One of the best marathon preparation videos I’ve seen on the net, I had a very similar experience with my marathon a few weeks back, that’s one thing that helped me was take a jel. Regularly I took one every half hour instead of when I felt like it, makes a big difference, I used the pacers but as a guide only, if I felt I needed to drop back I’d drop back & then catch up again to the group on the down hills, I think if you can learn to do just the right amount on the taper weeks, my taper routine I do a few 10k easy pace runs, with 5 x 30sec hill sprints, few swims a week & a few easy pace bike rides, just enough to keep the legs awake & fresh for race day, excellent video keep up the good work👍🏼🌿👣✅🥳

It’s important to take gels after running some MP segments of the long run - how your GI responds to gel is contingent on paces you’re running so make sure that body gets used to taking gel while running a race pace!👍

I was able to improve in almost 20min my second marathon but still I was a bit disappointed as I wanted to make sub 3h30, but it was within my goals so finishing with a new PB was a nice feeling. Hope to keep up the trend and applying some of your tips to keep improving when I have the chance to go for the marathon distance. Hope you had a good birthday Ben. Cheers!

looks like im in the same boat. 2nd one coming up in 3 days, my main goal is 3:40 (first marathon was 3:48) but would be nice to get in 3:35ish. but i guess setting higher goals after not specifically training for them might lead to disappointment.

I did so many of these things before my first half yesterday and absolutely blew up at km 14. I finished but almost needed to go to hospital on the commute home.. a bit ratteled at where to go from here. The most annoying part is in the training leading up I had a full dress rehearsal (the full 21k) and had probably the best run of my life, I repeated everything on race day and no dice.

@@50Something well on the commute home, I was sick a bit and then suddenly got cold chills, really dizzy, started hyperventilating, my fingers and nose started going numb. Was pretty crazy. Ben, help needed. I’m over 40, love running but I’m very much a newbie when it comes to organized races. I recently completed a 30km in just under 2:10:00 without gels or salt tabs and minimal hydration at aid stations (because I didn’t have a race plan or good technique with the cups). I hit the wall at about 25 km and slowed down significantly. MY QUESTION: would I have been able to maintain my pace for a full 42.2 km had I used gels and hydrated properly? I’m having a lot of difficulty figuring out my optimal marathon pace. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for another fantastic video. Wishing you a very Happy Birthday.
@arkamukhopadhyay91112 жыл бұрын
that's an incredibly fast time, that means you're a naturally gifted runner. People half your age would struggle to run at that pace. So yes, gels and salt caps will certainly help.
@onorth56152 жыл бұрын
@@arkamukhopadhyay9111 Thanks for the kind words. That’s really encouraging. My pace felt good/optimal for the 30km distance, but I’m wondering if I would have to slow it down a touch for the marathon distance-even if I incorporate gels and salt tabs. I guess the first marathon will be somewhat of a trial run.

Great Video Ben! Do you upload all of your training to Strava? Was curious, because I was looking at your buildup before your 2:55, and there seems to be VERY little running. Sometimes 15mi a week. If this was try manage to progress your tempo pace and keep trained for the long distances with such little volume?
@ThisMessyHappy2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jordan, yes it all goes on Strava. I actually had a hip issue in the lead up to London thanks to a dodgy arm swing technique. So the bulk of my marathon training was done Dec-Feb and then March was “get to start line” mode. But it worked out well, just a bit longer taper 😊

Based on your half marathon PR, you should be able to shave another 10 minutes off your marathon time without much problem. 2:55 for a 1:16 guy is on the easy side. 2:40-2:45 is what you should aim for.
@ThisMessyHappy2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I’ve always thought I had a 2:40 in me but I prioritised Ironman last year so couldn’t have a go. And now I’m in Bangkok I’ve had to readjust and focus on trying sub 3 in 30 degree heat and stupid humidity at 1am 🤦🏻♂️😂
