I used to take notes and LOVED taking down notes, but when I was introduced to Anki on my third year med school, I noticed that I took down notes less...until such a time that I DO NOT take notes at all, even today that I'm preparing for my licensure exam. What's also good is that since I used spaced-rep for studying, my grades went up, and retention was better too. :) how I wish I knew about this study technique before! Anyway, thanks for the informative video! Happy studying :)

I've always been on the note taker train and as soon as July comes around, I am thinking about hopping off. I know my time management could use some polishing and note taking is such a time-sink, especially when the benefits of Anki is multifold and staring you in the face. On the other hand, tricks being used and not revealing helpful information in solving problems and what is being faced. I actually found TA’s helpful more than professor, they just give it to you and it all then makes sense.

I’m a first year medical student in Sweden. I have to do my own questions for Anki. I do questions based on the syllabus/curriculum/goal description for the course (don’t know how to describe it 😅, we get it from the teacher, it contains the things we need to know for the exam). If you didn’t have access to premade Anki decks, how do you think your study work flow would look like then? ☺️
@EvolvingMedic
@EvolvingMedic 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question Amanda! I would probably do something similar where I would make cards based on the high yield topics in my lectures and what my professors say will be on the exam. Making your own cards can be nice because you’re getting an additional rep off studying just by making them!

That said, I never used AnKing (only zanki pharm) as I was scared that there may not be too much overlap with class. I'm thinking about looking into it this summer but we'll see. It's definitely interesting thinking about how to approach Step 1 as it will most likely be pass fail next year.

Nice Worflow! Quick question, I understand reviewing the material everyday is helpful however how specifically do you prepare for an exam in a specific class using this method? Do you perform extra passes of the material on anki from a specific class a week before an exam for example?
@EvolvingMedic
@EvolvingMedic 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a really good question Lucas! I actually don’t do much extra and I think that’s where there’s so much benefit to doing Anki consistently. The day before finals doesn’t really look much different than any other day. We usually have review sessions the day before, so the only added thing I will do is review some of the slides on topics I wasn’t great on during the review session.

The textbooks they provide for us contain a bunch of material i feel as though I’m not learning when I’m just taking notes From there
@EvolvingMedic
@EvolvingMedic 3 жыл бұрын
What’s up Kc! That’s a great question and really depends on your studying preferences. If you find that you never review the notes you take (which was me), I’d recommend scrapping note taking lol. You could instead use spaced repetition tools like Anki or Quizlet. If you do review the notes you take, but find it hard to learn from the textbook, you can try taking notes from your professor’s PowerPoint slides/lectures. I found that textbooks and note taking didn’t work for me so I tried learning through things like Anki and it worked a lot better for me. Now is the time for you to experiment with how you learn so you may want to give other techniques a try. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Alright I get the no-note thing. Solid. But what about incorrects on your practice Qs? How would you manage to document those so that you can review them? I've come up with, an excel sheet, 1-liner of the topic and explanation, OR make an Anki card and put the topic and explanation there. Thoughts?
@EvolvingMedic
@EvolvingMedic 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! Your excel sheet idea sounds like a good one! I would probably just review the topic (watch a video on it, review slides on it, etc.). If the topic included things I needed to remember more so than concepts to understand, I would probably make an Anki card on it.

sorry if this is too specific of a question, but I am debating a do school that allows students to pick what chapters of books will be tested. I am assuming as long as anki and skethcy have the subject/book, you would be able to build a plan for this as well? I know do and md do have some differences, but in general, they're all learning the broad strokes the same nuts and bolts?

I did something similar!! Just I didn't get into Anki soon enough, so I just stuck with pre-reading lectures and videos and questions. I do have to admit that I kinda gave that up when I started second year, in that I was obsessed with annotating Boards & Beyond into my FA, so my FA is swollen 😆 But if I have to do it over, I probably also would have incorporated AnKing. You can use quizlet if you are more comfortable with that platform. It’s something you could do if you really wanted a bit of a head start on things, but you definitely don’t have to. I would gauge how you are feeling with the material (based on class exams, etc.) and if what you’re doing is working, I’d keep on doing it. If you need a little something more, I would definitely recommend lecturio.
