In this video I go over warm and cool colors. What are they? How do you use them? How do you mix them? All these questions are answered in this video. Enjoy!

Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

Enlightened once again with that golden tidbit about yellow, then red dropping away in the distance. Colour choices for landscapes will be a lot easier with that in mind. Thanks heaps 🙌

Agreed, your videos are certainly incredibly helpful. I've previously painted in CMYK acrylics and since watching yours and a few others I've taken the steps to try oils and also to paint much more loser and freely with oils. Thank you.

Excellent tip with keeping a separate brush just for the sky. I'm going to use that one. Warmer colors dropping out earlier further back you go... another good one.

I think I'm becoming addicted to your videos :D Ty for another one! Bro, I want to tell you another one cool thing about small picture sizes(yeah, again). When I was painting on large formats, my productivity wasn't very high. I was looking at this big picture, like "meh, I'm painting this picture for week, I don't want to do this anymore :(" and poof, some kind of artblock! But now I paint new pictures (around 12x12 inches(or 30x30 cm) EVERY 1-2 DAYS! (And their quality makes me very happy too). It's just fantastic! 😨

Well, Chris, YOU are my special Thanksgiving present of 2020 ... and I wanted something really special today. "You" were "offered" to me by KZbin; I had never seen you before, I had sort of narrowed down to my favorite art teacher, Diane Mize, but you have brought a fresh perspective to my learning. The first one I watched tonight was about "Painting Small" - that was JUST what I needed... I have been so uninspired. I did a 36" x 45" for my sister and was glad to send it to her...I really struggled to fill up that space and still to keep it relative. Painting small is the perfect antidote for me! I thank you. It was so good for me, I have gone on and now this is the 3rd lesson I've gotten into tonight and I do feel ready to begin to paint tomorrow. One more time, I thank you. The color mixing one is just wonderful watching you do it, to match it... great...and now you have given me an insightful lesson on the realities about "warm" and "cool" colors. One last time tonight, I thank you!

@@paintcoach Now I'm over there watching the one about the Gamsol and the medium. It brought me to MY question: Have you done, or will you do, a video on Liquin. Once I found it, I can hardly go without but that was what was happening on my BIG picture, it was all getting too thin. So far in the 4 videos, I have not heard a word about Liquin and wonder if you have a simpler solution...the way your basic palate with the 3 primaries and the white was such a simple and fresh approach...it freed me.

Hi Chris! So you have a photo reference. How do we "study" a photo! What you start painting first? Layer 1..back round ...Layer 2 . ???? . Could you do a vid about that??? If you do 2 samples .... 1 portrait and 1 landscape ! Sometimes i find myself starting at the photo thinking ..."hmm where do i start from " . Thank you in advance! Your vids are very helpful! No many art youtube accounts get it right . You sir are spot on it terms of sharing useful information !!! Thanks! 🙋‍♀️🌺

Hi Chris. Thanks for the video, very interesting. Perhaps you can help me understand how to de-saturate a blue/green sea closest to the horizon? The compliment is red/orange which are warm colors. Doesn't make sense, if these are the colors that drop out with distance.

You will not belive... I know a cold yellow and a warm blue ( cadmium lemon and ultramarine blue). It is relative of course. I advice to have both cold and warm hues of each color on your palette to make volume.

I have seen in some videos that they mention what the warm and cool colors are for each basic color. For example, for blue, they say that ultramarine is the warm blue, while cerulean blue or phthalo blue are the cold blues. Cadmium yellow is the warm yellow, while lemon yellow is the cool yellow. Cadmium red is the warm red, alizarin crimson the cool red. Are all of these valid? What is your opinion;

Quick question, ive just started to buy black paint, in the past i would simply make it with Prussian blue and burnt umber, but now im playing with blacks and finding some real variations in their warmth, my question, Is Mars black a warm black?
