead of showing the importance of details through conflict.

This was SOOO helpful! I use commentaries but I usually read the WHOLE commentary and take notes on EVERYTHING I find interesting. But I don't always have the time to do that so I like the idea of using the commentaries only when I have a question or need more context 😊😊

In my study Bible, regarding mighty man in reference to Nimrod, they have it translated as "mighty hunter" in the KJV and it says this is hunter in regards to hunting men and not animals and that 'his exploits are of a moral and spiritual nature. "Mighty hunter" is from Gen 6:4 and his name relates to the word 'marad' meaning rebel. Thus Nimrod established a thoroughly autocratic, imperialistic, despotic system of government, back of which stands Satan in all his rage against God.' That's almost word for word out of my study Bible. Pretty interesting stuff when you pair it with the things you talked about! It goes on to explain that Nimrod committed his acts before the Lord, and what he did was significant and a matter of concern to God Himself. Great stuff! Thanks for doing this for us Faith!!

Hey, Faith! I recently got back into the word and studying it in depth. The Lord has so blessed me already, though it’s only been a week. I’m so grateful for your ministry and how much you make it evident that the WHOLE BIBLE can be, and is intended to be delighted in today. Have you ever considered just reading through the Bible, and taking however long it takes to read it? So rather than trying to read as much as you can to finish the reading plan, you would read however much you can until you have to move on for times sake. It’s what I’m doing right now and I love being able to dwell on certain verses that the Lord is revealing some deep truth through.

Your channel was suggested for me today on KZbin. I liked your search to see if Nimrod's description related to David's mighty men but then decided it was just a description of "soldier" or something similar. My NLT agreed, saying "first heroic warrior." What has made me subscribe, though, is your reaction when you thought that God wasn't acting in character at Babel. Your instinctive response was "what am I missing?" instead of "God's not being fair!" Then you found a literary reason for the passage and a commentary that highlighted human disobedience that God needed to address. I really appreciated your honesty and your determination to understand.

The BEMA podcast, Session 1, covers the Torah. Along the way, they beautifully explain chiasm (prolly spelling that wrong) and once you know, you know. And see them everywhere! The Torah is filled with them. Learning the OT from a rabbi and Jewish follower of Jesus has totally flipped my understanding of the OT! It’s a completely different book than what I was taught growing up Episcopalian. Not sure how I found your KZbin channel this weekend, but glad to be here. Thank you!

I didn’t think incest was outlawed until Leviticus. There would not have been a genetic overload at this point so it wouldn’t have been unsafe, so I’m not sure that’s what the issue is with Ham seeing his dad

I had the same thought, but am thinking it had more to do with the fact that Noah was the head of the family. Laughing at him in his vulnerable position shows a lack of respect, which could have destroyed a family by destroying their respect for their leader.

I like how you said “that little treasure hunt.” That’s what I feel like I’m doing when I’m studying, particularly when I’m try to answer a question or clarify something. I believe it was a Bible project podcast I listened to not long ago, they briefly discussed Nimrod and how he was a hunter, and his name kind of became synonymous with the word. And because of the looney toons cartoon, the name in modern culture has sort of changed to an insult. Interesting how words change over time.

Something else I have found incredibly helpful in studying these odd sections in the Old Trestament is remembering a lot is historically based. Nimrod, more than likely Enmerkar in Mesopotamiun history, wrote on clay tablets about what these passages in Genesis are passibly referring to. Of course, we know religiously which side we are on, but it really brings quite a bit to the table.

This was beautiful! Watching you struggle through a passage, searching hungrily for an answer that would give you understanding... that's what it's all about. My color scheme: RED - GOD, CHRIST, HOLY SPIRIT, Love (GOD is love), Fire - underline in orange and circled in red (GOD is a consuming fire) PINK - (we want to be like Christ/pink wants to be like red) so anything about life of believer PURPLE - CHRIST'S righteousness, salvation ORANGE - satan, antichrist, sin, consequences BLUE - Commandments of GOD; Prophecies GREEN - clarification, doctrine issues, strong concordance, definitions BROWN - sanctuary information, historical information, heaven, angels YELLOW - Prophecies of Christ fulfilled in NT (or to be fulfilled) BLACK - notes connected to yellow and chain links through Bible... I mark next to scripture where to take someone next if I'm showing someone a theme in the Bible

Faith, my Bible translation has the words "might hunter" to describe Nimrod. I think sometimes just looking at different translations of the same verses help me better understand the verse I am focusing on. As far as my daily time, I have been reading and just jotting notes on sticky notes and only writing in the Bible or underlining when I KNOW I want to remember for another time. I write my questions, comments, etc on the stickies and then when I have time to sit and study, I will focus on those stickies. Make sense?

The part where you said it sounded as if he was threatened by man, the other part in my opinion is that God was saving man from himself. Think about it, the higher they got the thinner the air and well oxygen is less people would die. 🤔 Just because we CAN do something doesn't necessarily mean we should. Just my two cents on the subject. God bless.
