I spent the last year tracking all of my public transit journeys, wanting to make something exactly like this, but I was just using a spreadsheet to get my numbers with no map. Thanks for showing all this, I'll definitely be doing this with all of the notes I took!

Great, I'm happy that it was useful. The uMap - Brouter is really a great complement if you track your journeys already in a spreadsheet, but I really suggest to give viaduct.world a try, it's also quite convenient and the UI on mobile devices is also streamlines to quickly track recurrent journey too.

Very technical, but interesting ! Incredible work that goes in your videos!

Great video, I was logging my UK routes as I’m trying to do all lines with passenger service.
@felixonrails28 күн бұрын
Good luck! Give viaduct.world definitely a try, it also calculates a percentage of all lines visited.

there's also travelboast that makes animated (railway) journeys on the map. No personal experience with it however.
@felixonrails25 күн бұрын
True, good point. You could use the gpx. made in Brouter to make an animation in travelboast.

I have a public transport map on umap. The map has layers Bus lines, tram lines, metro lines, trolleybus lines, ferrys and s bahn lines. And there are layers for routes of regional trains and long distance trains And I use travelynx and traewelling as well xD

Tavelynx, like Träwelling, is nice and convenient, but keep in mind is only good on mainland Europe, as you can't add any trip /station that isn't in the DB Navigator database. It's entirely dependent on MERITS / HAFAS / DB Data, while Viaduct uses it as guide, yet you can do any routes outside the HAFAS world as well.
@holymoley976628 күн бұрын
That was quick😉
@felixonrails28 күн бұрын
It was much quicker to do compared to any other previous video - by faaaaaaaar. 🤣

For anyone else, there's Träwelling which I recommend 😊
@felixonrails27 күн бұрын
Träwelling is nice and convenient, but keep in mind is only good on mainland Europe, as you can't add any trip /station that isn't in the DB Navigator database. In uMap / Brouter you're totally free, and Viaduct.world integrated many stations outside the DB IT world.

Small note: Trains to Austria tend to leave Zurich on a lower track number than that ;)

True, but on 27th august, the NJ 467 left from track 17 😉

@@felixonrails Yes saw that later in the video, but it went via Winterthur-St Margrethen that day (just because your drawing on the map was off in that case :D ) The video is neat though
@felixonrails28 күн бұрын
You are absolutely right. I remembered it while uploading as well and then I thought - to hell with it - no one will notice it anyway. But yes, you caught that very well!
@Elibuwu28 күн бұрын
@@felixonrails sorry for noticing /o\ in the end, it doesn't really matter for the video overall anyway. Good work and well-explained
@frejatotheworld28 күн бұрын
@@felixonrails yeah that's because it went via St. Gallen instead of Sargans, probably due to works between Sargans and Buchs. Viaduct showed it like that as well (and in your video about the trip you can see that you're passing north of Depot F right after leaving Zürich, meaning the train went via the Hardturmviadukt)

Another way to generate GPX files for your trips is to use a GPS logger (either a dedicated device or an app on your phone). It works without you needing to manually enter any waypoints, but you will need to have your phone (or dedicated GPS device) active throughout the journey. GPS also doesn't work well in dense urban areas (downtown) or on flights and loses signal in tunnels. I personally use a GPS logger app on my phone to track road trips in North America.
@felixonrails27 күн бұрын
You're right - I thought about mentioning this as an alternative. Except in old coaches, I usually don't have a good enough GPS reception for a good tracking. But if it works, it's definitely an alternative!

I had difficulty understanding two words you were saying until I realised what you meant. You said "normal gauge". Let me help you: Firstly, 1,435 mm is referred to as STANDARD gauge and not "normal" gauge. Secondly, "gauge" is pronounced GAYGE, where the second G is pronounced as J. I hope this helps.
@felixonrails27 күн бұрын
Thanks Barry. In German in and French, the gauge is normal, hence my lapsus. As for my English pronunciation, I'm sorry I'll work on it. All the best from Switzerland.
